The iPad Pro is NOT a pressure sensitive device. There is no pressure sensor under the screen...
I tried restoring the iPad as a new device, didn’t work too. So I had to go back to Apple Store Singapore and get another replacement iPad, forcing me to 11.4.1 from 11.3.1. Thankfully so far there are no issues but we will see.

Here’s some pointers from the staff that helped me with this case:
1. The iPad Pro is a pressure sensitive device. This is due to it having a pressure sensor under the screen. This means that you should avoid placing heavy weights on the iPad at all. One common mistake by some customers is to place the iPad on the backmost area of their backpacks (e.g. at the compartment that is also meant for paperwork) and then having the backpack placed such that this area is being pressed down by other content of the bags, which exert undue stress on the iPad and eventually making the screen too close to the pressure sensor, leading to these phantom touches. Having proper pads around the iPad like a sleeve will help mitigate this. Alternatively simply place the iPad in another compartment.

2. As for battery bloating, the possible symptom include getting a quishy feeling instead of hard feeling when touching the iPad and even screen delamination. The touchscreen should still be responsive as per usual barring other issues like the one mentioned about.

3. Screen discoloration can be caused by either issue. This means you can use this as a visual indicator of sorts on the health of the touchscreen.

4. The Apple diagnostics do not have swipe tests unlike for the iPhone :(

Hmm. Maybe what that exactly is may be wrong, but the theory that you should not exert too much force on the screen certainly still sound legit
Yes, absolutely. I agree on that. The iPad pro is aluminum and thin, therefore very easy to bend. My point is that, at least for the 12.9, there is no difference in form factor between the last model and the one from 2015. So why does the problem seems to be so prevalent only in the second generation? I think there is some kind of hardware fault here.

Try hitting it with a hammer to see if it senses that pressure
Uhm...I guess this was supposed to be a joke?

Only thing I can think of is the different digitaliser used between the two generations

It's also the first device with the 120 Hz ProMotion thingy, which probably changed a bit in the display architecture.

Same for the irresponsive screen issue BTW. It was more like "AGAIN? The same thing? Ok, let me get you a new one. I'm so sorry." While it is certainly annoying to go to the Apple Store such regularly (and for the same issue,) I'm happy that the exchange is a rather stress-free experience without too many questions asked.
Would be great if it was that easy in Russia. Official support told me that everything is ok and if I want I can consult authorized service provider. They have taken the iPad for diagnostics and after one week told me that everything works as it should, they couldn't find any problem. I got fed up with this and sold my old iPad and bought exactly the same model. For 1.5 months it worked flawlessly but after that issues began piling up and now it is as bad as the old one. Damn it.

So mine go so bad last night I finally wiped it clean and did a restore of my backup. Been perfect since doing that.

If you haven’t tried it I would recommend giving it a shot.

It is probably good couple of days or weeks until you start seeing the symptoms again and it is getting worse when it starts from tiny freezes and glitches from time to time.

Which is a pity since the iPad Pro 2 is pretty much the best and most-supported tablet in the market. Had there been better Android tablets and/or those offmarket tablets have better aftersales support, more people would have ditched the iPad Pro 2 already

That said, it is really strange why only a few users are having this issue. I wonder if it was a combination of bad manufacturing batches and the slightly lower amount of 12.9 inch users against the 10.5 inch users (which means lower sample size and also less manufacturing batches required)

does it occur when you keep the ipad pro on your hand or when it is laying on a table.

if im holding the ipad pro with my other hand, especially from the area where the charging port is or from the back, it becomes totally unresponsive.. i have tried differend ways to handle ipad pro, and it is more or less related to the way you hold it.

what i have found so far.

1. when charging and holding ipad pro, especially, from the bottom area, causes the screen becomes totally unresponsive.. puting it down onto a surface, and not holding it with your hand, the screen start behave ”normally” after a short period. still have touchscreen issues, but much less.

2. sometimes when it is charging, it becomes unresponsive and for example when writing, you will see skipping and missing letters/words. what is odd it is that the keyboard shows that the key is pressed, but nothing comes to the screen.. usually the keyboard doesnt recognize the touch either.

so.. ipad pro seems to be very prone the way it is kept especially if it is plugged to the charger at the same time. even when the ipad is about 45 degree angle laying on my stomach against my leg, it start showing symptoms. even now when im trying to write this message, it takes alot of time to fix all those mssn letrs (should be missing letters) and the ipad pro is on then sofa and charging.

because i know when i send this back to apple, they wont able to replicate the issue (has they ever?) i have recorded many examples for them to show it.

It happens in hand both landscape and portrait.
Happens when laying flat or propped in my lap.
Happens while attached to the ASK and sitting on my desk or table.
Happens plugged in for recharge and unplugged.
Happens on WiFi and LTE.
I have yet to find an app that is immune to this while using.

I have had the issue replicate in the Apple Store for the AG. He was scrolling through settings with it laying flat on the table top when it froze mid swipe. He turned the screen off then back on and it was fine. I got a refurb unit from that visit.

Any place but here or there....
That is my single biggest concern. :(
Mine as well.

If the software / apps I use were cross platform, I’d just go Surface Pro or maybe even Wacom when I get a new system. Unfortunately, too deep in Procreate to want to give that up. I guess I could learn the Affinity software I bought, but the learning curves scared me off.

Yesterday I swapped out my 3rd iPad Pro for this issue. I originally was going to swap it in late September but for the whole day of then it was not failing and I didn’t want to risk it not failing in front of the genius.
If not for AppleCare, I don’t think they would have done this so many times. I nearly used up my allotted 10 minutes of genius time before I could make it happen. The oddity for me has been that it is so difficult to make it fail on demand.

Editing photos in Lightroom on my iPad this morning and it was acting up like crazy. I lost my cool and out of frustration I punched the screen. Not enough to break it obviously. But I’ll be damned, it’s been flawless since! This was 8 hours ago. Definitely a hardware issue.

Thankfully you are not a certain bald person called Saitama...

Jokes aside, this sounds like the 21st century version of slapping the TV until it works. Did you have to hit a specific spot for this to work?

Just the side of my fist to the center of the screen. It’s the next day now and it still hasn’t skipped a beat. Even as I type this reply on it, the touch screen is working perfectly whereas before it would be skipping letters like crazy. Not sure what I did, but it immediately started working properly again after I smacked it... for now at least.

As someone who had to throw a camera across the room to get it to work again, this fix is a bit unsettling.

If issues crop up again will you wait until the new models come out and ask to swap for one of those?

Not sure what I’ll do. This is day 3 now and the screen has been fine.

Wow, this may mean something to do with the connection of the screen to other parts of the iPad

I think throwing a camera across the room is more drastic than this still :D

Well, it's now Tuesday and my iPad has been working flawlessly ever since I gave the screen a good smack on Saturday. Don't know what to think, but it appears that there must have been something loose or not seated properly that slapping it corrected.

OMG, that happens with me all the time and drives me crazy. I thought that that’s screen protector to blame - but looks like this issue is widespread.

I’m with 2nd gen 12.9

Still waiting for the eventual problem to return...
