If you see the map load sometimes, more noticeable if you have a poor signal, the map is made up of tiles that load to make the full map. I presume this is what he is referring to.
That's exactly what I am referring to. You also see them in early betas when Maps is not loading quickly.

You can see some references to tiles in the MapKit developer documentation below

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/mapkit/mktileoverlay

Man Apple Maps just totally screwed me over today. I was just getting to the point where I felt I could trust it and then it dumped me in a residential area half a mile away from my destination, blocked by a ravine and some woods. Had to use Waze to get to the meeting. Thankfully I gave myself a little leeway so I wasn't late.

Hoping the update will fix this kind of thing!

So...what was the cause? Address was in wrong location?? Business marked as wrong location?

Here's a screenshot from the Mac (showed the same way on the phone). Forgive my horrible drawing. The yellow line is the road (really it's a driveway to parking lot) that you have to take to get there. The red squiggle is the ravine/woods. As you can see in the screenshot there are no roads whatsoever showing on the map around the location, even though they do exist. I guess if Maps doesn't know about the roads, it can't get me there, but this was disappointing.

So, that’s a pretty standard issue that occurs every once and a while due to incorrect location of the business. I thinks it’s also where Apple is trying to improve on Waze/Google for example that just takes you to the street address...not even to the driveway entrance...and gives you walking directions from the street.

Better than what Apple gave you, but when corrected, I think Apple will be better.

I submitted the corrections and will see if they fix and how soon.

Yeah I submitted as well. In my experience though, when I submit reports, nothing ever gets acted on.

Basically I'm just hoping that this all improves when the rollout happens.

This is a POI...every one I’ve submitted since the beta was released 10 months ago has been corrected within 48 hours.

This will be a good test. They may fix the location marker, but the directions may take a little longer to update. That’s what happened with my NYC office.

I would give it until Monday is my guess.

I'm looking forward to the New York area update. Currently, 3D buildings cut off near eastern Queens. It's always been this way. If you zoom out to the furthest possible without losing sight of the buildings, you can follow this "line" where the buildings data suddenly cuts off. It stretches into upstate New York near the Tappan Zee Bridge, then moves west for a while.

Also, in the bottom photo, I found this bizarre error where Apple Maps shows what appears to be a reaaaaallllllyyy tall building in Yonkers. But there's nothing but small homes in that area.

Discovered a similar cutoff in Boston this afternoon: just west of the Boston-Newton line (about 6 miles west of downtown Boston). In what is surely a coincidence, Boston College is inside the “building zone”.

Phil Schiller is a BC alumn.

Kewl...just tried the same thing with Chicago. Still not convinced it is actually the new Maps as buildings have been there before, but never noticed the cutoff.

Honestly, I think it may have always been this way on some level.

City/metro areas got more building detail to showcase this feature even back when Maps first came out. It’s just going to expand to “everywhere” with new Maps.

Dallas is kind of odd, but expected. Detail North up to Love field and then NW to DFW...looping back down to Arlington and Fort Worth.

It’s like they put the detail where people are traveling most to make it look good.

Yes...major cities always had buildings within a certain radius. (On that note, buildings in New York City have definitely not been updated for a number of years. At least five or six.)

Just like how in navigation mode, certain major cities also preview the new maps data like ball fields, added greenery, and such.

How? And yes I did.

I can tell, because the arrow representing your car is pointing straight up, as though the camera is directly behind you. It's a glitch (maybe) that occurs only after switching to Overview mode and then switching back. Normally on local roads, the camera is slightly offset to one side, like the arrow would be pointing up and to the left a bit.
[doublepost=1557454544][/doublepost]See this picture here of me driving in the Bronx, having NOT used the Overview mode.

Very clever detective work!

Incidentally, after looking at the imagery of the buildings in Boston, the buildings are still the simply polygon shapes without any real detail. So, while the cutoff exists, its still the old geometry being used.

Did NYC area always go that far West into NJ?

Like Dallas and DC, they seemed to really make sure the inner loop of I-287 was covered...but that’s a huge area considering.

I never bothered to check how far the detail went out. Even though I’ve been through all of these areas over the past year, I was typically not driving slow enough outside of the cities for the detail to show.

I saw something odd while driving to work the other day, and realized that one of the buildings on this block was placed on the wrong side of the road. It should be in that vacant lot.

[doublepost=1557499058][/doublepost]You can also see that Apple didn't really capture some of the more unique shapes of these apartment buildings.

iOS 12.3 was released today. Downloading now.

I’ve been on 12.3 betas for awhile now. I think we’re seeing the same things.

I’m actually parked at JFK right now. I see what you mean about the buildings.

FYI, the northern extent of the more detailed areas here in the NYC metro is the Cross County Parkway, more or less (Mt Vernon).

Still not seeing any updates...and now wondering if they are just waiting until WWDC to announce "anything?"

And correction from above that I submitted last week still hasn't been done. Submitting again with a screenshot of the directions error to see if they will at least move the POI. Surprised this hasn't been updated yet.

I don't see anything different. Yet.

Maybe I'm nuts, but staring intensely at Apple Maps on my phone, I think maybe the resolution was bumped up ever so slightly.

I'll be in Vegas in less than a week. As long as my rental has Apple CarPlay, I'll get to experience the updated maps in person, and in practice. Glancing around Vegas from home yesterday, I noticed Apple Maps updated a highway interchange there that recently changed.

It stands to reason that with Apple’s biggest software introduction (and only software development event) of the year, they’re not going to “waste” a big Apple Maps update for a point release.

If it’s going to happen, it will happen on June 3rd.
