I'm baaaaaaack. Spent a week in Vegas with the new Apple Maps. They did not disappoint.
I rented a 2019 BMW X5. Fortunately, as it was fairly new, it still had CarPlay active. But it took me forever to figure out how to get it to work. It mainly works wirelessly, but the connection would sometimes fail upon starting the car, and it was overall a bit of a pain to work with. That's a BMW issue, though. In my Genesis, it only works via USB connection, so it's just connect and go.
One thing I did like, however, was the super wide screen on the BMW, which permitted for widescreen CarPlay, which looked great.
Interestingly, since this was wireless CarPlay, there was an additional symbol on the left bar showing your battery life, which I don't have in my car. Also, CarPlay is much more integrated with the BMW infotainment system, which is both nice, and annoying. From the navigation or phone menus on the BMW, you can choose to perform those actions via CarPlay, which then opens CarPlay and takes you automatically to that Apple function (defaulting navi to Apple Maps, of course.) Vice-versa, if searching for a navigable route in Apple Maps, there's a selection to send the destination info to the BMW in-dash navi instead. Annoyingly, this also means that pressing the microphone button on the steering wheel while within CarPlay does NOT bring up Siri. It brings up the BMW assistant. If I want to quickly send a text message to someone, I would have to select and hold the home button on CarPlay.
