I had the maps for Texas on my phone and not my iPad on the newest beta. Then yesterday, it went away on my phone. They are doing a weird roll out with the new maps.

That happened when the SoCal/AZ/NM/Las Vegas release was done. I think that just means everyone will see it within the next few days!

I am guessing this article was posted earlier in this thread. I thought it was all positive about Apple Map direction until I got toward then end with the stuff about Yelp and also AR. What do some of you map guru's think:

https://www.justinobeirne.com/new-apple-maps

Yeah...it’s a year old after Apple issues it’s first expansion during the iOS12 beta period. Still some valid points, but a lot has changed in the past year.

I see Apple Maps update the ETA all the time throughout the route. I watch it as I'm driving, because I'm always running late to work. lol

I do notice that Apple Maps tends to overestimate, or pad, the ETA. As I'm driving, and not hitting any traffic, the ETA will slowly, slowly lower. Alternatively, if I'm sitting at a very long traffic light, or hit a bit of traffic, I'll see the ETA slowly get worse. I more or less see Google Maps and Waze behaving the same way.
Not sure if it actually pads, or adjusts to my fast driving.

Decent and ra-ra.
AM needs to add multi point routes. A > B > C > .... Putting aside the accuracy issues I am seeing, the ability to craft my routes is a big lack in AM. Also AM at times fails to offer alternative routes.

Below is a route from my house to the LAX area.
AM offers me one option.
GM offers me lots of options.
GM allso allows me to custom route along the coast.

AM is getting better. Still has a ways to go and at times shows some ??? behavior.

[doublepost=1564657269][/doublepost]Every time I come closer to liking and using AM I run into something that keeps me in the GM camp.
Just curious when you say it only offers one, do you go into route overview and see multiple options there? This may be a bias towards simplicity on Apple’s part, while offering more routes in overview for “power” users.
[doublepost=1564868586][/doublepost]
I wonder how many people choose the alternate "slower" route and for what reasons? I'm sure "not being on a highway" or "driving by a coffee shop I prefer" and stuff like that might come up, but I've never seen any data as to how often it happens.

I typically get a few routes to choose from, even on what I consider to be the short drives I normally do. I always choose the fastest.

Routing and traffic are back to being spot on for me over the past week which is great considering all of the lane closures we have around here on our major highways.
I’ll drive an extra 5-10 minutes to save $4 on tolls.

Look at my past posts - I included screen shots on a lot of them.
I’ll select my start and destination and often AM only offers a single option. If I search then select it offers >1 routes. But I’m not searching. I already know my beginning and end. Stranger is that most times I do get multiple options. Just not always.

Then again it could be just my area ...

When tolls are there, it always seems to give me a “no toll” option....or I just select “avoids tolls” when I know I want that.

Went for a 90 minute drive yesterday from RI to CT. AM was accurate for the most part, but I noticed the traffic was about 5 minutes behind real-time. Like the map would show orange, and I'd be driving in the orange, and there would be no slow-down, and then suddenly five minutes later there would be a slow-down, but AM would show blue for that part. The slow-down would roughly match what the orange was, so it's like the data just hasn't updated yet. I'm guessing this is because it's still relying on TomTom and other sources for data? Hoping this improves with new rollout.

Traffic is done via Apple as well as other traffic sources when available. TomTom was only roads/routing.

Ok whatever. Either way it’s slow.

It’s been spotty over the past couple of weeks depending where you are.

I drove an hour each way today North of where I live and hit on and off heavy traffic heading home (people coming back from their cottages/camping).

Maps was perfect and let me see when the slowdowns were coming. Kind of a big deal when the speed limit is 75 and your driving 85...and every other car is a pick up truck with a camper or RV.

Did a drive to Camarillo today and AM gave me two options on the route:
One was a straight shot down the 101 while the other took me in a wrong direction just to join the 101 at almost the same spot. Both get me there.

Anyway, the time was close even if the traffic was off. Then again, GM was also off on traffic.
Go figure ;)

Did an hour drive this morning and had three options to choose from...also on the way home. I wonder if it is more limited in the "new" areas because it is Apple routing options versus TomTom where I am? (or is it???)

That could be the reason. I always get 3 options here in China. Just for a laugh (I’m currently a long way from home) I put it to give me a route home just now and still got 3 options despite it being a case of 19h 4m or 19h 8m or 19h 11m...

All 3 routes met at the same point and took the same route for the last half of the journey. Starting a route from roughly that point I got 3 options again.

I dunno...I've made 19 hour drives before and I'd ABSOLUTELY want to shave even a few minutes off of that drive. LOL

Here's the thing though, assuming the fastest option is typically the one that has the most "highway" time. And assuming the apps compute the times based on speed limits. If the average speed limit is 70 mph and you average just above that, you will going less than 10% over the speed limit or thereby arrive not much faster than computed.

But with a side road option (here in the US that can be a 2 lane road with a 55 mph speed limit) I can easily drive 70+ mph safely and get somewhere quicker than the "faster" route. Have seen this many time on long drives. I just pick either the fastest one or maybe if one looks like a nicer drive (by water or avoiding a city or avoiding tolls) I'll take that one.

I try not to think too hard about the minute or two when I really use Apple Maps because of the UI and integration with CarPlay and other apps.

Oh hey, I'm right there with you. I live in the middle of nowhere in the Ozarks, and I absolutely have been known to driver....er, 'the legal safe speed limit' (teehee) on back roads and somehow arrive @ my destination faster. My comment was more driven by how sleepy my butt is after a 19 hour drive.

In general on LONG drives, I'm known more to stick to main roads; but if we're talking a drive of a few hours or less, or it's a route I know VERY well, I'll take any road that can help me save time, even (and sometimes especially) if it's a back road. :)

I have the developer beta 5 installed on a iPhone X. When looking arround Apple Park I get the binoculars but the window is just black instead of a street view. How is your experience with street view?

Apple Park was the first pace I went to when the beta dropped. The streets around it all work fine for me.

I have found the data just not as up to date as google. There is a bridge closed until October for construction and Apple takes you across like nothing is wrong, it but Google gives a nice red/white striped line with a popup to click that says when it's closed by.

And on the other side there is a road closure but Maps has the wrong road as being closed (side road not the main road) and routes you through it. Google says yellow triangles on both ends saying possible road closure for another week. Which there is sewer work there and construction signs say no through traffic.

And there isn't even a way to report the error, I would if I could; Apple only lets you report POI issues. Maps is still very frustrating at times

Not true...simply drop a marker, locate it to the exact spot if necessary....report issue.
