I have the updated maps info for Texas, Louisiana, and Southern Mississippi now.
Here’s a screenshot of a golf course in New Orleans. They even have the sand traps laid in there.
Impressive... most impressive!
It does, almost precisely. That's probably a pretty easy one, given the contrast between the sand color and the grass color. Its even picking up on the difference between the fairway and the rough as well. That's pretty slick!Does it match the satellite shot?
I don’t know if this has been mentioned or not, but I had this location show up in maps while scrolling around. I have a meeting there this morning, but have not saved it as a favorite on my map.

That’s really cool...haven’t seen that yet personally.
I’ve had that come up several times too. Nice feature. @Chacocliff, do you really want to have that meeting broadcast to the world?
If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that there will be some Map related feature on the new iPhones that will accompany more widespread US-based Maps updates. Maybe it will be A/R related. But I think we will see a larger announcement related to the more detailed base-layer maps during the iPhone release next month. I do not see Apple just sliding big updates to major cities like NYC in without a major announcement. The iPhone event will be the largest announcement for the rest of the year and it makes sense that they’ll say something then and release it with iOS 13.
How it happens, I don't know. I just think its a big enough deal for them and the Apple ecosystem that they will not release the rest of the US in dribs and drabs like this. It is much too good of a PR play just to rely on people like us posting when we "discover" a newly covered area. This is Apple's one chance to make some reputational headway against Google and to recover from the disastrous launch of Maps.Don't they already have that capability with current phones though? I saw a story on here where someone added an AR option to an event to use with Maps. I guess when Look Around is expanded to more locations, it might come naturally.
I think the biggest add they could do is offer a web based version for everyone to have access to for routing, making corrections/changes, etc. There are just so many Apple fans out there that could help take Maps to a new level if they had a web based version to use for updates or routing that could be forwarded to their phone.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Mapping tech is probably one of the 3 or 4 major tentpole features of any smartphone. There is no way Apple is going to re-do the fundamental underpinnings of the basemap of, say, NYC and not have a major press release or, more likely, a proud moment at a big event (WWDC or iPhone unveiling). This is a VERY big deal and there's no way Phil Schiller will miss the opportunity to crow about it!I see what you're saying now...but still do not agree. I think their best play is to stay the course with what they are doing now (dribble out slowly, the under the hood improvements we have been experiencing everywhere even in non-updated areas, mapping effort that has picked up dramatically in Europe, expansion of Look Around, etc.).
At some point in the future after most of that has been completed or seriously underway (next 12-18 months), they will do an independent study of Maps versus the others to prove out some of the enhancements that we have been experiencing in the US. Maybe better ETA's, lane guidance, graphical features, etc. that really one-up Google. At a minumum, they will have a follow-up article like last year's pointing out all of the changes so at least it is distributed through the main press.
No matter when that happens though, you will always get the very loud "Apple Maps sent me off a cliff" people or the "it's not updated in my area...I'll guess I'll see that in the year 2039 at the rate they are moving" people...the "how can they NOT have bicycle directions?" people. Those are always my favorite comments to read.
Google did this for the latter. It didn't work out so well.I think the biggest add they could do is offer a web based version for everyone to have access to for routing, making corrections/changes, etc.

Can you please post a picture? As of about an hour ago, I’m now seeing the north east updated. Everything from Maryland and DC up through Maine. So far, I’m only seeing it on my phone, not my iPad (both on the most recent iOS 13 public beta), so it looks like they may be slowly rolling it out.
