I updated to iOS 13.0, saw no mention of the new 'Look Around' feature on the Maps splash screen the first time I opened the app after updating, and found that the only 'blue' roads in the entire country (meaning they have 'Look Around' availability) are in the SF area. What's up with that?!

Look Around is currently only available in SF area, Hawaii and Las Vegas. Like Flyover, it will launch in other "new map" areas over time.

Ahhh, good to know. Thank you. For some reason, I thought the coverage was going to be much more broad across major cities in the U.S. when iOS 13 launched.

Nope...just an added Maps feature issued with iOS13. We keep the front page of this thread updated, so check back there for the latest or simply subscribe to the thread. We have our busy times, but it isn't crazy.

Look Around is limited to San Francisco area, Hawaii and Las Vegas right now. All your questions about what is new and available is right on the first page of the thread.

My problem is that my updated maps are now gone. They were there when i was using iOS 12, but they disappeared since updating and have reverted to the old style maps.

Spent the afternoon driving around in iOS 13's CarPlay.

I'm not too happy so far.

First, here are the last two photos I took of CarPlay on iOS 12.4.1.

IMG_0229.PNG

IMG_0231.PNG

So the first thing I noticed when booting up CarPlay under iOS 13 was...how busy it is. When I open Maps, as before, Maps likes to instantly give me directions to a location it *thinks* I'll want to go to. But if I'm not going there, I have to cancel the route. On iOS 12, it was as simple as selecting a big cancel button. But now it's a tiny X button.

After loading my route, Maps gives me up to three options, as always. But I much preferred the old method of selecting between the three routes. That was by selecting the big button "More Routes", and then highlighting the three route options, which were listed one under the other. Selecting a route would change the route overview on the side of the screen.

The "More Routes" button is now gone. Now you have to move the selection cursor all the way around to the right side of the map, and select the "minutes", located randomly on each route on the overview. I don't use the touch screen in my car, preferring to use the control dial to avoid smudges and fingerprints on my touch screen. This new method makes it that much harder to select between the different routes.

Another thing I don't like, is that Maps is always defaulting to the 2D view when I start the app, or when I finish a route. On iOS 12, I left it in 3D, and it would always default back to 3D. Now it's always in 2D, and I have to scroll over to the right side to change it back to 3D. That's getting annoying.

As for *good* changes...well, everything looks better. Even though I still don't have the Northeast update, the graphics overall look a bit better, with slightly more color, and the 3D buildings look a bit more defined as well. The camera also moves around a bit more smoothly than it did previously under iOS 12. Even in 3D view, POI names are appearing much more stable, and are smaller in text, so they look sharper.

But I seem to be finding more that I *dislike* about Maps in CarPlay under iOS 13 than things I *do* like.

Another setback is the zoom level at which the 3D buildings will appear while navigating in CarPlay. It's back to the early iOS 12 levels. Under iOS 12.4.1, while on a highway, buildings would appear within 0.9 miles of the next exit you need to take. On a local road, after the camera switches to a top-down view in approach to a turn, buildings would appear within 0.3 miles of your next turn. But on iOS 13, on a highway, buildings don't appear until around 0.5 miles of your exit, and on local roads, the buildings don't appear until around 600 feet from your turn.

This sucks, because I *loved* seeing the buildings while zoomed out. See my first picture at the top of the post. That looks incredible. Like driving through a miniature panorama of the city! Now we've lost it again.

Also, depending on the zoom level, the roads look very unrefined and jaggedy. Like, the road at points will look like it's separating from itself.

On iOS 11 and 12, while navigating in CarPlay, the camera view behind your arrow was a bit of an over-the-shoulder, 3/4 view. I've mentioned this before. If you switched to the route overview and then go back again, the camera would then be positioned directly behind the arrow, looking straight ahead. I didn't like that view, because it sometimes made the nearby roads look a bit weird. On iOS 13, the camera seems to default now to being directly behind the arrow. This perspective also causes road bubbles to often get cut off by the right side of the screen.

Speaking of the screen, the "next turn" box is much larger than before, as is the ETA bar on the bottom. There feels like there's less real estate for the map to shine. Which is also a shame. I kind of wish the shortcut/time bar on the left side was a bit thinner, also.

And while I haven't driven at night yet, I did drive through some long, dark tunnels enough to cause my screen to switch to night mode...and I'm not that happy with that, either! Gone are the smooth, cool blues of the former night mode. Now it's blacks and browns. Not as nice to my eyes. :(

My overall experience today was quite rough. It felt like my connection to Maps wasn't very strong...lots of abrupt pop ups, road labels not showing up, jaggy roads...maybe they're just having server issues with all the people downloading iOS 13 today, as well as the continued progression towards releasing the Northeast update for everyone. Perhaps the upcoming release of iOS 13.1 will fix some of these issues.

Overall, I'm disappointed. As even the Northeast update wouldn't fix a lot of these issues with the program itself.

Here are some screenshots I took this afternoon:

I opened Maps on my phone, and it decided I should be looking at the nearby river, instead of starting off where I was actually standing.

IMG_0248.PNG

Note the photo below. No buildings showing, even as I'm approaching a turn. On iOS 12.4.1, buildings would always be showing in this top down view. Now they don't appear until around 600 feet from the turn.

If you look just above and to the left of the left-most I-295 shield, you'll see what I mean about roads being torn apart.

And again here, if you look further up the highway, it's very jagged and torn up before the curve.

All I can say is that I haven't experienced any of those issues....except maybe the location of the arrow. But I think that was done to provide a consistent frame location when moving to the dashboard view...notice that they are identical. And this will be needed if other apps are going to work within the dashboard view as well.

Maps always offers up where it thinks I want to go....and it's scary how right it is most of the time.

I'm still getting three route options usually to choose from when I'm going far enough and there is actually a choice.

Maybe it will be better next week on 13.1?

EDIT: also, just checked Google and Waze and neither of their updates today have added dashboard view.

Weirdness. So one of the new features iOS 13's CarPlay is known for is allowing you to be using CarPlay, but let someone else use your phone without affecting what's on the CarPlay screen. I've noticed that, after disconnecting the phone from my car afterwards, that there are no open apps on my phone. I used to have to force close any apps used during CarPlay to truly close them. But on iOS 13, they're gone once you disconnect. Nothing is open in the background.

After dinner tonight, I decided to experiment with Google Maps and Waze, since they were both updated today. I set my destination on Google Maps to my office. It loaded the route, and proceeded to warn me of a crash along my route causing a 25-minute delay, as Google likes to do. I cancelled the route, and then set a route home. Google warned me again about the same crash, except my route home would take me nowhere near that crash. The crash was on the other side of the city. >.>

I navigated to a nearby Carvel, and then switched to Waze. No problems with Waze, but nothing new, either. After reaching my next random destination, I closed all apps, and unplugged my phone from the car. I checked to make sure all apps were fully closed, and they were. Nothing was running on my phone. I plugged my phone back in and opened Apple Maps in CarPlay.

I set my destination to home. While driving on the highway, I suddenly heard the Waze voice warn me of police up ahead. It came over the car's speakers, and scared the hell out of me. After the Waze voice played out of nowhere, it activated my car's sound system, and started playing music from my jukebox (which I promptly turned off). I have no idea how Waze was running, since I had unplugged the phone and made sure that all the apps were closed out.

I decided I needed some more experimentation, so I drove to the downtown district. At one point, the Waze voice AGAIN came over, and warned me of a red light camera ahead. Except this time, it didn't come over the car's speakers. It came through my phone's own speakers instead, so it was less audible.

As it was in iOS 12, Apple is still not permitting Google and Waze to customize their interfaces any further. This results in Google's more wordy route explanations and delay notifications to simply get cut off.

IMG_0268.PNG
IMG_0270.PNG

Also, I can't have my garage entrance be listed separately with its own custom label set as my home address, it seems. Yet, it's still there, just showing as "Home". Even stranger is this: I have my true home address saved as a "Favorite", in case I need to drop someone off in front of the building, rather than going to the garage. I went into my POI settings to correct the precise location of the pin, and noticed that iOS 13 lets you better customize building entrances as well as driveways.

I'm not sure how, but Apple already knew where the two entrances to my building were located, as well as the fact that the driveway around the corner was actually for my building. But then I tried to correct the entrance and driveway for a diner I frequent, and it wouldn't let me.

Here are some more night shots. I'm really not crazy about the night look.

OH! Forgot about yet another iOS 13 setback. I had mentioned a few pages back that iOS 12.4.1 had improved to the point where highways that were interlined with other highways would have all of their route shields grouped together better. But this has been weakened on iOS 13.

In the below example outside Las Vegas (on new maps, no less), the featured highway is a combo of I-11, US 93, and US 95. But zoomed out, Maps only shows us US 93. Zoom in more, and it's still just US 93. But zoom in further, and FINALLY I-11 and US 95 appear alongside it.

I'm going to assume that one of the reasons Apple decided to rush out the finished iOS 13.1 next Tuesday is because they know they didn't complete their testing and debugging for regular iOS 13, nor squash all the bugs (aside from adding in promised features). Let's see what happens after Tuesday.

Oh, and another annoying bug. Every time I open Apple Maps, the option to show traffic is turned off. Every. Single. Time. I have to keep turning it back on.

Seeing these comparisons to Google Maps reminds me of why I prefer Apple Maps. When I first got CarPlay I did a few week comparison of AM to GM since GM displays less stuff than the phone app. GM is just way too cluttered with too much information. I just need to see my route and where I'm going.

Even in the first days of Apple Maps, I chose it over Google Maps for this reason. Of course, I live in the US and it performed well enough for me to get by.

Agree. I've been solely an Apple Map user for years in many states around the US. But when I got CarPlay early this year I decided to compare to GM again, mainly to see if there was anything more it offered other than Satellite view.

iPhone 11 Pro Max activated.

Still don't have the Northeast update. LOL

On the plus side, Maps is now remembering (on my phone at least) to keep it in 3D mode, and it's keeping traffic turned on. So that's an improvement.
