I think that depends on location. For my neighborhood, GM is 6-12 months old while AM is 12-24 months.
I am dating this by road construction / improvements that have occurred over the last year.
You are probably correct. I'm using roads and building construction when looking for updates. I'm sure GM will catch up soon.

Actually I just checked a construction area and AM is more like 18 mo. old. Still beat 4 years!

Do you guys think the Midwest and West updates will roll out at the same time, or will there be some time in between? Also, when do you think that will be?

My guess is that we will see both of them the week before Thanksgiving with others having access to the SE.

Would be huge if they could get people to use them the busiest travel week of the year.

Agh, I want the midwest update so bad. I'm so bummed I had it on my phone and then had to lose it when I had to factory reset. It'd be really useful to have on my Mac and iPad too.

I’m thinking this week.
That's what I'm thinking as well. Justin O'Bierne had his section on the average length of time between testing release and official release, based on population of the region/size of the region. He figures the Midwest will go wide by November 8th. Seems reasonable

Got to use it on my can ride into NYC this morning. Damn...the traffic light turn notifications are amazing.

I recorded part of the ride and will post in a bit.

Here are some images and one video from my cab ride in. I didn’t catch it since traffic was so heavy before we turned onto 42nd, but when Siri said, “After this light, turn left at the next light on 42nd Avenue,” I almost lost it. So cool.

Traffic was dead on as well as the eta.

As you can see, it only shows the next three traffic signals/stop signs as to not overload the map. Even with the sketchy signal/GPS one can experience in the city, it was right on with the timing for the turns.

Question: Does anyone know where the actual directions come from?

Here is the issue ... we had a few wildfires last week. A local highway near me (118) was closed due to the Maria fire. 118 showed closed on the map yet the directions took me to the 118.

It shouldn't have...if it was marked as "closed" or blocked off, it should not have routed you there. Pretty sure the directions come from Apple in new areas 100%.

First time I have seen this happen with an emergency closure. Will have to keep a close eye on this.
Other than a missed one-way mistake, I haven't seen something like this from AM in a good while.

Thx!

Two of my biggest issues with the new maps in New York City are present in your second and third images.

-Highway names being used based on adjacent service roads.

-Complex interchanges being overly simplified to the point of not being accurate.

I was browsing around on the Maps app on the Mac and noticed it doesn't have Look Around. Seems a bit like a missed opportunity...

But the Mac also doesn't have the indoor mall and airport maps either. Wonder why...

That makes zero sense...wtf?
I could totally understand why it wouldn't have the indoor maps or malls, because someone who doesn't know their way around...isn't going to be carrying their Mac around. They're going to be using their phone. 😂 I'm kind of looking at this from a consistency standpoint. Between those two features...Look Around seems like an odd one to leave out.

I kind of disagree...I think the Mac Map should have identical access as the mobile version, even indoor Maps.

Some on Reddit have been saying that Maps is routing them via additional walking directions to the inside of malls (in the case of routing to an Apple store) like Google does. Makes sense and definitely something I would want to see on my Mac if I was planning out a route.

Why limit it?

StreetView was and should be available as well. Where were you looking?

Good points. I also haven’t been able to see “collections” on the Mac either and I AM on Catalina...

And when it comes to Look Around on the Mac...I never saw it. At least nothing in an obvious sense that says “hey, this is a feature here”. Only getting the binoculars on iOS and iPadOS, nothing on Mac

Frequently if I am planning a trip into an area I am not familiar with I will initially look it up on my laptop.

Is that true for everyone? I don't have a Mac with my current job, s not able to check. If so, I wonder if it's a navigation thing (screen navigation) and they are not set up to handle without a touch screen??

Just out of curiosity, how do you guys even use Apple Maps? I don't know how good is it in the US but here in Dubai it has so many missing venues like shops, cafes, etc. I tried it for 5 mins and immediately uninstalled it and installed Google Maps instead. Is it much better in the US or what?

Looking at this page, it shows no support for the UAE for Turn-By-Turn Directions: https://www.apple.com/ae/ios/feature-availability/#maps-turn-by-turn-navigation

It's wonderful here in the U.S., and getting better every month. I live in New York City, which is in the "new maps" region, and it's better than Google Maps in a number of ways. (Definitely not perfect, though.)

I know how you feel, but Apple has concentrated almost exclusively on improving Apple Maps in its native country, first. But the U.S. will be finished by the end of the year, and we know Apple Maps vehicles have been rolling around other countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia. I'm sure they'll arrive in the U.A.E. before you know it, and you'll get the same massive improvements that we're currently enjoying.

For the West and Midwest updates?

I'm predicting at least one, but yeah, I'm thinking both.

If it doesn't come this week, I'll jump to next week. I think it's coming soon.

I'm one of the areas of the U.S. not updated (yet), and it's very good, but I've done a lot of reporting corrections over the years. It's probably not as good in Dubai when it comes to venues due to lack of reporting by locals, etc.

It s improving yet not up to Google Map standards. For a lot of instances it is very good.
You are correct though, outside of some areas in the US, Apple Maps needs a lot of work.
