I think the plan for hitting major cities first and then expanding out makes sense (and yes, should be much quicker with residential areas).

Im of the opinion that it’ll be rapid. Apple spent last year mapping major cities with cars equipped with 360° cameras. They did Toronto back in May of 2019.

When they talked about the new maps, they said processing happens quickly after the hard drives are transferred from the car to Apple Maps’ team. They have all the data and photographs already.

So, my guess is that they’re just testing Look Around with the few cities they released and once they’re happy with how it works, they’ll turn on the the cities they have the data for.

Not sure where you are getting your info, but every Apple Maps vehicle mapping for the past 5 years has been taking Look Around images. They don’t have separate Look Around cars.

Google does, but they’ve already mapped the area on their own and are collecting updated images.

As has been seen by many posts of Apple Maps vehicles in already released areas, they are already doing second or even third passes in areas that have updated road networks or require it for updated Street View info, but every vehicle out there collects ALL the data required to map the road, take the Look Around images as well as the 3D building data with LIDAR.

Out of all the companies I know, Apple has to be the one that is the most protective of its brand. Releasing Look Around imagery without sufficient checks by humans and you are pretty much guaranteed to sooner or later have a cases where the algorithms miss blurring a face or something worse in line with the mistakes that have been seen in Google Maps' Street View. That would be a big PR fiasco for Apple that risks beeing blown way out of proportion because of the company we're talking about. It would also make people question Apple's strong stance on privacy that they have been pushing so hard lately

I just deleted/re-added Apple Maps on my iPad hoping the new maps would come back (they were previously showing when I traveled to Colorado). No dice.
So... still showing on MacBook Pro (macOS 10.15.2), not showing on iPad/iPhone/wife iPhone (all iOS 13.3) nor on other Mac (macOS 10.14.6).

Still have them on my iPad, only.

I've been looking forward to Look Around in the Chicago area (hopefully that's coming soon). But I'm really hoping the stop signs/lights feature comes to the area soon. I'm pretty interested in that one!

On new beta and still have old maps on all devices (iPad, Macs, iPhone)

For those who have Apple Watch - do you have any regions updated? My Apple Watch doesn't even have California on the new maps...

I wonder if this issue is a bug, and if we should be reporting it as one. Why wouldn't the newest version of the map load on all devices? I doubt it's a caching issue, as if I reboot my phone and turn on airplane mode, then try to load Maps, it fails to load the map. When I turn off airplane mode, the old-style map loads.

Actually, I believe the watch DOES have the new Maps (I confirmed locally as well as took a look at Los Angeles).

The watch app simply does not have the graphic layer that includes the 3D buildings...it stops at the base map level and includes the updated roads, green spaces...they’ve just left off the other details (pools, baseball fields, etc. ).

If you do zoom in ALL the way, the building shapes do show up which makes sense for walking directions as watch face is too small to show more than a couple of buildings.

Im just basing it off the greenery - are you saying new maps are there for walking directions but not graphically present when viewing?

I’m saying the areas with the new Map data are indeed in the watch...roads, info....they’ve simply left off some of the graphic layers. I mean, it’s a watch, the apps are typically not the full version anyway.

Yep, vegetation and buildings are turned off, but the new map is definitely on the Watch. Probably the biggest telltale sign is updated shield icons that have cropped up around the country — for example, stretches of Historic Route 66.

Unfortunately, I got a taste of the new maps when I went to MA to visit my folks over the Christmas break. Now I am back in NC and I ain’t got nothn’! Hoping that the SE sees the update before February!
