Thanks, I'll be getting it as well. But how can i upgrade the EVO 960 once i get it? Will i need another pc or I may be able to do it through MacOS?
You should use carbon copy cloner to clone your existing drive to an external drive that's been formatted APFS using disk utility. Also make a high sierra bootable installer USB. Then when the 960 Evo comes install it and boot to the high sierra USB and open disk utility, change the disk tree view to show all devices, then format the 960 evo as APFS, unmount it, and restore it's container disk with the external backup you made. That's the easiest way for me, you can also try installing osx from scratch.

Sorry, what I meant was how to upgrade the EVO 960's firmware. How could it be possible?

Hi. I have Macbook Air 13” mid 2013, have also upgraded to Samsung 960 evo nvme ssd. All went well, have used it from last year december. Only issues were restart, sleep and battery drain. Using windows in bootcamp all is fine. But after last OS X High Sierra update I’m getting alot kernel panics and restarts. Seems like Member oscarxvita has. I’m using cheap chinese adapter. Using windows everything is fine and also using OS X in safe mode. I have read I can’ just roll back update, seems I have to reinstall system.

Noone else having this problem?
Hi again.

So I have repaired my MBA 13” that was having kernel panics and constantly rebooting.

I started my MBA in safe boot, made time machine backup and after that restored to the same backup. Again all is as has been from beginning.

I just install Windows 10 real quick before installing macOS and the wifi driver from the broadcom folder in the apple boot camp support software. Then install Samsung magician and update firmware. You could also boot to a Linux bootable 960 EVO firmware update here. Then make it bootable on a USB using UNetBootin. But it's easier to just install Windows. You don't need a product key.

I've been hearing good things about the long one in this thread. I haven't tested it yet but many others have. I'll be testing it as soon as mine arrive.

How long ago did you order yours? I'm really curious if the long black adapter fixes the reboot issue on some models. Looking forward to your results!

Thanks,
Peter

It's been about a week. I'll update this thread when I test it. I'm curious to find out if it resolves the reboot issue as well.

Hi everyone,

Just for info I received today the last Sintech adapters, and the new ones have exactly the same wiring diagrams as the large green ones... great news !
And they do work perfectly... Here are some photos...

Hi Gilles, does that mean the reboot issue is resolved with this new long black adapter? Thanks for any clarification!!

Peter

Unless you really want a drive larger than 1TB I don't see the point in frigging around with an adaptor & an unsupported M.2 NVMe drive that may cause kernel panics when new Apple SSUBX drives can be easily found on eBay for similar prices.

[doublepost=1520606076][/doublepost]I can find a toshiba XG3 1Tb for less than $300. A 1Tb Apple SSUBX is almost $800 ....
If you think they have similar prices ....

[UPDATE 3-9-18]
Howdy y'all, I have been using these for my customers with 2015 and later MBA/MBP flawlessly so I figured I'd post my testing results. Unfortunately it seems 2013 MBA has a restart problem. I will be testing all of these machines again when my Sintech long black adapters arrive from China. I'm hesitant to think anything will improve over the cheap CableCC ones I've been using successfully (on 2015 and later no problems).

  • 2015 MacBookAir: Sleep and Restart works with High Sierra
If you hold down option, you see a normal boot drive (grey)
  • 2013 MacBookAir: Sleep works. Restart results in folder with ?
If you hold down option, you see a external boot drive (orange)
  • 2014 MacBookAir: [UPDATE 3-9-18] Sleep works. Restart results in folder with ?
If you hold down option, you see a external boot drive (orange)
  • 2013 MacBookPro: Will test soon, my 2013 is getting logic board repair
Will be re-testing all models above with Sintech long black adapter soon!

Hi.

I’ve tested using a Samsung PM961 1TB and it is detected and works consistent with the Samsung 960 EVO.

I’ve also tested a Toshiba XG3 1TB but can’t get it to boot, I’m getting a panic report in IONVMeFamily Controller.

Both with the same sintech adapter. Might be just the drive as I only had one.

How does reboot and sleep work with the Samsung drives

Hi all,

I've swapped out my Toshiba XG4 for a Samsung 960 Pro.
Installation was ok, Disk Utility 'see' the 960 Pro and I was able to format it without any problem.
Installed Windows 10, download and install Samsung Magician, updated the 960 Pro firmware version to the current 4B6QCXP7. Blackmagic Test: Write at 2000 and Read at 2500. So much better than the Toshiba XG4.

I tried to upgrade my MacBook pro retina mid-2014 13" with Sintech long black adapter (type-C) and Samsung 960evo 500GB this weekend. I got the result as I expected. No reboot problem, but it has sleep problem. After closing the lid for a couple of minutes, I always had to face with kernel panic. Finally I entered 'sudo pmset -a standby 0 hibernatemode 0' in the terminal and no kernel panic again after sleeping. Also, I estimated how many values my battery was drained and it decreased 3 to 5% for 6 hours during closing the lid. Anyway, thanks for your knowledge sharing on this threads.

By the way, is there anyone who has no sleep problem without disabling standby & hibernation, having 2013-2014 macs?

I have a MBP 13 inch late 2014. Normally I turn my computer off, because the time to turn it on is so short. But I have tried letting it sleep over night and during lunch etc. And it sleeps without issues, just wakes up and the logonscreen is there and I can continue working. The only problem I have had so far is at startup, when there has been 2-3 times when the startup chime has come two times. But always starting. No kernel panic. Green adapter and Samsung 960 Evo. I have the following settings in PMSET
standbydelay 10800

standby 1

womp 1

halfdim 1

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

powernap 1

gpuswitch 2

networkoversleep 0

disksleep 10

sleep 1 (sleep prevented by backupd)

autopoweroffdelay 28800

hibernatemode 3

autopoweroff 1

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 10

acwake 0

lidwake 1

Thank you for sharing your experience, first.
Could you please check if your hibernatefile existing in '/var/vm/sleepimage' is generated normally?
For example, if the file was made normally during the night and your MacBook can wake up without kernel panic, the hibernation would work well, I think.

In addition, can you check how many amounts does your MacBook consume the battery during closing the lid without ac power?

Thank you in advance!

Hello everybody,

I have to upgrade my son's MBA13" from 2015 (reported as 7.2) and was looking at the Trascend solutions which lead me the first doubt since on their website it states that either the JetDrive 520 or 820 are suitable and this is the first issue even tho I guess the 820 only being newer/faster and without the case to house the removed SSD but they come very expensive for the offered storage, the cheapest I could find on Amazon for 250GB is in the 170 euros range so I am evaluating the other road of a regular SSD (let's call it regular, I mean a regular form factor for laptops) with an adapter but I don't want to incur on rebooting, kernel panics or issues related to OS updates, is the alternative route feasible and convenient or do I better go for a Trascend one as to sleep quiet nights?

Thank you

I tried last night and just closed the lid. Disconnected it from the mains. At 21:45 it updated the sleepimage (ls -lh /private/var/vm/sleepimage, size 1 Gb) and I woke it up at 0900 this morning without kernel panic. The battery was still on 100 %.

First post here but as someone following this thread off & on for a while I decided to chime in because this deal just showed up: https://www.rakuten.com/shop/adata/product/ASX7000NP-512GT/

Yea, a 512GB for $127 (coupon deal). It seems too good. I'm afraid a lot of what I read here is above my newb brain, so if anyone wants to chime in on whether this particular drive might be a candidate for using with the Sintech adapter in my 15" Late 2013 rMBP, I would be all ears (or eyes). TIA

As far as I know, you're the only one who has no deep sleep problem, using 2014 mac. So I really wonder what the difference are between you and me. Yesterday I copied your pmset condition and re-tested deep sleep, but I failed. So I'd like to check my test terms again. Here are mine. If you have any difference, please let me know. Thank you !

Seems to be about the same. Sintech adapter is the big green one (Sintech ST-NGFF2013-B ?). And my Kapton tape is the ESD version. Taped it as described in this thread but very carefully and really made sure that I hade nothing in the open, I did it like 3-4 times before I was satisfied. And I also put some tape under the adapter.

I initialized the disk via Apple Diskutil during install, it found the disk without problem.
