Hi all, just an appreciation post to thank everybody in this thread since I spent hours scrolling this thread before successfully updating the SSD of my machine.

MacOS version: Monterey 12.15.1
Mac: MacBookPro12,1
Processor: Intel Core i5 1.7 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 430.140.3.0.0
SSD: WD SN550 1TB + Sintec short adapter

I have a MBP Pro Retina 13" early 2015 with 128GB SSD.
I updated from Mojave 10.14.6 to Monterey then replaced the SSD and installed Boot Camp in order to check the firmware version which was already up to date, everything else went smoothly.

You can see above the speed test before and after.

Now the last thing I'm considering is installing a kext for power management.
I installed iStats and currently it's 0,35 A under heavy use.
Would you recommend me ssdpmEnabler or nvmefix for my config please?

Thank you very much!
Of course. Don´t you hesitate the least.

How much more life do these machines have with official updates? I am finally getting around to doing this upgrade and the parts are on the way.

2014 models and bellow already at the end of official support since BigSur. 2015 models won't get Ventura. I believe unofficial solution will work just fine though. Even 2012 model running fine on Monterey.

Both kexts only help reduce idle power consumption (primarily to improve standby battery life and overall battery performance under light/moderate usage).

Heavy usage will not improve with these.

You need to check what's your idle consumptions.

SsdPmEnabler would be sufficient for most cases. NVMeFix can tone down the idle even more (near 0) , but not every installation play nice with Lilu & NVMeFix

Ok thanks guys.
I read the instructions on https://github.com/kvic-z/SsdPmEnabler and just wanted to check how to proceed before since I'm not really tech-savvy and don't want to mess something up.

I have Monterey so do I need to disable part of SIP first or can I just proceed right away with the instructions under the Monterey section please?

Ty.

Disable SIP first. That is the 'pre requisite' explained on the github page.

I'm having my MBP mid 2015 and my purchase from Amazon just arrived with -
Samsung 980 Pro
Sintech NVME adapter - This is the adapter i purchased - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FYY3H5F?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

My MBP is running Monterey 12.5 OSx.
My boot room is - EFI Version: MBP114.88Z.F000.B00.2204181521 (Boot ROM Version: 430.140.3.0.0)

Unfortunately, while trying to upgrade the SSD with the new one it seems the new HD is not being detected by Mojave OS and i'm really lost.
i tried to create usb boot drive and installing the OS from scratch but still not recognizing the OS.

Could you please advise what should i do in order to be able to use my new SSD?

Or should return the SSD i purchased & the Sintech adapter?
Please advise since i'm really lost why this is not working.

Thanks!

I had neither problems with Monterey 12.3 nor do I have them now with 12.3.1

My two MBP 15“ mid 2015 each with the 2TB 970 PRO plus under Monterey 12.3.1 are by far the nicest combination I ever had. Read/write about 2.800 each.
I recommend this combo.

edit: my 970 EVO plus run with Firmware 2.x

cheers
Could you please advise how did you install the new Samsung HD? since i do have the same laptop MBP mid 2015 and once installing the new Samsung 980 pro together with the sintech adapter the HD is not being recognized by Mojave.
Anything i'm doing wrong here?

Can you open About This Mac, hit the System Report, and show us the screen that showing your BootRom version. (in Monterey, it called "System Firmware"

Because your information above seems contradicting each other (This one : "MBP114.88Z.F000.B00" and this one "Boot ROM Version: 430.140.3.0.0") you either have one or another, not both, ahahaha

I don't think you need to return your sintech.

Your system should be able to detect NVME drive,

you might want to try to update your 980 pro firmware, or pick another SSD

SK Hynix Gold P31 or Kioxia Exceria Plus is my recommendation

Is there is any other recommended SSD beside SK Hynix Gold P31? since it seems to be missing in Amazon.

I have the SX82000PNP SSD in my iMac14,2 and started getting this reboot reason since 12.5 and wondering if I have a bad SSD or did apple change something to trigger this.

`3rd party NVMe controller. Loss of MMIO space`

FW=32B3T8EA
CSTS=0xffffffff
US[1]=0x0
US[0]=0x1c

Was it fine, in, say, 12.3 ? or 12.4 ? or last time it works well was in BigSur ?

I installed 12.5.1 along with NVME on plenty of macbook already, and Monterey works just fine with them.

Maybe try to upgrade to 12.5.1 instead ?

Also, rebuild your kextcache, first aid your disk from recovery

and, delete all SOFTRAID & HighPoint kext from /Library/Extensions folder

It was fine until the upgrade to 12.5 and I have since upgraded to 12.5.1 with no change.

The only variable I can think of is that I installed 12.5 before the OpenCore Patcher supported it on iMac14.2 so my machine so I had to re-inistall 12.4.x from scratch and I can't recall if SSD problems were happening then or not.

I was able to find the SK Hynix Gold P31, is there any specific instructions beside the Sintech adapter for this SSD installation? should i prepare any bootable usb with a specific OS?

I recommend having a bootable USB installer and High Sierra would be the oldest OS I would consider. I like to start with Mojave or Catalina.

Hi, I'm new here, this is my first post and definitely not a Mac expert.

Without this thread, I would've purchased OWC Auro Pro X2 1TB to increase my SSD capacity (256GB) so thank you..!!

With short black Sintech adapter and P31 combination - both purchased from Amazon UK, I have not experienced any Kernel Panic or crashes, so far no issues and so much faster than Apple SSD..!!

Here the steps I used:
- Installed Monterey from bootable USB installer on 256Gb to get firmware up to 430.140.3.0.0
- Separately, installed the P31 onto PC system board's NVME slot, booted into Win10 (installed on SATA) and updated to latest firmware from P31 Support page.
- Attached P31 and Sintech together and screwed them to MBP SSD connector.
- Reinstalled Monterey from bootable USB installer- successful
- Installed Win11 using Bootcamp and iso - successful
(NOTE: i used non-TPM iso file and also requires apple driver injection after encountering boot loop)

Overall impressed with the speed and performance with power consumption similar compared with the Apple 256GB SSD , see benchmark below:

Hope this helps others who are having trouble with installation :)
