I’m part of the upgrade program through apple.

last year there was several months delay for the new iPhone, it didn’t come out until November. So people on the upgrade program had to pay an extra two months as we waited for the new phone.

This year the new phone is on time, but technically only 10 months have gone by, not the one year required by the upgrade program to be eligible to upgrade to a new device.

I got an email from apple though saying I’m eligible to upgrade now as part of the program.

Did apple fix the timing problem caused by their delays last year? Or at some point during this ordering process is it going to make me pay an extra fee to cover the extra two months? I assume the latter, even though it said I was eligible. And if so it seems unfair because last year we all paid an extra two months because of the delay, which means in total they’ll have billed us for an extra 4 months or $400 all because of their own delays.
I think you’ll need to pay the extra payments on Friday. I called Citizens Bank yesterday to make my 12th payment instead of waiting for 9/22 (which was supposed to be my 12th payment). You could try to call Apple to see if they can do anything? I remember last year I paid my old loan and my new loan in the same week since the iPhones came out later. I forget if Apple refunded me the payment to my old loan. Good luck!

I have the same questions. :)

It looks like AT&T supports eSIM. I'm going to call AT&T tomorrow to confirm it 100%. I believe you have to check with your carrier if your carrier supports eSIM.

I’m on AT&T and the iPhone upgrade program. Last year (or maybe two years ago, I don’t remember…), I took the physical sim that came in the new phone out, and tried to active the it using eSIM. AT&T reps tried many times to active service and it wouldn’t work. I had to put the physical sim, not yet activated, back in the new phone and we finally activated the phone.

I think it may have to do with the iPhone upgrade program. One has to keep the new physical sim in the new phone and active service. Unlike Verizon who provides the eSIM QR code for free (via email?), AT&T requires a visit to a store and $5 for a QR code card. Not all stories carry the cards. So I didn’t even bother to swap to eSIM last year.

I wish we could at least get candid photos of the new 13 mini colors before pre-order. Having serious indecision.

Not sure how I feel about it. Or am not sure I understand. :)

With GSM carriers, you could just swap the SIM card from the old phone to the new phone without calling the carrier and/or using the website to activate, correct? You could just swap and your service would work just fine on the new phone, right?

With the eSIM, how would that work? Would it work out of the box, or would you have to contact the carrier to activate said eSim?
The phones will still have SIM slots, so if you're getting the SIM-free model, then you can just swap your SIM.

If you're getting a model on one of the carriers through Apple, it sounds to me like it should be the same as always—when you turn your phone on for the first time, it will go through the process of activating your line on the new phone. The only difference is the phone won't have a SIM card preinstalled and the eSIM is what will be in use instead.

Does this clear things up a bit?

I pre-registered for the iPhone 13 Pro Max in Silver! The trade in value for my 12PM was more than I expected so I went with the 512GB. Anyone else worried about the weight for the 13PM? I do wonder how noticeable it will be…

I'm deciding whether to have it delivered to me or do in-store pick up. I've done both. Luckily I have Next Friday off so I could choose to pick it up.

I also prefer delivery because from my experience, you get the recently made phones if you do delivery, oppose to the ones for in-store as they tend to have the ones made in Early August.

LOL. It will be 7 AM CST so I will have no issues with waking up. I usually wake up at 6 am on Fridays because my work starts at 8 am. Luckily I am currently on paternity leave so I have this 2 weeks off.
Congrats on the new addition to your family

So I'm not sure if anything changed since the last time I pre-ordered a phone, so I wanted to poll the group.

I'm seeing you can already pre-pre-order on Apple, which is awesome. However, I was planning on going through Verizon again to pre-order on Friday. Is that still a thing that you can pre-order through your carrier? Please pardon my ignorance, last phone I pre-ordered was my XS three years ago!

Thanks in advance :)

Ditto. Keeping my 12PM (and my AWS3)..... but ended up ordering that great iPad Mini (that one was a pleasant surprise!) and will be ordering a new MBP soon.

Enjoy the tracking everyone! Ciao.
Yeah I picked up a mini as well. I bought a mini 5 last Nov from BBuy for $299, Apple is giving me $225 for it....so not bad $74 rental for almost a year :D

If you're referring to simply going to your carriers website/app to pre-order through that particular carrier on Sept 17 when pre-orders go live - yes, you can still do that. I just went to the Verizon site just now - it lets you know that pre-order starts Sept 17th. Forgive me if I misunderstood your question, though.

I have found that going through my carrier (Verizon) offers the best trade in amount for my phone and the process was very easy since they had all of my information, the line I wanted to upgrade on my family plan, etc.

I have had a better shopping experience with ordering from Apple directly. Also, it seems that if you get 9/24 delivery date, they rarely miss the delivery date. When I did pre-order with AT&T the entire user flow was not as intuitive. Also, I do think the iPhone Upgrade Program is superior via Apple as you get an unlocked iPhone. My boyfriend is currently on an AT&T Next plan and his iPhone will only be unlocked once he makes all his payments (24 months I think). I'm not sure how important that is for you as there has been very little international travel in the past 20 months. I'm also not too familiar with the eSIM and how that works. Like @DrexelGirl18 has mentioned, she's seeing better deals ordering directly from her carrier, Verizon, so maybe the same applies with AT&T?

In previous years, I have always pre-ordered through the Verizon site/app and always felt like the experience was a little clunky and disorganized, but I always got my iPhone on delivery day. Last year was the first time I pre-ordered through the Apple app and I am now wondering to myself why I didn't do this years before? The experience of pre-ordering through Apple is a smooth and simple process. It will be my preferred method of pre-ordering from now on :)
