There definitely is. In 2011 I ordered a BMW (to my specs, so not off the dealer lot) which was built in Munich, Germany. The tracking was fantastic.
BMW showed your EXACT vehicle while on the assembly line (tracked via VIN #, along with a photo of it on the assembly line), and then you could track it leaving Munich by truck to the port in Bremen, Germany (the Bremerhaven car terminal).

From the port, the ship was easily tracked for like 3 weeks or so across the Atlantic until it arrived in the port in New Jersey (just outside NYC).
