I have problems copying files to my PC external HDD (EXfat/smb) from my Mac mini M1.
The preparation of the file takes a very long time depending on the file size. Once it sends the file, it may fail and the process aborts.
Have no problems copying to PC internal ssd (NTFS).
So frustrating that I was forced to reinstall to Monterey again.
I have never had this issue before.
That’s a lot of work with numerous computers at a business.

I updated Backblaze and rebooted - that didn't fix it.

Deleted custom drive icons - didn't fix it.

Rebooted after deleting custom drive icons - fixed it. For now.

Can confirm that removing the custom icons for my shared folders and drives did the trick. Can't believe that was the cause, of all things...

I’m going to wait see if update comes. Till then Dropbox is answer .
Unfortunately for me I need SMB working for Time Machine and network backups. I have a 2012 MacMini on Catalina that now does not connect to 27" 5K 2017 iMac running Ventura 13.2. Chronosync backs from Mac Mini to iMac via SMB. Been working well for years until now. M1 MacBook Air on 13.2 works fine. SMB works fine on that. Weird. Apparently Apple knows about this so I'm hoping it will be fixed soon. I do wish Apple QA gets better soon.

Frustrating isn’t it especially when you pay people to help find the issues. 😞

I've only seen Apple QA get progressively worse over the years. I only expect it to continue the trend.
Yep, major releases start worse every year and once the mature and becomes stable they release a whole new release with even worse QA and round and round we go. I must wait to upgrade to the latest OS just before the next one comes out and be a release out. Don't always need to have the latest and greatest.

Exactly this is my situation now not getting convinced to upgrade until a few months later.

I had the problem of file sharing (SMB) in 13.2 from a Mac server causing Mac clients to hang. I switched off file sharing on the server, killed/rebooted all the clients, tried again, they all would still hang.

That thread mentioned custom icons. My drives had custom icons, so I thought "Why not try?" and deleted the custom icons. Now file sharing is working. I wouldn't have believed that myself but it may be there's some secondary effect at work there (updating drive attributes / metadata). Anyway I have file sharing back, for now...
This fixed my issue. I had two drives with custom icons. Removed them. Turn off filesharing. Rebooted, then reenabled FileSharing and it works again now. Thanks!

File Sharing came back but I lost all my custom icons. Oh well. I was on the phone with Apple yesterday but got no help. Read all sorts of suggestions on the web but no luck. Today I read this convo and thought "Why not?" ... Got rid of my custom icons for the files and disks I was sharing and replaced the aliases.

Now everything works. But all icons are the plain ones.

You do have to RESTART the host computer after deleting the custom icons, by the way. it's not enough just to get rid of them.

I notice some people saying certain attached drives don't show up ... perhaps they should try deleting the custom icons too.

No custom icons on my drives. So this method does not work for me. Shame.

We should not have to jump through hoops for a feature that was working for many years. Apple obviously missed it in their QA and so did the Beta testers. Oh wait, that's us. Feels like Microsoft now.

We are not the Beta testers with the responsibility to find bugs. Apple should be thoroughly testing all beta releases. They offer the betas on the hope that some people catch things. Apple has to try scenarios that public beta testers probably won't encounter.

I use Ventura and Windows 11 all day long. I see more bugs on Ventura. Microsoft is doing a pretty solid job these days. (But, I still prefer MacOS.)

My M1 Air on 13.2, no issues. My 2017 5K Intel iMac on 13.2, Issues. I'm almost thinking I should wipe my iMac and migrate everything over so to have a clean install rather than upgraded from what my iMac originally came with. But, then I thought (apart from being lazy and it taking a very long time having done once with Big Sur already) why should I? Apple needs to fix this. From this forum alone I know I'm not the only one with this problem. Apple knows about this - another person had posted this somewhere - reddit I think, so hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Definitely call apple support. You don't need Apple Care for software support. Add your voice so they take better notice of the problem. You should even reference this thread and the link I posted earlier https://eclecticlight.co/2023/01/23/what-has-changed-in-macos-ventura-13-2/. That's where they mentioned Backblaze, custom icons, and the fact that this has already been escalated to Apple Engineering Team.

Certainly don't expect support people at Apple to have encountered the issue on this site or reddit.

As far as I found out, file sharing does not work with shares that have meta-data attached to it.

For example: if you add a finder tag to a folder this tag adds meta-data to the folder

You can remove meta-data completely with Terminal command xattr -c "folder"

So start Terminal:
create a folder: mkdir MyTestShare
show folder rights: ls -l |grep MyTestShare
you get something like this: drwxr-xr-x 2 user group 64 30 Jan 22:26 MyTestShare

now add a finder tag to this folder and once again: ls -l |grep MyTestShare
now you get: drwxr-xr-x@ 2 user group 64 30 Jan 22:26 MyTestShare <- ATTENTION for the "@" symbol

The "@" shows that meta-data is attached to this object. Now lets see what meta-data type: xattr MyTestShare
you get this:
com.apple.FinderInfo com.apple.metadata:_kMDItemUserTags

My tests show with this you still can add this folder to file sharing, but you can not connect to it.

If you remove the meta-data with xattr -c MyTestShare and restart file sharing you can connect to this share.

If you add an icon to a folder, the icon is saved in a hidden file within this folder and meta-data is added to this folder.

Hope this helps

I wonder if Backblaze adds its own extended attributes to track the backed-up status.
