16” Pro Max / 64Gb / 1TB with Nov 3-5 delivery estimate just went Preparing to Ship! US East Coast. Looks like Apple may have been conservative with their initial estimates…
Same setup. Original dates were December, which moved next morning to Nov. 17-24. I’m hoping it will be moved up again, although dates coincide with when I will be at my delivery address (thanksgiving trip into us) so I’m ok if they stay where they are. It’s unlikely i would be able to fly to pick it up before that. Might kill me to know it’s there, waiting for me…
Re thickness, thinking (maybe wishfullly) it’s a little over-engineered for quiet/cool.

Partly because they know they screwed up with the 2019 16”. Partly because quiet/cool became more of a selling point lately with all the WFH zoom/teams leafblower sessions.

Ever so slightly disappointed the 16” is heavier than my 2013 15”, but will take quiet/cool over a few ounces any day.
I’m also moving from late 2013 15” MBP. I was also surprised it’s still heavier than that, but looking forward to the performance improvements plus I love that it seems like it’s heir - coming from mbp featuring ports to ports again.

I've noticed a lot of people are ordering with the M1 Max. May I ask why? I know the M1 Pro is already a bit overkill of me (I'm a translator and my CAT tools aren't that demanding in general unless there are huge translation memories involved), but I hardly see anybody with a M1 Pro configuration.

Looks as though the egg, ordered later via Costco, will arrive first - like at midday today ;)

Chicken via Apple Shop still processing

I don't get it either, it's the same for surprisingly many people (often randomly) boasting with "I ordered with 64GB/8TB yada yada" on previous models, without giving any additional context, for what they actually need all that ridiculous power/space. I doubt the majority of them properly utilizes their $5000+ configurations, but hey not my misery. The same goes for the Max. The M1 Pro is just as future-proof, if you are coming from an Air, M1 Pro, or Intel Pro. While in addition, it has better chances to stay cool, especially in the 14" model.

I wish more reviews would cover the 14" model with the M1 Pro. So far it's like 80% with 16" and M1 Max. But I guess once we ordinary plebs receive our devices, things gonna be way more balanced.

If there will be an 18-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip, then 80% will buy this one.
14 inch is to small and weak + there is no 18 inch = -> nearly everybody is buying the 16 inch.
Even my mother has an old 18 inch screen windows notebook and I like the size and the view much more.

14in is too weak? But can have the same internals as the 16? It might be weaker but hardly too weak.

To my mind (and body/eyes), less traveling and more ageing means less focus on weight and more on screen size. Hence, having once upon a time been happy with 13" and have enjoyed 15" for the last four/five years, 16" is the next step (rather than 14").

Having avoided the butterfly and loss of ports that I like, it's also why I was (relatively) content to wait on this M1X 16".

OK, to M1Max or not to M1Max? That was a question, but if you look at the sums for a big wodge of RAM - can't ever have enough RAM ;) - then the step up from an ungraded M1Pro to a ready-to-shift M1Max was a no brainer.

But if you have more adventurous travel plans (including travel-to-work), other plans for your savings and the benefit of youthful eyes, then I'm happy that you can enjoy the cost-benefit of the 14" M1Pro models.

For me……

1. 76 years old and this will be my last computer probably
2. Aging eyes so I need a larger screen.
3. Headroom to meet my possible future needs
4. Because I can ?

You can definitely have too much RAM. I bought this 16" (2019) with 64GB RAM but it's too much, even with the VMs I sometimes run. So I'm getting the 14" with 32GB. 2TB because my current files are around 1TB and with music production, that won't go down.

M1Max vs M1Pro? Yeah, I could make do with the Pro. But after adding 32GB RAM, it was only €230 more. I get double the memory bandwidth and 8 more GPU cores. Even if I won't be using them immediately, I know my career has known unpredictable turns in the past. Might as well future-proof just in case.

Why so? Altho' I've also opted for 32GB.

Also, why the Ardbeg 5? I generally go for the usual Ardbeg 10 ;)

There are so many people with so many different use cases. Who knows how many actually need it?
Do I need the model I ordered? Mmm... not sure. I definitely need more juice. But I ain't gonna quibble over a few hundred bucks on a one time 7 year purchase.

ordinary plebs? That's pretty much a tautology.

I probably dont need it, but for $200 I upgraded to Max 24 Core GPU, I guess it was the upgrade to 400GB/s memory bandwidth instead of 200 that made me do it

32GB because with the work I do, I like to have a safety margin. I got an 8GB machine in 2014 and struggled afterwards. 16GB is the new 8GB and I won't make that mistake again.

Ardbeg 5 because Apple calls the new chip "a beast". But I got the little one (14"), hence a "wee beastie", as you see printed on the bottle  I usually prefer my whiskies older, too, but it's been some time since I had some in the house.

Same. 32gb felt like overkill to me, but in 5 years who knows. It also seems crazy to get 16gb again when I had that in a 2015 model, 6 years ago.

When I built my last Windows PC in 2012, everybody said I was crazy getting 16GB. I haven't looked at it since and it's still going strong. And that's a machine I could actually upgrade! So I know first hand how nice it is to get a machine spec'ed just right for the long term, even if it feels like overkill now :) 2TB seems a bit crazy at the moment, when my NAS contains just over 1TB including videos for the kids (Bob The Builder, you know, the better stuff) that I will delete real soon anyway. But I also just started music production. Add a few sample instruments here and there, and that space is filled up in a blink of an eye.

Ordered mine last week!

16" M1 MAX 32 Core
64GB
2TB (Should've opted for 1tb in hindsight)

But I popped into the Apple store today and I don't like the space grey look which I have optioned. The silver looks retro, which seems better to my eye. You think it's possible to alter my order before it's shipped out? I can't find an option, seems locked in #1stWorldProblems

Curious what you thought of seeing the 14" vs 16" in person? Going to take a look today. Were you tempted to downgrade to 14" at all?

No, I wanted the bigger screen real estate. But in person the 14" did look rather fine, much better for travel than the 16" mainly because of the weight of the 16", it's heavy, I was surprised when I held it.

But I need to try changing the colour to silver.

Ya that's the call I'm going to make too I'm like 99% sure. Def go silver - there are still some reports of the space gray anodizing wearing off over time. Silver is the safe choice.

I ended up doing the opposite - had already decided on 32gb ram, and saw that going to M1 Max was only $200 more. In the end, I decided to stick with the M1 Pro 10/16-core given it's already more than enough for my needs. But I questioned that decision over the last week...

I've started to wonder now though, especially in the 14", whether the M1 Max upgrade might have a not-insignificant hit to battery life...
