I cannot think about future upgrades at this point. My MBPs usually last me at least 5 years, and there will always be a new shiny thing coming. The rMBP from late 2013 is the one currently getting replaced, so I'm not particularly worried about updating or the NEXT FANTASTIC FEATURE coming up. I am upgrading after a long life of my MBP and will not upgrade again until it becomes necessary, for whatever reason. It's my way, to try and pace myself (I'd be buying every new thing if not, to the detriment of my wallet!). iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad, I update every 4 years. Laptop 5-8 years.

That's about perfect! Same with me. Replace when software support ends, but iPhone usually around 4 years and laptops about 6-7. I replaced my 2011 in 2016 as it started developing graphics issues and speakers went bust. Otherwise, it would have lasted me a year more at least.

Anyone familiar with FedEx shipping timetable once the package reaches The United States?

My 16" MacBook Pro...

It was shipped FedEx International Priority out of China on Monday. Delivery estimated Friday morning to my home in NJ.

It hit the United Stated (Tennessee) early this morning (Wednesday). Now it's in transit to its next destination.

Now that it is in The United States, how is the package classified? Is it overnight or 2-day?

I have seen delivery dates change by a day quite often when it comes to Apple products and FedEx.

Will it still take two days to deliver?

If the package is Priority overnight and it's in Tennessee, then FedEx says next day (Thursday) to my home.

However, if it's standard delivery or 2-day then it will indeed arrive on Friday.

Thoughts?

When, purely for fun, you run Geekbench 5 on your soon to be replaced MacBook Pro to see what you were suffering through:

Single core: 797
Multi-Core: 3374
OpenCL: 1722 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (5172 - Iris Pro)
Metal: 2066 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (523 - Iris Pro)

?

I am looking for side-by-size usage when writing content, research and notes on one side and my writeup on one. Would the 16" be that much more cramped in Split Screen mode for this task? Also thinking about ergonomics. Desktop will keep my neck straight and my back upright naturally. Laptop - I will have to raise this screen and get a mechanical keyboard that I want (would get it with the iMac as well, anyway).
For side-by-side windows, larger is always better. It works, but barely, on my Intel 16". We use several rather wide spreadsheets at work and they never fit very well. I have an external 27", though, where they fit fine. Even if they don't fit completely, I can usually make the document next to it less wide so the wide spreadsheet fits anyway. A 24" imac should be the same.

If you don't need the power, then the M1 is a better option. If you need mobility, go for an MBA with an external screen. If you don't, the 24" imac is a nice option. Either way, your neck and your workflow will be much better off with a screen of at least 24".

Spreadsheets.. always hungry for width ... :(

Maybe I should also watch Dune on this night to make my day one big nerd ORGY.

Don't laugh.

It will be Orgy-rageous.

How many of you people are going in debt over this new MacBook Pro? Not that there's anything wrong with that. . . . ?

No-where near in debt for me! I actually amortized the cost of my current Mac for as long as I was hoping to have it, and doubled the price. I estimated having my Mac for about 10 years and doubled the cost per month. My mid-2011 13" MBA cost me a little over $1500 back in 2011. That comes out to $12.70/month. Double that gets me $25.40/month. Saving that for the same time period gives me $3045 to spend on a new Mac. The one I want is roughly $2600, so I'm coming out ahead.

Sounds like toy are getting the base model, which is actually $2499, or maybe you are getting the base plus 1TB, which is $2699, so some kind of discount? Either way, don't forget tax and Apple care, which will be another $600 or so, depending on where you live (I live in Ca, right about now I wish I was in New Hampshire, with no sales tax)

Luckily work is paying for mine, but I did have the money the saved up for a new one in anticipation of getting rid of my 2016, which I can now keep saving ?

I'm going for the 14", 10/16/16, 16GB, 2TB SSD. Puts me at $2660 from the student discount at the Education store.

I'm tempted to use my uncle's address in Hillsboro, Oregon to escape the sales tax, but that would mean making a 9 hour drive up from Sacramento to pick it up..

You’d spend as much on gas as you’d save on sales tax…

Pretty much!! If they were in Medford, I'd actually do it as at least I can make it there in 5 hours, but you bring up a point; the savings from sales tax would be eaten up by gas.

I HUNGER
My 16 arrived and I’ve played around with it.
Super impressed Apple! That screen is AMAZING!!! The keyboard is the best I’ve used on a laptop by far. The whole notch thing so far is a non issue. And the sound is fantastic. So impressed with this release. Not since my iBook clamshell key line SE have I been this stoked about an Apple purchase! The black on black keyboard looks way better in real life too.

The computer is so bulky though! And a bit ugly. But it’s a workhorse so I can live with it!

For those not wanting to see the notch in the screen, I downloaded TopNotch and have been using it since day 1 -- it works flawlessly. The only time you would know there's actually a hidden notch is when you place the mouse cursor over that exact area.
