I HUNGER
For those not wanting to see the notch in the screen, I downloaded TopNotch and have been using it since day 1 -- it works flawlessly. The only time you would know there's actually a hidden notch is when you place the mouse cursor over that exact area.
so you now don't have the extra screen real estate? The menu is under the notch and the whole notch area is just black? Or does it just make the menu area black?

I originally order on 10/18 for the binned base 14” with upgraded memory, storage and charger. Then I realized to get the 10 CPU/16 GPU for only 20$/mo more on my installments… so, I cancelled and reordered on 10/19. Original shipping was 11/11-11/19.

Just got shipping confirmation on 10/30 for estimated delivery by 11/9. UPS tracking shows estimate of 11/3, but it’s still in Shanghai so, I’m skeptical of that date (but would love it).

Been without a laptop since July when I lost my MBA to a leak in my camper roof. But I stayed strong and waiting for these MBPs! Thank god work issues me a laptop, so it was only my personal hobbies and work that suffered in the interim.

I just have it set to show the menu bar when apps are in full screen, that way you don't have a black "bar" in top of the screen and I'm using that extra screen part. I don't care about the notch though, doesn't bother me a single bit.

That's about perfect! Same with me. Replace when software support ends, but iPhone usually around 4 years and laptops about 6-7. I replaced my 2011 in 2016 as it started developing graphics issues and speakers went bust. Otherwise, it would have lasted me a year more at least.
Despite getting sandy bridge, the 2011 models had a lot of issue.
- cpu's ran insanely hot
- chrome dropped intel hd3000 support, so it became pretty much unusable on those machines (needed to use safari or firefox)

Mine’s been in my city since 9am local time on Friday, and it’s still stuck waiting for Apple (ie. the non-UPS broker) to release it as of noon local time today (Monday). Arggghhh ?

Edit: it was delivered around 4pm on Monday! It never even went into the Out for Delivery stage. Just all of a sudden the guy rang the doorbell and delivered it. ?

Immediately, bottom of screen, 3/4” flickers. Thin horizontal bars. ?
Called support. Started in safe mode.
Still flickers.
Updating from Monterey 12.0 to 12.0.1.
Will keep you all posted.
Screen flicker persists after updating to Monterey 12.0.1.

Referred from support to sales. Investigation opened. Got an email almost immediately, requesting photos of package, etc. The package was fine. No outward signs of mishandling or damage. I sent pics of flickering screen and everything they asked for. I’ll keep you all posted…
BTW, Apple have been quick to respond. Sales told me “investigations” typically take 2-3 days.

Nov 2, day 2.

Having sent pics and getting no email acknowledging receipt of pics, I called support. I was told 2-3 days for the investigation.
Support today assured me the issue was hardware related; most likely something done during shipping. Absolutely damage to box. I was bounced from support to post sales to AppleCare back to post sales.

As I was talking to one of the post sales people, the screen went black. It was on Safari, with my Apple account open. On restart, the screen is virtually black. The faintest of greys barely reveals the Apple logo.

I was able to learn they got all the photos. Seems I’m eligible for return/replace. (They send shipping label. I ship, they inspect; if approved, they replace with exact spec’d laptop, time dependent on availability. I was told by post sales I was eligible for expedited replacement through AppleCare. They send replacement immediately. I return the defective computer later. AppleCare however said no. I did purchase AppleCare. Cost me about an hour for that conversation.

Since the screen is now black, I can’t use it at all. Expedited replace/return would have given me use til I got a new one. But that is irrelevant now. They emailed me a shipping label. I Fedex’d it about an hour ago. It is on its way to Carlisle, Pa. To arrive on Thursday the 4th. I’ll get an email then on what’s next.

IF they concur; a new one, exact specs and color, will be shipped “expedited” when available.

There are other options. Return for refund. Take it to an Apple Store. I’d rather not deal with the Apple Store mandatory mask zone policies. Plus waiting for funds to be returned, etc. Also, a new purchase would show up as exactly that, with all the angst about how, when and where beginning again. On the other hand; using return/replace; processing, shipping and delivery will all be expedited.

Talking to a lead supervisor in AppleCare, she said she’s seen nothing like this ever.
Neither have I. Powermac G4, iMac core 2 duo, 17” i7 MacBook Pro, half dozen or so iPods, iPads, and iPhones. And two M1 MacBook Airs. Never an issue, except the 17” graphics (repaired by Apple out of warranty) and a spinning drive failure or two.

Everyone has been polite, helpful, and as surprised as me. Two support people assumed it was an intel MacBook Pro.

I’ll keep you all posted.

I hope they push your new one to the front of the line.
Thanks! They assured me they would do everything they could to expedite. I’m extremely curious as to what it is. The screen? I can tell you that when I adjusted the angle, it affected the flickering bars. Made me think it was the screen or the connections to the screen. But when it blacked out suddenly? Hopefully they‘ll be able to tell me… Appreciate your comment?.

Unfortunately, timing depends more on what config you got vs when you ordered (although the latter of course made a difference). Most people who got their orders already got one of the many base configs, not the build-to-order (BTO) configs. So it really depends on your estimated delivery date. I got a 14" M1 Pro 10/16 but with 32gb memory/1TB SSD, ordered about 30mins after it opened up, and I got a Nov 5 - 10 delivery estimate.

FWIW, based on the Pre-Order thread, most people start seeing movement about 1-1.5 weeks before their estimated delivery date. First your card usually has a pending charge, then within a day or two, it goes to "Preparing for Shipment". Then it's typically a week, roughly, until it gets delivered. Many people are getting things earlier than the originally estimated delivery date - I think you might start to see movement next week.
