Hoping for one last Intel refresh and then to get that so I can run both Windows and Mac on the one machine for as long as possible.

My 2011 MBP is slowly dying and I'm on the fence whether to get a M1 in the coming weeks or will I regret it when the replacement for the current high-end Intel 13" 2020 MBP comes out next year.

Up until M1 was introduced I was pretty much gearing up to get the high-end 2020 13" MBP, but now that M1 has proven to be better in pretty much every aspect, I don't think I'd consider Intel anymore.

1. When the 2021 MBP replacement for the high-end Intel 13" comes out (presumably it will be a new form 14" MBP), do you think the price will remain the same ($1799) and that the base configuration will be 16GB RAM & 512GB SSD?

2. How much faster do you think the M1Z (or whatever it will be called) will be than M1? Is it safe to assume that it wouldn't be THAT much faster? Maybe 15-20% faster MAX?

I'm asking because if I take a 16/512 M1 MBP now it will cost $1699, which is just $100 less than the current high-end Intel version, which already comes with 16/512 by default. So next year if we can get a slightly bigger screen (14") and retain the price $1799 while gaining even faster CPU/GPU I fear that I'll regret not waiting! :/

What do you think?
I had the same dilemma, my early 2011 13" MBP was dying after 9 years of use and I tried to do some maintenance to it by replacing the thermal paste only to make it far worse!

Cue me buying a replacement 4 days before the M1 announcement and I went for an early 2020 MBA; it was horrendous and no where near a good replacement for me MBP! It was slower than the MBP it replaced, noisy and just not much cop.

I returned it and went M1 within 2 weeks.

I'd say if you get an M1 now you definitely won't regret it, especially as there is always something on the horizon from Apple. I'd be guessing there won't be an update until Q2-3 2021 for the 13" and we'll probably see a 16" maybe late Q1 or early Q2.

I have bought an M1 MBP 13 with the knowledge I will likely sell it and get the 16 when that comes out. My 2013 15 is starting to struggle with certain tasks and I really need to replace it.

M1s will hold their re-sale value well IMHO.

Crazy thing about the M1 though. They seem to all be clocked based on the quality of the particular chip. I grabbed the base model MacBook Air M1 (8gb ram and 512Gb) and it was clocked at 3.20ghz. I swapped it out for the MacBook Pro M1 (16gb and 1TB) and it’s clocked at only 3.10 ghz.

Interesting, some sort of performance levelling to a lower baseline to let them use more of a wafer and keep costs low? When you can get performance like this out of mid-binned chips I guess you don't need to set up a system like i5-i7-i9!

Does anyone know if a 2021 MBP refresh would include more memory? I've got a sputtering 2016 model but I need more than 16GB. I'd like an M1 now that I've seen the benchmarks rather than opt for last year's Intel. TIA

Presumably they will at least match the currently available options, so the 13" 4 port refresh (probably 14"?) will have up to 32GB and the new 16" will have up to 64GB. You might well have to wait for WWDC or a summer MacBook Pro event for them though. I like to think they won't leave it right until next November, but that can't be fully discounted either.

If you're really desperate in the meantime, there might be a minor 16" refresh tomorrow which could push the price of refurbed units down a bit, perhaps you could grab one of those to hold you over and then sell it again when the Arm versions release next year?

Cheers, appreciate the reply. I can wait, but only if it's technically possible to get the spec combo I need. I don't want them to pull a "we could only get the battery life the way it is by crippling the memory--sorry!"

What do you do to require more than 16Gb of memory?
I know this wasn't directed to me, but as a person in a similar boat (wanting a newer components for the same price while typing on an external SSD booted 2015 MBP13 lol) I'm expanding what I do in my research (proteomics/bioinformatics/image processing) and it would significantly benefit me (halving processing times if not more) to have more RAM and threads ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I always wonder why people ask this.
Most days for average use I am around 27gb usage. 3D apps, rendering, image editing etc.
I am also on the border of maxing the 8gb ram on my graphics cards too so will be updating that.

so yep, never less than 32gnb ram on a pro laptop machine for me. I have 64gb in my desktop.....

Ugh. I'm still torn about returning my lovely M1 MBP 13" and holding out for the 14".

I've never been so impatient in my life.

(well to be fair, feels like I've been waiting for over a year now)
Coming from a late 2013 MBP with 12 gb left of storage. I just really want the "slightly bigger" screen (AKA less bezels - bezels annoy me)

Most people use computers for web browsing, watching videos and emails though. I myself mainly do this but with a bit of video editing in iMovie and FCP too along with a bit of image editing too.

I get by fine with 8Gb on my MBA and got on reasonably well with 4Gb on my old MBP (running 10.13).

I am aware of this but that is using a computer for personal use not productivity.

8gb is fine for most people on basic computer uses.

tbh I am very jealous of all the people who can do their work on a 13” laptop. I need multiple devices and all top end specs.

To tie this back to the initial question that lured me out of lurking:

I think many of us are actually quite in agreement that most are fine with MBPs even if some do need higher specs/x86 software 'cause it's so specialized, but that also means that MBPs would become misnomers if they don't allow choices for higher specs--which was the original issue.

I'm like meh no thanks at the thought of options not being avail for my line of work. If I want browsing and light editing, I'd opt for an MBA (incredible for its class/designed use) any day.

If Apple wants to appeal to "pros" by tagging a "pro", to showcase prowess, while not all "pros" need high spec hardwares, they should at least provide options. Otherwise I'm only picking up "ehh, but not you guys though lol" vibes from them

I just want a 14" MacBook Pro with small bezels and a promotion screen, is that too much to ask? I think we will get the 14" screen but promotion on a Mac is still years away :(
Both the new MacBook Pros and iPad Pros are meant to be using the same mini LED technology, so it’s safe to assume it supports high refresh. Now Apple are 100% in control of the Silicon supporting it is also completely in their hands so I don’t see any reason to think they won’t bring it with the upcoming redesign?

My mid 2017 MBP 16 only has 16 gb, and it poops out when I'm running SAS, google chrome, adobe acrobat, Microsoft word, excel, and Adobe illustrator simultaneously. There are times when I also need to run Microsoft Visio which is only available on Windows, and the 16 gb ram can't handle the workload.

Hey folks, do you know if there's going to be another Intel Macbook Pro 16" refresh in 2021 before (or at the same time) as the Apple Silicon one?

I don’t. Hoping there is one last refresh or they will keep an Intel model available when adding Apple Silicon.

I hope to get one of the last Intel MBPs

At this point I wish Apple would tell us what the heck is going on, and give us some transparency. It's been over a year since a new iteration of the MBP 16 inch, and the current model is a core i9. I need to upgrade.
Are we getting Tiger Lake-H or an Apple SoC?

I wonder which will be ready first, an Intel based 8 core Tiger Lake-H or an Apple SoC based MBP 16 inch?
