At this point I wish Apple would tell us what the heck is going on, and give us some transparency. It's been over a year since a new iteration of the MBP 16 inch, and the current model is a core i9. I need to upgrade.
Are we getting Tiger Lake-H or an Apple SoC?

I wonder which will be ready first, an Intel based 8 core Tiger Lake-H or an Apple SoC based MBP 16 inch?
I will wait until 2nd January. If nothing is updated. I will buy macbook pro 16 with oldest intel chipset on the market.

Why would you want one? The M1 is an amazing CPU and smokes anything Intel can through at it in a mobile CPU.
luck of good GPU that the reason I bought the MBP 16" with all the bells and whistles and keep the OS Catalina for now I just can't believe when you buy it 12/2020 it say 2019 model

I don't think Apple Silicon will support x86 GPU's. From the rumors Apple will be sticking with their own System on a chip design and make a pro version with multiple GPU cores. The numbers from the M1 are pretty impressive. A pro chip with more GPU cores may rival discrete GPU's. They may be equal or better than the 5600M, while also creating less heat and prolonging battery life.

We gotta have the best visual experience especially when we are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. We can't stop won't stop.

But, no mini-led technology appeared on the brand new apple silicon macs.

Any rumors about new MBP 16'' ?
couldn't find any new word on the street.

Also been on the lookout, but if they plan to do both ARM and Intel, it'd make sense for Apple to hold refresh until i9 of Tiger Lake H comes out (and might as well add RDNA2 graphics if those become available for laptops by then), while they release ARM near March regardless of how slow Intel will be (as it has been of late). Complete speculation here though.

Sounds like output wise, the consumers will benefit whether they need one machine or another, but $$$'s will be spent.

For me with my 2015 MBP struggling lately and because I can't find a refurb (Holidays? Low supplies?), buying a 2019 16 MBP in 2021 sounds like a possibility which I'd be financially averse to, so a Dell's becoming more enticing. Eh.

I'm in the market for a laptop but thankfully don't need to rush into anything. The M1 MBA looks mighty appealing but an M1 + bigger screen + more features/future-proofing would be nice to have. So my questions are...

- Any chance of a 14in M1 MBA in 2021?
- What minimum specs do you all think 14in M1 MBP will have?
- What sort of price tag do people think a 14in or 16in M1 MBP will have?
- Is mini-LED going to add a lot to sticker price?

I'm budgeting around $2k but was hoping to snag an external monitor & accessories with that as well since I'm jumping into the laptop realm. I'm curious to hear any thoughts on this.

- Rumors say a 14" should be released in 2021.

- The specs will be great. Significantly better CPU power and GPU power over the M1 13" MBP. I can't imagine they'll release a 14 with the M1 in it. It'll be the M1X for sure.

- 16" I reckon will go for 100 more than the current model 16, but some others say it'll be 100 cheaper or the same. 14 probably a 200-300 bucks cheaper than a 16" if they are specced the same or similar.

- IIRC when Apple released the rMBP the price went up. Not sure by how much though. But the M1 chip is cheaper to make than intel, so that's why some think price cheaper or the same. I def reckon more expensive. But nobody knows. With the crazy price of the Airpods Max at 550 bucks, these machines could be expensive if they have a new screen, M1X, FaceID and a new design... Actually I'm gonna change to 200 bucks more than now if they include all that! haha.

I reckon you might just scrape in at 2k for the 14. Not sure how much you'll get in terms of HD and Ram for that though. If you can get 2500 then you'll be laughing.

What's on your 16" wishlist?

Mines includes:
1) MiniLED HDR display with local dimming (4K with 3x scaling would be nice but not necessary, not sure how noticeable it would be)
2) MX CPU
3) Redesign - please drop the touchbar

I'm eagerly awaiting the new 14" MacBook Pro. I've been riding out my base 2016 13" MBP for sometime, almost pulled the trigger last fall but glad I waited to hear about the M1 reviews. I just got the keyboard and battery replaced in my 13", ready to sell it off and go all in on the Apple Silicon.

Some random musings of mine:
  • Thoughts on when it will be released? I think there's a slight chance of an announcement in the Spring, but don't want to get hopes up. I'd venture to guess it gets released in June alongside WWDC based on Kuo rumors.
  • Definitely will have a different chip than M1, probably a variant such as an M1X. I doubt an M2 comes out this year, maybe late fall at the earliest based on the new A15 in the iPhones.
  • I think this next wave of Apple Silicon will/must have the ability to at least drive two external displays from Thunderbolt and more RAM on package.
  • Excited about Micro-LED tech and the redesign. Also hopeful about potentially getting FaceID, I mean they have to at this point right? And a better web cam regardless.
  • Wondering if they keep the touch bar or this redesign will let us finally say good bye.
Nonetheless I'm very excited about what's to come this year, would love to start seeing leaks and hearing new rumors!

  • I think it's definite the 14" comes out this year, but with a revision of the M1.
  • Hopeful it's 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD just like the current base-high tier 13" MBP prices at $1799.
  • I think the Micro-LED could be a reason to increase price but the in-house silicon should set it back down a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes up 50-100 though, but obviously hope that it stays the same.

I thought I would upgrade finally when the reviews of the MBP 13 inch were so positive with the M1 chip. Fixed a lot of niggling issues. But honestly since I've waited this long figuring waiting for the 14 inch would be the smart move here. Obviously cannot go wrong just getting an M1 now. Anyone else waiting for what 2021 has on offer?

1) M-series CPU (whatever the name will be) with at least 8+4 cores and support for more than 16 GB RAM, but I think this is pretty much a given. What I am actually hoping for is SVE support, it would make for a real killer in numerical computing workflows.
2) GPU at least on par or above the 5600 in the current 16" would be enough for me
3) Some new screen tech would be very welcome, yes. It's about time, we haven't seen much in that department since the introduction of the retina screens.

Until then, I will be holding to my 2018 i9 (which is still a good performer, until I remember it has a butterfly keyboard lol). Hopefully our patience will be rewarded...

I’m in the same boat. I badly need a new laptop (currently using my mid 2012 MacBook Pro with an upgraded SSD), but feel like I can hold out another 4-6 months. I’ll probably wait until February when the rumors become more concrete and reevaluate whether the new models will be a significant upgrade from the current M1 Pro. A 14” mini led display would be worth the wait IMO.

Support for dual external displays (officially without using work arounds/display link adapters which have issues) and >16GB RAM is what I am holding out for. MiniLED and smaller bezels is a bonus. There could potentially be FaceID (or this might be delayed till 2022+, we know it’s potentially coming sometime as it was found in code..).

Do folks think dual display support is a software limitation or something with the hardware itself?

i.e. Apple was laser-focused on battery life so they limited display support at the release and may add it via macOS update later in the year?

I have a release 2016 MacBook Pro - using it daily with 2x5k LGs.

Am I wanting too much with the next version to be able to run the 2x5k and another monitor at the same time?

Hardware limited most likely - no good reason to software limit it, not even for battery life as literally everyone who uses external monitors will probably have their laptop charged simultaneously be it via the charger or Power Delivery through the monitor.

I'm in a very similar situation. I have a 2016 13" MBP, which I'm happy I upgraded to 16gb ram / 512gb then. I got a new battery / topcase last year when my butterfly kb had some issues, and I've been happily using it during a 9month and counting work-from-home in closed clamshell into a 27" 4K monitor.

I haven't felt the need to upgrade, other than the want for something new.

Although easier for me, I think it makes lots of sense to wait to see the full Apple silicon MBP line-up (high-end 13" and 16") before making a decision if you can. Especially given the rumors that 14" with new design is expected in Q2/Q3, I think I would definitely feel regret if I bought a current 13" (which looks exactly the same as my 2016) a few months before a newly designed (and better performing) 14" were to come out.

It is an m1 limitation for the dual usb4 ports and 16gb ram
The M1x from the next 14” will offer 4 ports and supp for multiple displays 4 ports and 32 gb ram
The 16” will come on the new A15 gen 2 5nm+ With support for 32 and 64 gb ram. Probably it will be called M2 with bigger gpu on the SoC
