I have a feeling that when the next round of chips comes out that the M1 with limited upgrade options will remain for the existing low end models to encourage those needing faster performance, lots of storage or lots of RAM or more ports to go for the higher end models.
Yeah, I think so too. In the Intel era, they also had lower spec'ed chips in the 2 port models. In practice, they were just as fast because the turbo speed was the same. But the principle is: lower port count = lower CPU spec. Sticking with an M1 in the lower versions + M1X in the higher end would be logical. Then M2/M2X next year. Take the year and subtract 2020 for the chip number :)

The non-TB MBP CPU specs were quite different, it was a 15W TDP CPU versus the usual 28W on 13’MBP. Given the thermal envelop is for the CPU + iGPU, I can’t believe their performance was similar, esp in games.

Is anyone else really curious and kinda nervous about what the new MBP will look like, aesthetically? I think the basic design of the 2016 & later MacBook Pros is beautiful and sleek...The 16" updates made the bezel even thinner and redid some keys... What do you think the new ones will look like or resemble?

I guess the published renders (used on macrumors for instance) might be quite accurate : it will be more "boxy" (à la current ipads and iphones) but probably also thinner.

Curious, yes. Nervous, no. I do hope they will consider more colors for the MBP as well, now it's just silver and darker silver. Although I probably will go for silver again anyway, as I'm boring like that haha.

Aesthetics are the one area where I’m never nervous with Apple.

Well if you recall we did get some leaked schematics back in the spring. The schematics came from one of Apples manufacturing partners (which tells us it’s probably a final design ready for mass production) and they also leaked schematics for the new iMac which matched the newly released model (which adds some credibility to the MacBook Pro schematics).

So assuming those schematics are correct, we have a glimpse at the 14” model. It uses the flat rounded rectangle design from the iPad Pro with a nice tapered in rounded fillet at the bottom. The left side would have a MagSafe port, headphone jack and 2 USB-4 ports - while the right side would have an SD card (can’t tell if micro SD or standard size), HDMI and an additional USB-4. Judging by ports compared to the surrounding space, it looks like it will be a little thinner too.

Beyond that, we are in the dark until it gets revealed. Besides the look of the casing, it will also be interesting to see what color options are offered. The new iMac and the leaked redesign MacBook Air both show Apples willingness to bring more color options to the Mac. While I don’t think the Pro models will offer such vibrant colors, I do hope we get more than just silver or space gray. There was a report that Apple was experimenting with matte black.

I don't like the new redesign based on the leaked schematics and the renders that were published by Luke Miani on youtube and other images that are floating around on the internet. Hopefully when they actually come out later this year, it will look better than those guessed renders. I much prefer the design of the current 16" macbook. Just make the bezels thinner, put faceid and give us 5g support, 120hz displays and I'm sold.

Things I do not like about the leaked renders:

1. Those rounded corners of the chassis is reminiscent of the old plastic macbook. I much prefer the 2008+ era unibody design of macbooks w/ bulges on top and bottom w/ sharp squared off sides. Especially when I look top down on my macbook, the top panel has a nice shade of gradience b/c of the gradual bulge.

2. The top function row gets the full height just like the rest of the keys forcing the trackpad to be smaller. I don't like that compromise. Why does Apple need to make the heights of the top row same as the rest? Are they trying to enforce that "consistent design" language across all their products? One area where macbooks were always leagues ahead of competitors was its huge trackpad since 2016. Many windows competitors are still playing catch-up and they still have not caught up to Apple even in 2021. If Apple were to make trackpads smaller b/c of this, it's a significant step backwards.

3. Based on the leaked renders by Jon Prosser for late 2021/2022 macbook air, it is likely that Apple will replace the 4 black circular rubber feet of current design by 2 long vertical colour-matched strips across the bottom chassis. It looks hideous. Macbooks are portable devices and people will carry them around. If I see those 2 ugly vertical strips from other people carrying their macbooks I will probably cringe. 2 vertical strips work for desktop b/c people don't see the bottom but not for portables.

4. The spacing b/w keys are more further apart, and as a result it is likely that key sizes will be smaller than the 2020 scissor keys. It doesn't look good. I much prefer the larger keys of the butterfly era.

5. The ports on the leaked CAD files are not vertically centre-aligned. They're closer to the top. Aesthetically vertical centre-alignment of the ports like current macbooks is more pleasing than asymmetry design. I'm guessing this is b/c the bottom chassis is rounded so they were forced to put the ports towards the top.

Things I like:

1. Removal of the "macbook" branding on the bottom of the front display. Looks much cleaner and cohesive.

2. Smaller bezels. No brainer. Apple is playing catch-up here.

3. The 4 rounded corners on escape, fn, touchid and right arrow keys. If the new imac keyboards are indicative of the macbooks' respective counterparts, they look good.

4. Return of the full heights for left and right arrow keys. Whilst inverted T design is preferred by some, I prefer Apple bring back the full heights for these.

5. Return of the magsafe port.

6. Removal of the touchbar. Whilst I'm impartial to the exclusion of this feature, its long-term reliability was a sticking point. Contextually aware oled strip that is changing is a nice concept but we've had years of complaints about the unreliability of the touchbar. Oled strips can never replace the reliable good old fashioned hard keys.

So, apple understood what most users told all years: touchbar was rather a failure.
Get rid of it completely, or at least give the option to omit it in a bto machine.

Apple, you should listen carefully to your customers...

I'm definitely looking for an upgrade. My 2019 16" MBP is still plenty powerful, but it gets so hot just doing basic tasks and now hearing that some features of macOS 12 won't be available for Intel Macs, it's time for me to get on board with Apple Silicon.

I never disliked the Touch Bar so much, but I won't miss it. I'll be glad to have more ports and hopefully an upgraded webcam? Guess I can continue to dream about that one...

What are the odds of this one? It seems like a no-brainer after 15 months of FaceTime meetings, but is the technology there now for putting a better webcam in the MBP lid?

100%. No way they’d release a new MPB without an improved webcam like they’ve done in the new iMac.

I think based on renders, the new MBP will be like a new 911, it will be another evolution rather than revolution. Which I am fine with, I just wish they’d shake the colour scheme up a bit.

Do we know the parts exist? I know it would seem weird for the iMac and iPads to have better cameras than a $3,000 MBP, but thickness seems like an issue.

The parts exist (look at what they can fit into a 5.9mm iPad Pro) it just means Apple needs to redesign the display assembly so it doesn't taper towards the edges so there's enough room to fit the camera module. At it's thickest, around the apple logo, the display assembly is probably almost as thick as an iPad Pro.

Really got caught up in the hype and sold my MBP 2019 16” in anticipation for new models. I do have like 2,200 squared away for the new model. Good news is I can maybe ask for another Apple gift card to soften the financial blow. Bad news is I’m heading to law school with 2021 12.9” iPad Pro. I have the keyboard so I think I’ll be fine. Just a little nervous about only having a tablet. But I think I’ll be fine.

Ask for another Apple gift card from whom? Either way most universities have computer labs available if you get in a pinch.

September is obviously iPhone month, so I guess logically that would point to August or October for MacBooks depending on how much of an announcement they want to make of it?
