Rumor mill is starting to heat up! Of course as we know from the failed WWDC leak, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, the recent leaks are saying:

1. Hardware ray-tracing in the M1X!! This one would be pretty big news and shows that Apple is taking the graphics side of things more serious.

2. No 64gb RAM. This one might be disappointing to some but as the M1 showed us, the RAM situation with Apple Silicon is different than Intel. 32gb might feel like 64.

3. Multicolor backlight for the Touch ID button. This might point to the button being able to show notifications, low battery level, updates, etc.

Again, who knows if any of this stuff is correct. The hardware ray tracing sounds amazing. It would definitely put the MacBook Pro in a better position to compete with other high end laptops in the graphics department.

Can someone offer a basic explainer of this?
I'd look for a YouTube video or something to explain it well, but basically an advanced light rendering feature, mainly for games, but I guess probably also useful for 3D modelling/ rendering and probably other uses.

Digital Foundry has done some good videos showing some games with ray tracing on and off for comparison.

General ray tracing is nothing new. It’s a term used mostly in the 3D modeling world and it refers to how light is bounced off of and interacts with objects. It’s a calculation that traces rays of light from their light source to an object and then traces the bounced light from that object into other objects and back to the camera. Basically mimicking how light works in real life. This is how people like myself who work in architectural visualization or other renderings get incredibly photo realistic images that look nearly indistinguishable from real life. The downside is that it’s very slow and requires a lot of processing power. This is why it’s mostly used for still images or for CG movies where rendering times don’t matter as much. With high quality ray tracing, just 1 frame can take several hours!

Now hardware ray tracing is relatively new. The concept is basically the same (tracing light to objects and tracing light bounces) but the computation is done on the GPU and the process is done a lot more faster. Now the quality is not nearly as good as a pre-rendered animation or image but the speed allows it to be used in far more ways. Rather than waiting for several hours for 1 frame, you can now get 30-60 frames per second! This opens up ray tracing to games and even for 3D modelers, the ability to see real time ray tracing gives a lot more power and in some cases the real time ray tracing is good enough to use for a final image or animation which saves TONS of time.

Obviously there’s a lot more to the story but that’s the quick and easy version. Hardware ray tracing has been a big thing since the Nvidia 2XXX series and the PS5 and Xbox Series X have made it even more popular.

For the MacBook Pros, having hardware ray tracing will be a big benefit for those in the 3D modeling industry and it should open up more doors for games (better lighting, realistic reflections, better shadows). I’d also suspect that Apple will add ray tracing abilities to Final Cut and Motion to speed up effects and allow new effects. But most of all (if the rumor is true) it’s just nice to see apple taking graphics technology seriously which is something they definitely have not done before.

Sorry for the long comment 😂

that to be useful must be on the outside of the laptop, not on the inside where you can see yourself the notification and the battery
pre-retina had on the side led , so when the laptop was closed you can see the battery status etc without opening the lid

And 64 not being there when others said it will be as an option for the bigger 16" at least or for the bigger imac (since the m1x probably will make its way to that too)...that makes 2 reasons not to trust the leaker or the source from where you took these predictions

Miani has a fair track record. I can see how the TouchID crown could illuminate to accompany unlock and Apple Pay actions. Very gimmicky but why not.

no he doesnt...last one was new airpods in May. Now that you mention that these rumours come from him, i can see why these rumours are strange

Slight change of topic, but what do we expect SSD wise? A new PCIE 4.0 controller and 5,000 MB/s? Current models seem limited by PCIE 3 at around 3,300 MB/s.

I have an 15“ 2015 mbp and actually it’s still strong. What is your main purpose to upgrade ?
not sufficient power for 3DCAD application (VectorWorks), 8Gb of RAM, 2core Cpu and weak iGPU... also my car is 6 year old, for IT tech its a century!

DigiTimes says the new MacBook Pros are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of the year, which runs from October through December. The publication previously cited sources claiming an end-of-third-quarter launch for the new models, but early fourth quarter is more in line with industry expectations.

As someone who uses their MBP closed and attached to an external monitor (34" UW), and doesn't have the desk space, nor desire, to have the laptop open as a second screen.... I would freaking LOVE the touch ID to be useful with the lid closed for transactions. Seems like a pipe-dream though.

Interesting. I’d argue an LED on the outside is actually less useful… If there are a bunch of notifications that have stacked up and need to be checked, I’d much rather be reminded about them via a light right at my finger tips within my field of view rather than something I’d only see if I look at the edge. Same goes for if I’m using an app in full screen view and can’t see on screen notifications. Also just because Apple did things one way before dose not mean thats how they will always do it. I remember when Apple used to only make phones with screens under 4” and said that was the “perfect size”. Look how things have changed.

For 64gb of RAM no one knows anything for sure. We got a single report saying it would be offered and now we are getting a report saying it will max out at 32. Both reports deserve to be heard. Just like we heard these things won’t have Mini LED and then we have heard they definitely will have mini Led and it’s a big part of the delay. Things are changing constantly.

Whether low credibility or high credibility, a rumor is a rumor. That’s what we are here for. To read cool rumors to get us more excited abut what’s coming. Until the day it comes, nothing is certain no matter who said it.

Yea I think part of the reason Apple will not confirm or deny rumors is because of exactly what happened at WWDC this year. They want to be able to make a decision up until the last minute, there are so many moving parts. I think in hindsight they may have been better off not hitching their wagon to mini-led, but really wanted to offer more bells and whistles to move along adoption to apple sillicon.

Mini-led is almost mature. That's when Apple likes to adopt new technologies. It frequently works well for them, but sometimes doesn't. Retina screens and SSD only machines worked well. But some people still hate USB-C only and let's not mention keyboards...

As Dylan reiterated today, lots of change of plans this year due to Covid and supply chain issues.

That is Dylan and not the user we talked about...Still, Mark Gurman didnt said anything about May release for airpods(pandemic or not), so yes, Mark G has real sources that most of times see the light of the day. Others only predicts and guess, or copy paste what the real leakers announce

Yes, i forgot that now the next MBP will not have the touchbar...because it was strange to have a led and a touchbar notification for the same thing...so yes, without the touchbar i can see that...but still, for me its just a rumour
without 64gb ram for the 16" and the bigger imac...it will be a step down, since, until now they copy paste the Ram amount from the intel part they replaced them with M1

And gurman is often very Vague to help his track record and why he never gives exact dates and often uses the Word testing and not it’s coming.
