Well I think this FINALLY might be the generation I upgrade to!
I've been on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch since 2012. It's been a FANTASTIC machine to say the least, but its getting slow, and the battery (even though it was replaced a year ago) is just bad.
The main things that have put me of upgrading since 2016, have been the loss of MagSafe, the Touch Bar and the terrible keyboard. The loss of HDMI and SD card reader also haven't helped.
So I'm hoping the new 14 and 16 inch at the very least bring back MagSafe and loose the Touch Bar, bringing back HDMI and SD card reader would be the icing on the cake.
I will admit I will miss my optical drive, I will miss ethernet, I'll miss repairability/upgradability and I'll miss the battery indicator!!
I won't be ready to buy till mid/late 2022 or even early 2023 so I might be in time for second iteration of the new design. I think I can limp through the rest of this year and possibly next year on my current machine.
Now given I intend to keep this next MacBook Pro for 10 years, I'm going to have to up-spec it significantly. I already am hitting the limits of 16GB of ram and have nearly filled my 2TB SSD.
So I will be looking at 32GB of ram + 4TB SSD at a minimum and thinking about more. What has got me stumped is whether to go with 14 or 16 inches. I've been a 13 inch user since the days of my Early 2008 White MacBook, but I see the attraction of the bigger screen real-estate.
The biggest downside to all this is going to be the cost. I spent AUD $1200 on my current machine.
If I go for a 14 inch machine, I assume its going to be at least AUD $5399 assuming prices don't drop

If I go for a 16 inch machine, I assume its going to be at least AUD $6349

Alternately I go even higher - AUD $8749
- 2.3GHz 8‑core ninth‑generation Intel Core i9 processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
- 64GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
- 8TB of SSD storage

Anyways that's a bit of a ramble. I'm really looking forward to what M1X/M2 brings! I'm sure it will blow my poor 2012 Ivy Bridge machine out of the water!
