Me too. Counting the days - been hell without a desktop at home after I sold my crapppy 2006 Mac Pro!
Currently designing on one of the new MacBook Pros. Just like the rest of you I cannot wait to get my hands on this incredible desktop.

iMac 27" / Quad Core / i7 / 8GB RAM / 2TB HDD

Can't wait for these to be released. Will be going with:

iMac 27" / 2.66GHz i5 Quad Core/ 4GB RAM / 1TB HDD

Same here. Though I'll wait a month or so for the i5 and i7 to be tested against each other, thoroughly, running real life apps like FCS and LS. Plus, I'd like some feedback on possible problems with these rev A items. But unless the i7 shows a substantial advantage over the i5 in FCS, I cannot justify paying almost $500 more for the i7 (it's more than $200, cause I'd be paying tax on the whole $2200 package with the i7, but not the i5 - only Apple does BTO).

^OldCorpse, why not do what I am planning on doing and save that $500 difference, get the i5 if you feel it meets your needs after reviews, and then save up for a nice SSD when they drop a bit more in price and get a little larger? I am sure that will provide a greater difference in every day use over the upgraded processor, unless of course you know you need the HT. Just something worth considering. I am in the same circumstance since the i7 would be more than the $200 difference because I would not be getting the store discount that I would be getting on the i5. While not the $500 you will be experiencing, enough to point me to the i5.

Going from 8 Core MacPro to Quad i7

Here's the old setup:

8 Core 3.2Ghz MacPro
4GB Ram
2x 1TB Drives (system, backup)
2x 500GB Drives striped RAID (audio)
2x External 500gb drives in a dual drive case, RAID 0 (audio backup)
23" Cinema Display

New Setup

27" iMac Quad i7
8GB Ram
2TB Drive
I'll pull the old 1TB drives from the MacPro, put them in my dual drive case and have a 2TB backup volume.

I Might partition the drive into a system and audio partition, but I'm not sure yet.

After I sell off the old MacPro and cinema display, it pays for the iMac + probably $1500 cash in hand.

Think I'm crazy for giving up the tower?

Hopefully on November 1st Apple will be able to give us a ship date. It's crazy that they have no idea. Obviously someone decided "in November" for a reason, so what is so hard about updating the customers? I'm sure by now they have a ballpark idea if it will be closer to the first or the last of the month, at least I would hope so, instead of flying by the seat of their pants.

Nope, not at all. Especially since you will have a newer and faster system and some money to put into your pocket. Best of both worlds imho.

Isn't the issue for the delay into November based on the availability of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 GPU? I read somewhere based on that it should be mid-November at the earliest.

This is exactly what happened with the early 09 release with the 4850. Everyone speculated on the release date. Everyone heard this rumor or talked to that person. In the end, no one had a clue except certain people at Apple. When it was released, most guesses and rumors were incorrect. You just have to be patient and assume it will be 3 to 4 weeks. Once they post the expected delivery time it will be right on as it was last time.

In the meantime, someone locate that great Star Trek Wallpaper on the Apple site.... Keep your mind off the speculation....

They obviously have some idea. In my mind, it's one of two situations: a) Apple knows that these won't be shipping until the end of November and saying "Ships in November" sounds a lot better than "Ships in 5-7 weeks". Or, b) Apple isn't completely sure when these will be available, so rather than give a specific date and possibly miss it, they're being cautious.

That's exactly my plan: i5 stock, then as the need arises add RAM, and when prices drop a bit and the SSDs become sorted out wrt. TRIM and other issues, go for an SSD. The only time I'd buy an i7 is if there is simply a dramatic difference in FCS. But for now, it looks like I'll be going with the i5.

4850 has been shipping in iMacs now for over six months as BTO parts.

The delay is almost certainly the i5/i7 chip or the motherboard required for them to work being delivered in large enough quantities.

Having it available as a BTO part previously vs. putting it in stock in all quad core iMac's as well as a BTO for the 27'' D2C iMac's are two different issues.

Go configure a 27'' 3.06 D2C and add the 4850 BTO option. Watch what happens to the ship time. Magically goes from 24hrs with the 4670 to November with the 4850. So it can't be the quad core chip or motherboard.

Neither of us knows what the delay is. It could be drivers for the new motherboard not being ready.

We can speculate all we want to on what the hold up is, but if I had to bet on it being due to a 7+ month old video card or a brand new motherboard/cpu architecture I would gamble on the latter.

It seems the graphic card is what's causing the delay. If you go to the 27 inch without quad core it ships within 24 hours. BUT if you change the graphics card to 4850 it changes to November.

So why would the drivers or the motherboard or the CPU affect the C2D fitted with the 4850? Do you have a logically answer to that? Otherwise the C2D with the 4670 ships in 24hrs, however the 4850 won't ship until November. There is a common theme here. I would bet on the GPU myself.

For those of you wondering, Sweetwater has listed that they are receiving the Quad iMacs on the week of November 15th. One can assume that since they are receiving during this time period that everyone else might as well.

I, myself am waiting until someone can clear up this "external input via HDMI/DVI controversy" before I make my purchase; this feature alone is the deciding factor of my purchase. I hope someone can come with a workable and inexpensive solution.

Sweetwater now says:

We've confirmed this item has shipped from Apple and should arrive in our warehouse within a day or two. Please call and place your order now. We will ship it immediately, the very same day we receive it from Apple.

I'm calling BS, why would they get it and our order statuses still say "November"....then again, I guess Apple would ship to all retailers first, especially since this model isn't an i7 and doesn't have any extra software installed or the 2tb drive installed...spend 3 grand to wait, so frustrating....

Part of me hopes that they ship out early and part of me hopes that Apple finds and fixes some of the issues people are having on the forums before they ship. Honestly though, I don't think anything will be fixed this early in the game. I would expect it to be a little while before the next revision.

Still gives me hope for an *early* November ship date. That's why I have this thread bookmarked =)

One more order in the queue for a full platform upgrade... 27" i7, 16GB RAM, 2TB disk with 2TB Time Capsule... Come on Apple, make it Nov. 1! :D

I live in the UK and the lady I spoke to said that the i7s would start shipping November 9th from China. She seemed very exact and even checked some papers...
hmm maybe her paper said november '09, as in november 2009. Just like the iPhone release was misinterpreted as the 9th of July, when infact it was July '09.
