...and by the way. Not insulting anyone
here. Just curious. I mean, I can't see
any program -- even CS5 -- that would
demand 16GB of ram even under multitask
situations.

But then again, I have never done any
of the work some of you are planning to
do.

what are the RAM limitations of CS5? is it still <4GB like CS4?

Wow, you must have quite a bit of discretionary $$$$$

Well, either that or I'm just crazy. ;) No, if I had a lot of discretionary $, I'd be going for a Pro with a Cintiq!

In all seriousness though, the big memory was about two words - video and virtualization. Well, that, and I detest swapping of course. I want to be able to boot that sucker up, load up my VMs and all my apps (and I guess I multitask a lot of things at once...), and just leap between spaces without delay. Memory leaks? Ripping a DVD to RAM while editing? I laugh at you! :D

This doesn't even seem that crazy to me though. My wife used to work in digital effects - now those guys use some RAM...

Well the information is still scarce but the release date is tipped around April 2010 and being fully 64bit there are only mentions here and there like "being able to access larger amounts of RAM" etc... but it makes sense, having the whole suite in 64bit should make it work with memory a lot more efficient.

I think CS5 is 64 bit, meaning it can use the full 16GB of ram.

being 64bit does mean that it can address an unlimited amount of RAM (basically). but will they put a limit on it, that is the main question. 4GB? 8GB? etc.

You are consent that the iMac will be shipped in "November" when you pressed the "Purchase" button. So why are you guys crazy for asking the exact date now?

I think I can answer that question.

No exact date was given to anyone, just
an estimate of Mid November. At least
that was the case for me.

However Apple has a way of beating those
estimated dates so until an exact date appears
on the website all of us are fantasizing of having
our i5 or i7 iMacs ahead of schedule.

Is it true that the i7 will be BTO? Or will they have them in the store once they are ready?

i7 is BTO only. The stores will have the i5 model.

DOH!! This changes my plan. I might be joining this waiting thread shortly! My friend at a local Apple store said they would hook my up with a Friend and Family discount so I was going to head into the store to buy it. If its BTO only, I dont think she can help. Looks like Im going for the Education discount and ordering this sucker this week!

Welcome me to the club everyone! Do I get a membership card? Or just the promise of "November"? :D

Because as far as I know, Apple does not carry BTO options in the stores, only the main models posted on the store site.

but you cant know for sure. for all we know the i7 might not be built to order. they might stock i7/4GB/1TB and then upgrade from there, that would make more sense to me. much less down time.

That was what I was hoping for too. I can upgrade the RAM myself but want that i7 chip for sure! Maybe a call into :apple: will answer this one.

upgrading RAM is a two screw job, simple. upgrading the i7 chip can also be done by you - but here in australia its cheaper to get the upgrade from apple then to purchase the chip yourself!

are you sure you need the i7? can you justify the 5%-10% speed increase for that price?

i doubt any apple workers that you can talk to will know the answer.

At the moment I probably dont need the i7. But Im trying to future proof (if thats ever possible) and go with the i7 simply because of the promise of HT. With that said, I probably will give it a run for its money. Often times I find myself encoding/ripping/recording music/photoshop/rendering and usually have multiple virtual machines open all in different spaces. Im not saying the i5 cant handle the job, but for a few bucks more Id rather go with the i7.

Also, I thought I read in another thread that the CPU can not be user upgraded? I cant find that thread now of course.
Or was that just referring to going from the c2d to the QC?

So you dont think :apple: will know if they are going to sell the i7 in store? I almost agree that it might be BTO simply because of how the webpage shows it. I guess only time will tell.

If you'll notice, the i7 is not a separate option -- the i5 is the default option and the i7 is an upgrade (like the 2TB HDD). When you order an i7, it is listed as a "custom" order (BTO).

I suspect with the next revision, the i7 will become a separate "stock" tier. At this point, however, it's still BTO. Apple stores don't stock BTO, so I agree with the others that the stores will not carry them.

thats the same as me, future proofing and because i can use some intense applications at the same time. quite often i bring my parents 2.8GHz iMac 4GB to a crawl. this computer will be an awsome upgrade.

HT can sometimes be a bad thing too but dont forget. the only real difference between the i5 and the i7 is for video encoding, which was about 20% faster. everything else was pathetic.

that would have been going from C2D to the i7/i5 architecture.

i think it will be possible. if apple is indeed using the i5 750 and the i7 860 then they both use the 1156 socket, meaning they are interchangeable :D

i wont say because i have no idea, but the BTO sort of sounds like it will be the most likely outcome.

robotkiller: thanks for the verification. BTO it will be then i guess.

I do a fair amount of video encoding. But plan to do much more with the iMac. I have 4gb in my 17" MBP and encoding HD video from my camcorder can be tough while multitasking. The i7 (and the i5 for that matter), should make these tasks much easier.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. And that makes sense.

i want to purchase a HD camera, i would love to get into filming and whatnot. at the moment its just uni with PC programs so fast VMs are really important. i do light PS and light gaming to.

i also need this machine because i have 10+ windows open on each space for my subjects etcetcetc.

apple would be silly to use different sockets! they would need to purchase seperate motherboards instead of keeping the same one in then just changing CPU.

I'm pretty sure you can order any BTO mac, including the i7, from the Apple Store...so your friend can still help. The point it they don't keep every BTO variation in a box in the back (they simply don't have the storage space) so instead they will ship it to you after paying at the store.

If you can't wait for shipping you'll have to settle for walking out with the stock i5.

I'm pretty sure this is true. Should have clarified that. I don't think the stores will carry the i7s in stock, for now, but you can probably order it through the store, if you need to.

In the past, the employee Friends & Family discount only applied to the stock models. You could not order any BTO variations and still receive that discount. That may have changed, but from his comment I doubt that's the case.
