SNAP! Sounds like the exact same setup I chose. Should be good enough to hold its own for at least 2 years to come and be useable for another 4 or so after that...

HAHAH I told my wife this computer was a huge upgrade and would tie me over for a few years too. LOL I wonder how many of us told our wives that for justification :D

Don't know about you, but the iPhone DID change my life. And the lives of several other million people who are actually using its full capabilities.

I'll emphasize that I was talking about my person, not you or several millions of iPhone users. I am aware of how great the iPhone is...I use the hell out of it.

How did all of you, who received upgraded shipping, go about getting this done? Did Apple just make the offer or did you ask for it, if so how?

Call them and ask the price for overnight
or 2nd day shipping.

Chances are they will offer to upgrade you
to 2nd day for free.

Don't forget to ask the latest expected ship
date just in case you get someone who knows
(which is doubtful).

Can you upgrade the RAM in iMac yourself? Is it complicated? Doesn't it void the warranty?

Short answer: yes, no, no.
There is a access door to open for the RAM slots.
Doesn't require removing the screen or anything. A child could do it.

edit: LOL beaten by besk one

I just called and was upgraded to "expedited shipping 2-3 days." She had absolutely no information about when it will ship, just November. :(

New Thread Regarding Latest Official iMac Ship Date

This may be the reason why Apple is
happily ugrading shipping.

To sum this up:

click here to view the 'official proof'

Now, if you look in "Regions" it says EMEA. As someone else in that thread said, that means Europe - Middle East - Africa Region. Therefore, I'm guessing it doesn't apply to the U.S., so maybe we are getting it sooner?

Just speculation, not saying that the U.S. will most definitely get it before anywhere else.

I am not saying that Memo is fake... BUT... it makes bad reading...

Yes it says EMEA, and all countries within it. But at the very end it says to get the customer to check the UK store order status? Would it not say.. " Advise customer to check the order status page from their online store.." as in the online store of their country? Why would it have a link to the UK store??

Just a thought...

Personally, I don't believe any of this... They'll ship when they ship.

We were told November. Sure, I wish it was sooner rather than later, but I'd rather wait and not have to go through the mind@#%@ that is returning/waiting again/dealing with repairs etc....

On another note...

"Update: After contacting MacMall, they tell us that Apple has given them an ETA of a November 5 shipping date."

From: http://themacfeed.com/?p=4390

I still think it won't be ready so soon and that Apple's waiting for the 10.6.2 to be released officialy. According to this article from Appleinsider...

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ta_packs_fixes_for_vmware_imacs_apple_tv.html

"Apple's latest 10.6.2 beta packs fixes for VMWare, iMacs, Apple TV" which is later on explained as containing fixes for AirPort performance issues on the newly released iMacs. I think they really mmihgt be waiting to fix the OS properly before realsing the "flagship iMac models" into the wild. This however doesn't make the wait any easier... :(

Steve: We need a cheap graphics processor that can drive 2560 by 1440 pixels.
AMD: Err how about the 4850?
Steve: Cool, how much?
AMD: $25 each
Steve: SWEET! I'll take the lot. How many have you got?
AMD: Umm, 97.
Steve: WTF? I need much more than that. Are you gonna be making anymore?
AMD: Dunno, maybe November?
Steve: Is that the beginning of November or end of November?
AMD: November
HAHAHA +72
I have a feeling that convo actually happened in some form between Apple and AMD, probably not directly from Steve, though.

Thanks for that.

Delivery date

I talked with Apple a few times for my i5 27inch.

Ordered 10 minutes after became available.

When I called back two weeks later, I was told by one apple guy that November 5 would be the likely shipping day, but if I changed the order, it could go to November 15/17.

The wait sucks, but the customer support and friendliness of the sales people is great. I too upgraded my shipping. We will very soon know if November 5 is an actual shipping date :)

By the way - excellent post about the Steve and AMD conversation!

Recession? What?

If only more companies in the US of A could get people excited to buy their products when they didn't have enough money to or weren't planning on it, we'd probably get out of this mess sooner rather than later.

KEEP SPENDING!

I did my part, and bought a new uMBP over this summer right after they put the built-in battery and SD slot in the 15". Could I have survived with the extreme heat, loud fans, and non-user-replaceable hard drive 15" 2007 MBP I had? Eh, i guess so. But I was just trying to do my part for the economy (or at least that's what i keep telling myself). And these iMacs make me tempted to buy a desktop, but I think I'll end up with a Dell U2410 LCD display instead. I'd rather have the 27" external display, but with the Dell I get 4 USB ports and the ability to rotate it 90 degrees for programming, which is essential.

Hope everyone enjoys these iMacs, I'll probably have to wait a couple more years until school stops stealing all of my money. But maybe by then a 30" iMac will be within range and I'll go for that.

Thanks, Apple, for supporting this weak economy. I have a feeling that if you release a tablet, 6/12 core Mac Pros and 4 core MBPs by Q1 2010, you'll only do more to help it.

(now I'll run and hide because I'm sure I said something wrong about the economy and I'll get grilled for it, then it'll turn political. Hopefully that won't happen.)

How fast is the i7?

I am placing an order for the i7 on Friday probably... I was just wondering exactly how much faster it will be with, say, Handbrake ripping a DVD...

And how much ram is a good amount to have? I cannot imagine needing more than 8GB of ram to use any Adobe CS4 programs all at once...
