So to add even more weirdness to this discussion, I checked the web today, and of course it's not shipped. So I called up to see if I can get free shipping, and told the automated system I wanted to "check the status of an order". It asked for my web order number and zip code, then proceeds to tell me the custom configured iMac (Core i7) is prepared for shipment. WTF? The reps couldn't explain it, but I wound up getting free shipping. I called back a second time to make sure I didn't dream up the robot telling me it was prepared for shipment. Got the same response.

For what it's worth.

It tells that to everybody. It's meaningless.

I think so...

If somebody was to place an order this week using the on-line system, do you guys think they could get free next-day shipping as well?

I'm ordering tomorrow morning... I won't get expedited shipping unless they give it to me for free... My experience in the past was that no matter what you order from Apple it will arrive within 2-3 days even when being shipped from China...

But... It sounds like the sales department has been given the go-ahead to give anyone expedited shipping for free to anyone that requests it...

With so many people getting the free shipping upgrades, I'm just scared that apple would stop being so nice n pull the plug on giving out any more free shippings all together.

So the delay is from ATI/AMD having to find the molds to produce these ancient cards again???? :D

isn't it bizarre that Apple could take up to 41 days (20 oct - 30 nov) to deliver a 27" computer with a rather average gpu?

i wonder why the could not offer a more muscled gpu at least as an option.
maybe shipping times would have jumped to 90 days, but it would have been worth to wait...
great world of non-configurable machines :D

Hello,

Just ordered an i7 / 4Gb / 1Tb yesterday, and made sure to check the remote to be shipped together with the iMac. This is what I got:

ishot20.jpg

As expected the iMac says November and the Remote has a shipping date on 27th this month... still November, but end of November... my guess is that the iMac has a November system-wide date that won't be changed until systems start shipping, and the Remote gets the real shipping date (as it's supposed to come togehter), but well... this might be just my hope tricking me into thinking I'm gonna get it this month! :)

Anyway it's a very late shipping date for a remote isn't it? That's suspicious...

I don't know about that. "Average" maybe to you and me, but the "average" computer these days is the $500 stuff that doesn't come with something close to a 4850.

When you restrict the market to computers costing more than $1000, Apple's market share is much higher. Most likely the release of the quad-core iMac has effected what ATI would consider a very large order for 4850s.

Apple doesn't offer top-end GPUs in their iMacs because the required engineering simply isn't worth it to serve what is to them a small niche.

IMO, this still doesn't constitute proof of anything. The new 27" has that nifty target display mode that will allow an Early '09 iMac with the 4850 to connect to it as a display, thus spoofing it somehow. In fact, if you look at the last line on the second picture, it says "Verbindingstype: DisplayPort". I don't speak Dutch, nor do I have a new iMac, but this would seem indicative to me that whomever posted these screen caps has something connected to the machine through the mini DP connector.

Dunno. I'm probably going to get flamed into the great beyond, but I just wanted to say that you should probably take this "evidence" with a few grains of salt. Just a thought.

This is all japanese to me........! Actually the remotes are out of stock aswell....!

I did the same in AUS and was told not to by the sales rep, she said if i did request shipping together the remote would more than likely hold up the Imac. She said in her opinion (could be nothing) that the imac would ship before the remote

Heheh, nice find. What some people will do to become an Internet hero.

I can't stand the wait after ordering something online, so is it safe to say that as soon as people on here start getting their shipments, I can walk into an apple store and pick an iMac up?

I kind of doubt that since the remotes are already shipping. I have mine and it shipped within a week of ordering. It initially showed a ship date of late November. YMMV.

Oh god you guys, I'm starting to go crazy. I'm willing to bet about half of those 35,000 thread views are mine. I can't believe it's been 15 days since I ordered. I really can't believe it might be another 25 before it even ships, and even then it might not arrive until December.

Tonight I started looking at other computers. There is nothing, NOTHING out there like this iMac. Nothing. This computer is going to be, like somebody before me in this thread said, a life changing piece of hardware for me. Just like my iPhone changed the way I do... practically everything. Apple has pulled me in, and now I want more. I can barely afford this computer, but I want more. I NEED that 32GB iPod touch. I NEED an iPhone 3GS. I NEED the 2TB Time Capsule. I WANT a Macbook Air. I NEED an AppleTV. Apple has my heart and my wallet... all I want in return is a ship date.

Imagine all the people reading this thread, just like me, lurking and hoping to hear something definitive. *whoosh* Just have to breathe. It will come... and when it does, it'll be like I never waited at all.

my credit card was just charged

For whatever it's worth, Apple just hit my credit card for my new iMac. I ordered an i7 on October 20th.

I'm reading the cards are being charged around the net.

Please tell me this is a good sign? What 'does' this mean exactly (historically)? I can't imagine they'd charge the cards if we are 3 weeks out.

Oh really?!?!? Nice...

That's a really good sign. Perhaps I should order. The idea of not getting something until some abstract date kind of kills the impulse purchase...

BTW- Is it definite that the apple stores won't carry the i7? There's something really nice about walking out of the store with a new toy.

I needed Apple to charge my card
early to conform with the rules of
my finance deal.

They said it us against policy to charge
cards until ship.

So, if they are starting to charge cards...

If I understand correctly, they charge you when you first order to see if you have the money and then put it back. And then they charge you again usually 24 hours before it ships, but I could be wrong.

huh...i've never heard of this

Wow. So FedEx delivers on Saturday right? Maybe Saturday at best?

Fedex Ground or Express deliver on Saturdays, but only if Saturday delivery is paid for by the customer or shipper. Or... if for some reason it's shipped via Fedex Ground HOME DELIVERY they deliver on Sat. with no extra charges.
