The wait

So because of the wait I decided to upgrade to an i7 from the i5 I orginally ordered after much contemplating. I figure I'll kick myself in a few years if I didn't get the i7. The upgrade was only 180 with a education discount. I asked if it would put it further back in the que as I ordered my i5 back on oct 26 and he said probably but it still will ship November. Weird thing is that it is still on my same order and dates Oct 26 on the online page but now as an i7 with a cancelled i5. Hmmm maybe I didn't lose my place in the que (fingers crossed).

So because of the wait I decided to upgrade to an i7 from the i5.

I hope it ends up being worth it. When I was looking at building a PC the i7, while technically being more powerful, just wasn't really showing a jump in actual useful power.

Hopefully in the future when the software becomes better at using multiple cores & virtual cores the i7 will spread its wings a little more.

I ordered one of these today. My previous Mac was:
24" screen
640GB HD
2.93 Core 2 duo
4GB RAM
NVidia 256MB graphics

The new one is:
27" Screen
2TB HD
2.8GHz i7
8GB RAM
ATI 512MB graphics

So an upgrade in every way. Also powerful enough to do a dual boot for some light gaming. Not the latest, but maybe 2yr old PC games will run really well. Have a new copy of Win 7 ready for that.

It's really fun to look at comparisons. Nice upgrade! I'm really getting excited for these to start shipping. Here are my upgrades:

17" display -> 27" display
160 GB HD -> 1 TB HD
1.83 GHz Core Duo -> 2.8 GHz i7
2 GB RAM -> 8 GB RAM
ATI x1600 128MB GPU -> ATI 4850 512MB GPU

I can't wait!

Ahhh, you have one of the original Intel iMacs. You must be one of those people who wait for major architectural changes to upgrade, and the i7 certainly is that. A sensible person in other words. :) Good luck with the new comp.

You'll be well off better than playing just old games mate. My 24" C2D from March has the 4850 in it as well as the same DDR3 at 8 GB & Win 7 plays everything top notch on this "old" machine. Right now I'm playing an amazing new RPG release called "Dragon Age" that is very graphic heavy. I run it native res all max'd video settings and it cuts like a hot knife through butter. Toss in the i7 you're getting along with the other goodys and she'll be that much more of a beast! Man this is making me want to pull the trigger on one now....step....away....from.....mouse.....must.....go.....grats on a nice system errrr order ;) chances are it will chew up and spit out any and everything you throw at it and will last you a long awhile.

It's good to hear some first hand experience, thanks. Some people have been saying the card is underpowered but I suspect they are going off sites and don't actually own one.

your forgetting about the resolution differences, the old 24" compared to the new 27" has a pretty significant impact on the performance of the GPU. there is nothing to stop us from running near 24" resolution though of course.

Couldn't agree more!

Here's my upgrade:

iphone 3gs 32gb -> 27" i5 8gb ram

have been without computer at all since
august and planning my first mac for 1 1/2
years. Aint that an upgrade?

Swiss apple store gives no exact dates
either. To tranquilize my excited soul, I'm
going to Apple store Glattzentrum at least
to see the 27" baby, even if its not my config.

Cheers from Switzerland to all of you out there.

Yes, you're right. Even on my 24" I sometimes run games at 1280.

IMHO with games screen resolution is not necessarily the most important setting. With desktop apps of course it is, but with games some of the other options (such as AA) can make a bigger difference.

Then again if you have a big resolution you won't need AA. Since the way AA works is that it simply renders a scene at a higher resolution, and then downsamples it to a lower-resolution output.

oh yes totally agree. i dont care for resolution or really the look of the game. as long as the FPS is above 40+ i am happy :D

i did not know that! thanks for that!

I know Post Danmark (the Danish post company) can be pretty slow, but not THAT slow :)

Well, it won't be sent by Post Danmark, it'll probably be shipped with TNT or DHL straight to your address.. well unless you have a code to your port, if you live in an appartement building and didn't write it in your shipping address... :) and it doesn't matter if they have your phone number, since they refuse to call, atleast here in Sweden :)

I for one am glad they have not shipped yet. My wife found out yesterday that she is entitled to a NUS card and she has just finished speaking with Apple Sales and have got a discount :D

She got a little annoyed at me as I was whispering in her ear "ask when they are going to ship" :p but they just said "Novemeber" oh well had to ask..

I just got mine today, I had it sent to the local apple store and picked it up there.

It's great. The i7, 8GB, and 2TB with the 4850 is awesome. I get 50fps on WOW running maxed out.

It's really fun to look at comparisons. Nice upgrade! I'm really getting excited for these to start shipping. Here are my upgrades:

17" display -> 27" display
160 GB HD -> 1 TB HD
1.83 GHz Core Duo -> 2.8 GHz i7
2 GB RAM -> 8 GB RAM
ATI x1600 128MB GPU -> ATI 4850 512MB GPU

I can't wait!

Well it took a 27 to finally get me out of my older iMac too

24" display -> 27" display
320gb HD -> 1 TB HD
2.16 C2D -> 2.66 i5
3Gb Ram -> 8 GB ram (after it gets here)
Nvidia 7600GT 256mb -> ATI 4850 512MB

Finally found my worthy gaming mac upgrade

Re:

This is getting annoying. I'm going to have to 'try' to pull back from this waiting game. Course by the time I'm successful at it, my i7 will ship.

My logic board is semi-toast. tap tap tap. My excitement is diminishing rapidly which is a shame because that's part of the fun. I just want a DATE.

You want a date? Get a girl. *zing*

Does bring back memories.......:eek:

You are correct....Exact same situation. Back then it actually shipped the day that Apple indicated all along. There was an similar thread to this one. No one back then had any idea what was going on and that included all the Apple reps. Apple simply does not put out any information and they do not tell their reps, whether on phone support or in the stores. For whatever reason, :apple: decided to do the same thing with this refresh.

I do empathize with the legit posters having gone through this back in April.

I still am using the 24" which is going to my granddaughter as I just sold the 20" I bought back in February 07 and had given to her. So, all I can offer is the advise to stop worrying as no one will get the correct answer as none of the reps are aware of the ship date or what is actually holding up the shipment of the i7 (in my case). There are 3 weeks left in the month. All we can do is wait. It will ship when it ships.

If I recall correctly, the 24" was shipped from CA and not China which indicated to me that they had the iMacs built and were waiting on the software. To this day, I still have no clue as to the exact reason for the delay.

So I do have some news, and not so great :(

I just phoned Apple Sales (UK) to check up on my order status and the fact that Apple deducted money from my account.

The woman being American, confirmed that the money is just a check and that they did not deduct anything.

When I asked her about not having any estimated dates of shipping and receiving in my order confirmation email from Apple, she first had a little friendly laugh and then admitted that they still do not have any precise date for the shipping, but does have confirmation that they would ship end of November. I did ask her what does she mean by the "end", and she said sometime after the 20 November.

So, I guess I need to wait and bang my head against the wall until it comes :D It is hard to wait.
