jddar,

This is your first Mac?

Trust me, you will never go back to a PC.

Yes, It's my first Mac. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm really excited! I just went to Border's Books and loaded up on OSX Snow Leopard, iWork, and iLife manuals so that I won't be completely in the dark when the November delivery comes.

The manuals are good to fall back on, but
really, you probably won't need them.

I am a postal employee and have turned at
least 7 co-workers from PCs to Macs. All of
them have sworn it to be the best switch of
their life. And, without any manuals, all of them
have been doing really cool stuff with iLife and
iWork.

Learning a Mac is very intuitive. You will
be surprised how easy it will be to make your
own movies and webpages without reading directions.

You will love Mac!

This afternoon, while ordering my i5, I asked the salesperson if he knew when in November my computer is likely to ship. He didn't know but said the delay was because of the ATI 4850. I asked, Is there a difference from the 4850s from the previous generation iMacs? Yes was his answer. Now, I wish I had asked more questions. Has ATI made changes to the 4850 from those in previous Macs? If so, what are they?

That seems strange. Aren't there already iMacs with 4850s out there?

waiting on a i7, 8mb ram (four 2mbs), 2tb hdd

ok, not waiting, impatiently waiting. and no, I don't have a ship date on my order status. It just says November.

and yes, the OLD 24" high end iMac had a $50 BTO option for the 4850 I believe. However, this new4850 may be specially made for the iMac, for what reason I don't know.

either way, what a tease. i seriously just dropped almost 3 grand to wait another month, FML. I guess it will be worth it.

Welcome! You're going to love how easy a Mac is to use.

For the most part, you won't need all of these books (MS users do). Apples are very intuitive and easy to use.

Wow, the infamous 4850 strikes again. :p It caused delays last time around as well!

It also had a pretty bad issue where it would make iMacs freeze (until they patched it).

BIG EDIT:
You are actually 100 percent CORRECT. They delay is not for the quad core, it is definitely for the 4850 card. If you go on the Apple Store, and you select the base (core 2 duo) 27 inch iMac, and then upgrade the video card to the 4850, then the core 2 duo iMac immediately goes from 1-3 days ship time to november. This does not happen if you customize anything else in the iMac.

Uh since when was Core 2 Duo a quad core???

The delay is for the i5/i7 and ATI Radeon 4850 systems

uh the Core 2 Duo iMac shipping changes from 1-3 days to 4-6 weeks when you change the graphics to a 4850 and the quad core iMac doesnt have an option for another graphics card.

so isnt it just or the 4850? the i5 and i7s are already out. maybe Apple cant get a huge shipment of 4850s as the stock has diminished because of the new Radeon series.

The i5/i7 iMacs have estimated ship dates for "November"

All the others are 3-5 days when not using the ATI 4850 option. That tacks on an extra 4-6 weeks. But that is a pretty popular card. It always causes delivery issues. And Apples stock is slightly different when compared to the PC versions stock. One, its flashed different, and two its (a smaller die? not sure on this, should be though) not an add-on card, it is soldered to the logic board, so it is a different process for Apple versus PC. Also, the newer cards by ATI and Nvidia respectively, have not been out for the Mac side yet. Most you can get is ATI 4870 and a Nvidia (not sure on exact model number, but its like the newest one) GTX 285. Give it a few months and the new ATI card will be out for the Mac Pro, and then the iMac.

the i5/i7 iMac only comes with a 4850, but when you add a 4850 to the Core 2 Duo iMac its shipping changes to 4-6 weeks (i.e. November), hence the 4850 is causing the delay.

the i5 and i7 came out this month and would be in high supply. the 4850 is now a last generation Radeon and so may be in shortage.

I agree that it's from the graphics card. I remember this article from earlier in the month.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...s-amd-stock2c-buys-all-4800-series-cards.aspx

"According to our sources, Apple was the Great White for Q3 2009. The giant from Cupertino bought complete 60-day, two month stock of ATI Radeon 4000 series chips, most notably the Radeon HD 4850. This "shopping" by Apple was caused by AMD's sales initiative in order to try to get into black for Q3'09. Remember - Dirk Meyer promised that AMD would return to profitability in H2'2009 - and ATI sales folks are certainly doing the best they can to achieve just that.

The new Apple machines will feature ATI Radeon HD 4850 as a more affordable BTO [Build-To-Order] option, complementing current ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB as a $399 option. We are not aware when the Apple BTO system refresh will happen, but expect an announcement in the next couple of weeks."

if you order now from apple do they charge your credit now or when it gets closer to being shiped?

I noticed that on the Best Buy site some stores show that they have the i5 in stock now. I checked my local stores and they dont show it as in stock but I checked statewide instead of my zip code and several showed as available. Maybe they are starting to show up.

I just checked in the San Francisco Bay Area and there are about 6 stores that say they have them in stock. Now the question is, Does apple have the education discount over at Best Buy?

I have pre ordered iMac i7 and they have taken the money already

Also saw the i5 iMac unboxing on youtube and wondered how the hell he got that so soon when they are shipping in November

I really wonder if it's the 4850M or the desktop version... It shouldn't be that difficult to get this information from Apple, should it? I mean you should know what you're paying for...

Anyway, still going to assume it's probably still the 4850M...

It is the mobile version. No room for a desktop version. This is the same GPU that is in the 24" released earlier this year.
