I question the concept that a base i7 is in the BTO category. Surely they had to configure a boatload of the base i7. I just wonder technically speaking why the i7's must wait a week beyond the i5 ship date.

I've had a couple of reps refer to the i7 as "custom" and shipping later... "More information coming out later this week"
 
Just ordered my i5, base config. Hopefully the fact that I ordered it so late won't push it back too far. My order number is W657XXXXX.

You're not blind. Even worse, for at least the first few days the dimension line indicated that 20.4" did not include the base, though that's been corrected.

Ignoring the base/stand, the main unit is 17.9" tall, 25.6 wide. The vertical height of the actual display area is about 13.4; didn't measure the width, but the black margin is a uniform 1", which would make it 23.6.

With the display positioned vertically (no tilt), the lower edge of the unit is 2.5" above whatever surface the base sits on, and the lower edge of the actual display area is 6" above the surface.

I measured one myself (so I could modify my desk), and believe these to all be accurate within 1/8" or better.

Looks like they're shipping all of the stock i5s out first.

i7s and any i5s with BTO options will be shipped after all the i5s go out, I'm guessing.

I ordered the i5 base. But, had iWork pre-installed and ordered the wired/numeric keyboard.

So, don't know if that qualifies as BTO. But, CC (Barclays 12mos same as cash card) was authorized for the full amount on Friday. Not charged yet. Shipping still says "November".

That'll be shipped as a BTO.
 
tried to get the upgraded shipping...

I completely struck out this evening. Called Apple and very politely inquired about the status of my order. Must have gotten someone who was having a bad day. The first thing she said was that nothing had changed with the status of my order and that it was "stated on the order page" that my order would ship "during the month of November." I then inquired as to expedited shipping. No dice. Strike two. "We can't give you free upgraded shipping. That wouldn't be fair to everyone else." (Probably true, I agree).

But, wow, I was a little taken aback. I'm sure she was just having a bad day and it was probably the end of her shift. But...

Slightly offended, I still politely asked her if making a change to my order would affect my shipment date (ordered on Oct 22) and she very politely said she would check. A few minutes passed and when she came back she said it wouldn't. So, I decided to downgrade my RAM to 4 GB. I'll just order 4 more GB from Newegg or someone else and save $100. Yeah, I known what you're thinking, it'll probably bump me to the bottom of the shipping queue. Oh well. Half way to a Bamboo Fun Pen and Touch. PS: Any RAM brand recs?

I've had good luck with OWC for quality and prices (otherworldcomputing.com)

FWIW, when I called today, the operator was irritable and immediately went on a prepared text about how they don't know when the i7 will ship and will not have any information until later. I think they are really getting bombarded now.

Doesn't change the fact you should get free upgraded shipping. Keep calling.

I agree. OWC is excellent.
 
What kind of RAM comes with the iMac (if anybody know)? I mean, I know it's Apple branded, but is it made by Apple, or does another company make it for them?
 
First to own i5 iMac

I think I might be one of the first to own the iMac. It will be here in 36-40 hours. I will be making detailed unboxing videos, side-by-side comparisons with the 24 inch, speed tests etc... for all you guys. I will keep you guys posted! Btw the salesman who sold me this iMac managed to put me on the top of the queue for shipping out iMacs. My order number is W656... and mine has been shipped already. Just a note for you guys that apple sales rep have that power.

My stock i5 ordered the day after launch has not had any movement.

When I ordered my current iMac after launch (mid 2007), I recall it took a couple of days after US orders started shipping before AUS orders started rolling off the production lines (and BTO a few days after that...).

Actually one guy on youtube already had an unboxing of the Core i5 on Youtube ever since about october 23rd.
