What I have heard mentioned was that they were not allowed to release the app with ios12 APIs until the GM. That I completely understand.
I have a real hard time believing they couldn't touch anything until yesterday. How can Apple dictate how they beta test their software? This isn't released via the App Store.
I expected the app to be in for review already.
But what do I know? Waze probably does not really care as much as we think.

That’s not what I said...but to clarify...as soon as iOS12 beta was released, Waze was able to work on their app changes...and they’re pretty huge, so I imagine they had their options mapped out before actually coding changes were made.

They certainly have the ability to test internally, but there is no way for them to release a beta to the public or even a select group of their users without Apple releasing that capability on their end. No different than any other app.

There was a nice link in the article in a post just above or below my first one that shows a European mapping company showing screenshots of their app ported to CarPlay. It does show that Apple will force Waze, Google, whomever to keep certain UI already associated with CarPlay.

But I think most people care about the routing and data info.

Looking forward to trying out all options as soon as they are available.

That is what I was unclear on, thanks. I thought with something like Testflight, they can have the full ios12 version running for a month or more because there is no AppStore approval needed.
It seems like a very inefficient method but oh well.
I'm worried we are going to get a very crippled version compared to Android Auto. Like not being able to interact with the screen which is what makes Waze so great.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Yeah...not sure car play will allow one to actually submit events or police locations with Waze. Even with voice. Guess we’ll find out soon.

Agree with this. I am beta testing another app that is using the iOS 12 APIs (I know this because they are appearing in Shortcuts). That's the whole point of TestFlight: to allow limited testing of the actual app using the iOS 12 APIs.

Waze is great if you do enough non urban driving (I use it to be warned about speed traps). I couple it with a Uniden R3 and it's fairly bulletproof. That is really the only reason I prefer Waze and want it on ACP so bad. I'll use Google maps, Waze, Apple maps or my car's own connected navi for most routes but always leave Waze running in the BG for the cops. I figured out a workaround currently but it's really less than ideal, would be great to have it on the main nav screen.

Awesome news Waze, if this was a month ago.
Are they really not allowed to beta test with TestFlight until the GM is released?
I didn't expect to see it during the Public Beta but I also didn't think Waze to be caught off guard by the news during the second week in September.
It’s on the WAY !!!!

Hello Dear iOS Beta Testers,

This is a heads-up to let you know that iOS Waze RC v.4.43.4.0 will be available in TestFlight very soon! Please make sure your notifications for TestFlight are ON.

Note: Remember to set your Waze Client to DEBUG mode after upgrading (type 2##2 in Search).

What’s New:

  • Waze on Apple CarPlay is available for beta testers ONLY and your feedback is needed more than ever!

How does one become a waze beta tester? Waze is my favorite navigation app....

I'm picking up a new car saturday and for the first time I will be having a vehicle with carplay included.. I am super excited... My experience with Waze in the past has been horrible.... They always re-route me for every little thing and usually send me a longer more local way... Anyway I dont mind apple maps like many people do, but would also like to give google maps a shot..... Will probably try Waze again as well and see if I have a different experience.... Or perhaps I dont know how to use it well, will do a little reading up on it.
I generally use Google Maps for routing. I also run Waze in the background enabled for alerts only. That way I get the best of both worlds. Waze routing is horrible, but the community alerts for road hazards, stalled cars, cops etc., is great.

Congrats. What car?

On another thread, I posted some pics of my car running a CarPlay enabled navigation app that’s been on the App Store since September 15 for the Korean users. I can confirm that the UI closely follows the Apple Maps on CarPlay. Screen interaction works fine.

Nice...I think the biggest question though will be if Waze will still show alerts and/or allow users to enter them somehow.

My guess is that at best, you’ll be able to see them only. Hope someone provides an update soon. The suspense is killing me. Hah.

Anyone that have the beta and can check if Siri Shortcuts are available?
To complete my shortcut i need the options to start a navigation (preferable without audio alerts) and then get a copy of link that i can share for my ride.

I want to provide a semiliar going home shortcut that sends a text message with a link of were i am at moment.

Each of those apps does something well, and something that sucks. In my experience:

- When doing longer trips / trips in areas with low coverage but unfamiliar roads - I use Apple maps for routing. Apple maps seems to load the route far ahead enough that even if I drop out of coverage usually it is not a problem, even if the map does not draw on the car head unit screen (the route vector still shows properly). Waze goes nuts as soon as coverage drops, it seems.
- When doing in-city navigation and traffic is dense, I'll use Waze, but not the default voice (find it really annoying). I worry about Waze starting to show ads for "nearby places" on the head unit screen but as I don't use it all that often, I'll live.
- Google maps is my least favorite option; I find it annoyingly verbose.

All of that being said - it is great to have more options!

I'd seen Waze on Android Auto (bought a Galaxy S9+ had it for about 30 hours took it back) and noticed it does not convey the "nearby places" to the car's head unit. Whether it will be the same on ACP or not is anyone's guess, but I'd suppose the behavior will be the same.

My only disappointed is that by the looks of the screenshots I've seen of Google Maps beta on CarPlay is that the interface and layout will be almost identical to Apple Maps, just with different map data being fed into it. I've never been keen on the layout of Apple Maps so I'm kinda bummed other nav apps will have to conform to the same visual framework.

I signed up on this page and this morning got an email saying i was accepted as a beta tester and should receive the testflight invite within the next few days.
Will report back when I get to test the app on carplay.

I signed up on Friday and got the acceptance email this morning.

But they almost have to in order for it to work across hundreds of vehicle platforms.

All we are really talking about is where the “bubbles” for directions/notifications, position of menu, etc.

I really didn’t think Apple would let them have such control over it. Apple Maps needs to be the “best” integration since it’s their system. And with the mapping changes they are introducing right now, it will be interesting to see the adoption rate of the alternative maps.

Having a hard time making this work. I cannot add WAZE to car play.. The plus sign doesn't appear for me to add it
