Hmm, just been wondering. Im thinking of getting MacPro to replace the iMac's and yadda yadda. However, Ive been looking around at extra HDD's on other sites, and all the 500GB drives have a 16mb Cache instead of 8mb Cache which is what Apple uses. Is there a reason because of this? Also, if I used a 16mb drive, would it actually work/would it affect the way the computer will run.

example. This is from the Spec list.

500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200-rpm, 8MB cache

example of the drive I've found.

http://www.misco.co.uk/SSinfo/~Q73988~/SEAGATE+Barracuda+7200.10+Hard+Disk+Drive+500GB+SA.htm

Cheers.

Hurray!!!! :D It shipped sometime last night. My weekend is going to be so much better now! I can't wait.

Once thing I noticed is that it says shipped via SAMEDAY RIGHT-O-WAY. Never heard of them before but they appear to be a Canadian company and I do live in Canada... lol

When I check the tracking number it says the package has not arrived at a SAMEDAY RIGHT-O-WAY facility as of yet.

Since Apple charges so much for their hard drives, I ordered my Mac Pro with the standard 250 gig drive and picked up a 500 gig Maxtor with a 16 MB cache. I got it on sale for $169 which is $30 cheaper than the upgrade price - and I have a second drive now giving me 750 gig of storage. I do have to say, the way these things mount and with no cables is uber cool!

Ahh, so a 16mb cache would work fine then? If so, funky monkey...

Drives from elsewhere are so much cheaper than what apple charges, so thats alrighty then.

cheers!

A 16MB cache will help accelerate things just a bit, startup, application launches, saves etc. So it's a win win no matter what. :) I'm not sure exactly why Apple doesn't use 16MB cache drives, be nice if they did but I guess someone has to clear out the 8MB cache drives.

According to tracking, my Mac Pro left Anaheim at 12:03 a.m. on October 6. Still no update after that, so I presume that means it is still on the truck to some intermediate Fedex facility. All the other system components (display, printer, etc.) arrived a little less than a week ago. My printer took only 3 days to be delivered by Fedex ground from Sacramento. Of course, the cpu is not only the last item shipped, it also has the longest shipping time. I keep updating tracking to no avail! :D

I am so impatient I even checked to see whether Fedex operates on Columbus day (answer: it looks like it does). Hopefully the machine will get here soon!

It sure is frustrating hitting refresh every hour or so and seeing no change! Throughout the weekend, I was expecting there to be a series of updates on Monday morning. . .

There seems to be a big delay in Mac Pro shipping lately. I finally got mine yesterday after it was ordered on Sept 28th. Very exciting to have the Mac Pro in my possesion finally, but I have to get a screen. Can't wait to get that now and I will finally be using all that power.

same here. all i gotta say is it better be delivered by Thursday, or i'm gonna break down

It has been brutal. Four days, and tracking just keeps saying "left origin" with no update. It's as if Fedex is mocking me. :D Of course, tomorrow they probably will attempt delivery but unlike today or yesterday, nobody will be there to receive the shipment!

Edit: UPDATE! The machine arrived at the intermediate location at 1:00, so it looks like it will be delivered tomorrow, and yes, no one will be home to receive it. Oh well, what's an exra day among friends?

If you live near the local distribution hub you can intercept your shipment there.
Just call up Fed Ex and have them get you in contact with the local supervisor.

They can pull your machine off the delivery vehicle and have it there waiting for you.

Be prepared to make notes of any possible shipping damage and be sure to record anything of that nature with the local supervisor. Scrapes, dents in the box anything that might indicate rough handling.
Cell phone cameras can be helpful too if you have one.

I always have my stuff delivered to my office just so someone is always there
and i don't have to worry about weather or sit around the house waiting.
