Im ordering our Mac Pro as soon as our trust send us the cheque. Phoned up Apple about the order, came to £3936. With my Edu discount, £2990.

I think thats a pretty sweet deal!

When I confirm the order, I'll post specs :p

well after playing around with my new mac pro, i'm kinda concerned with it. i know i only have 1GB of ram, but when running these programs:

iphoto, itunes, safari, ichat, eyetv

the system doesn't seem all that fast and responsive, as i thought it would.

any ideas why? iphoto has about 4500 photos, and just watching HDTV with eyetv. safari with about 4 tabs open, and itunes playing in party shuffle

Stop it you're scaring me now! ;) I'm hoping this is just a memory thing. From what it seems a lot of people think 1GB is not enough for the Mac Pro's quad cores.

Are you planning on adding RAM anytime soon? That would answer some questions.

Mines was responsive with the 1 gig. No slowness at all, just noticeable paging when i had photoshop and flash open. Safari does eat a lot of memory. Check Activity monitor, see if something is running. MPlayer is notorious for running awol and eating my CPU power. I never noticed any problems doing things, but I did see a huge spike in the CPU activity. From an avg of 9% to a spike of 40% when mplayer was not responding.

ok. i'll check activity monitor next time i get a chance. i'm assuming it's because i only have 1GB of ram though. but maybe not. maybe it's just a setting or something. i need to repair permissions i guess

I too just bought a Mac Pro, but just waiting for my ACD in order to actually use it. Upon reading a lot of Mac Pro threads most MP owners recommend 2GB of RAM which means I also have to come up with extra $$ for that.

Just bit the bullet this afternoon as well, got sick of the issues plaguing Apple's current protable line and since i have a perfectly working G4 i went for a desktop instead.

So i got a 2.66GHz/2GB/X1900XT/160GB HD/BT+AE system since i already have a Dell 2007WFP display. Est del date is 23rd Oct and the price came to £1730 with HE discount.

Now for the torturing wait.

I understand that a new Mac Pro is quite a financial leap for many users, but
there are countless threads in these forums recommending at least 4 X 512MB
RAMM DIMMS to take advantage of the Mac Pro's architecture.

I think you'll be much happier with your system once you upgrade to 2 GB RAM.

Apple is doing all they can to keep the initial cost down, but honestly 2 GB RAM
should be the minimum recommended configuration running 4 processor cores.

This is very true. There is no since in even having a Mac Pro with 1 gig of ram. I dont mean to sound rude but if you cant afford to upgrade it to at least 2 gigs, you really cant afford to have the Mac Pro.

well i don't agree with this statement. the whole point in getting the mac pro is so you can upgrade later. so there is nothing wrong with starting out with 1GB of ram, and upgrading later.

I don't think it's fair to put anyone on the spot or ridicule them for working within their means. RAM prices are outrageous for these machines.

At least you bought a Mac Pro and you made the right choice and you'll appreciate
that choice even more once you can afford to beef up the RAM.

I ordered my G5 with the stock 512 MB's of RAM and I'm still fine with the stock
64MB GForce 5200

I brought it up to 2 GBs of RAM and now it's running sweet.

You'll be more than happy as time goes on.

thanks. i agree with you. this is the reason why the imac isn't meant for me. only 2 RAM slots and only 1 hard drive, and you can't really upgrade the video card. i know the imac is a nice machine and is meant for some, but just not me. (i'm trying to sell my imac now)

but yeah, after i upgrade the ram, this thing will really rock! :D

I am indeed running 4x512MB in my Mac Pro to take advantage of the Quad Channel RAM architechture ... great for FCP.

For quad channel do the dimms need to be the exact same size?

i.e. does it have to be 4 x 512's = 2gb
or can I have 2 x 1gb's 2x 512's = 3gb ?

I've ordered my mac pro with 2gb, but I'm already itching to sell of 1gb on ebay and order a 2gb set from crucial :D

Well it is now day 10 since Apple said my Mac Pro shipped and Sameday still has not received the package. In the original email, they said it should arrive by day 12 using standard shipping. I was starting to get concerned that there could be no way for Sameday to deliver in two days if they had yet to receive the package.

So I called Apple a moment ago and spoke with someone who was half asleep but helpful. He called Sameday and they told him it normally takes 7 business days for the Mac Pro to get through customs and then one day for them to deliver. Strictly speaking, that would be Wednesday but I hope it arrives by Thursday, only 19 days after I purchased.
