Jazz night on Friday for me. I've skipped it or been otherwise engaged for a few Fridays so past time to reinforce my set-aside evening. Tonight, jazz pianists -- and a few trios, paired pianos, vocalists, a Swedish guitarist, even one round of 8 hands on 2 pianos-- all taking a turn at the same jazz composition, Charlie Parker’s classic 12-bar blues offering, Billie's Bounce.

Found a ripping take to get started with, Kenny Barron and Brad Mehldau as “dueling pianos” -- at the Umbria Jazz ’99 festival. After that, Ella Fitzgerald live at Montreux, 1977... There are a lot of interesting takes on this piece, going to roll a lot of them out behind the Barron/Mehldau and Fitzgerald ones. Happy weekend, everyone!

I just realized something sad ... these days i almost exclusively listen to music using headphones/earbuds.

I might have to remedy that with some kind of speaker/sound system for the apartment. Any recommendations?

Cheers

Well I got a set of Logitech speakers for my TV and just stream music from my Mac or iPhone through my Apple TV especially when I have people over. Otherwise while I think my iMac speakers are are one of the better built in speakers I've used I got another pair of Logitech for my Mac when I am on my computer surfing, emailing or whatever. I also have a Logitech UE Boombox for portable tunes from my iPhone when I need (otherwise my buds). I guess I am a Logitech fanboy as well as an Apple one. :)

It's Gary Numan singing a song written by Stephen Merritt; the latter has recorded and electropop bluegrass version of the former's "I Die, You Die."

In a coffee shop.
The Velet Underground is playing in the background.

An excellent choice.

Earlier, I was playing the superb soundtrack from the exceedingly good movie "Lone Star" (John Sayles's best by far).

This was followed by a few - "baker Street", and "Walking Down The Line", from Gerry Rafferty, "Bittersweet Symphony" from The Verve, and "Spiritual" from "Beyond The Missouri Sky" by Charlie Hayden and Pat Metheny.

And now, for some reason, I am listening to the superb "Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits. (Not for the first time this week).

Say what you want about hair metal, but put in the right place with the right meaning behind it, it can move you to tears.

A bit of background on this. Criss Angel is known for being an illusionist, and does look rather emo, but he is one hell of a musician, and is one of the main shows in Las Vegas. He even had a show for a time called Criss Angel: Mindfreak.

Anyway, he directed this video clip. It's based around 3 things: Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), a piano, and Criss' HELP foundation for pediatric cancer, as his 2-year old son is in remission from leukemia. This has been out for a year, but when I heard this on the radio this morning, I literally had to stop the car.

With that, enjoy a very stripped down, but very emotional rendition of We're Not Gonna Take It.

Listening to a classic from The Eagles' 'Hotel California'.

FYI: The Eagles are on tour. Glenn's son Deacon is filling in for Glenn, similar to how Clarence Clemmon's son is filling in for Clarence in the E Street Band.

I wondered how well Jackson Browne would be in the Eagles, as his voice is a match for Frey's, and seeing that they basically wrote half the songs together with Henley on the first 2 albums.
