I can't believe so many people have a problem with this, you all need to take a chill pill and kick back a bit.

The only problem I have with it is that I didn't think of it first.

I hope Apple block any copy cat apps to keep it unique.

In World of Warcraft you can buy a virtual diamond ring that costs a ton of virtual money for your loved one. did some people buy it? of course.

Yeah well this is REAL money.

...

Although come to think about it... real diamonds are very expensive. You buy them to show off or show a loved one that you care more about them then money. I suppose you could do the same thing by buying this application.

... of course it seems like it could be taken as "I love my iPhone more than money."... unless you put it on theirs.

Real diamonds are status symbols because they're rare (...)
That's what De Beers wants you to think. Diamonds are NOT expensive because they are rare, they aren't even rare, they are expensive because De Beers controls the market. There are loads of gems that are much rarer than diamonds which can be bought for a fraction of the price of a diamond.

Funny app, really funny replies.

One of my favourite threads here sofar.

OMG think of the children!

The comment about devaluing art has got me thinking though.. An artist could sell their art in an app?! I never thought of that - what an odd idea. I wonder if people would buy iphone formatted comic books? Iiiinteresting.

I think you're on to something. That would be a hell of a medium to distribute on. Comic books for iPhone.

What's the difference between this and designer clothing and jewellery that sells for 10x or even 100x the cost of identical items without the designer name?
:D

This made my day. It's the first time I've read every single post of a long thread in a long time!
This thread has been interesting and fun to read.

Personally, as someone who actually does live 'overseas' and work with the absolute poor, hungry and marginalised, I find this hilarious. If anyone has $999.99 burning a hole in their pocket them not spending it on this app won't help the poor at all.
:)

As someone who worked in the industry, so much of it is marketing and hype.

well, this is rather different from a designer clothing as that designer is famous for the label. this is a new company and a new app that has nothing to offer and so far, no clones.

it hasn't anything at all to do with labels etc. however, it does have a bit of credence.

seller is not smart

honestly, i think its a GREAT app to have in the store, and the developers are GENIOUS! if they sell it ONCE to someone who JUST wants it for a status thing, then THEY WIN!!

they are smart.. dont be jealous because you didnt think of it.

Seriously, i would be interested to see if that app does start popping up more places. I would think it might because now that the newer iphones are cheaper, more people have them and the actual IPHONE is not a status symbol anymore. there are ALWAYS guys out tehre that HAVE to show their status, so that would now be the ONLY way to do it through your phone.. So why not? I mean, i can give a HUGE list why not, like starving people in the city 2 towns over.. but why not in the sense of WHY is a diamond app any more ridiculous that a $17,000 purse?? or a $120,000 pair of cufflinks?

No, the sellers are not "smart." The buyer is dumb. There is a difference.

I don't know what's more depressing; that someone dreamt up this silly app, or that somebody will actually purchase it?

Comparing it to this one would make a good start. If it does nothing

This app does do something. It displays that the owner of the phone is a wealthy person

or appears to be nothing more than self-promotion, it should never get on there.

Sez who?

The level of quality on the app store is embarrassing

Welcome to the amazing world of mobile applications. You might also want to get acquainted with Sturgeons law

(along with this one there are several stupid torch apps). I have no respect for the developer, and very little for Apple's vetting process if they're letting this kind of crap through.

Well, most apps on ANY platform are crap. If we start having a gatekeeper who decides what apps are "good" and what are not, we will be climbing on a very slippery slope.

Getting it for free... sort of

I've knocked up a quick and dirty way of getting this yourself for free.

It's not perfect, because it's a webapp, but if you add it to your Home Screen you get the right icon and it takes you to a screen that looks almost exactly like the real app. The only thing is of course you get the Mobile Safari navigation toolbar unfortunately.

Oh, and I've been a bit cheeky and used it as a way to promote my own application...

Anyway. The app's here - http://www.orangebits.com/iamrich

Aren't you violating the copyright on his image by doing something like that?

Let's clear some things up:

  • This app is NOT a scam. It's silly, but not a scam and perfectly fine in a free market
  • Apple will not do anything and is not to "blame" for this. 3rd party ring a bell?
  • Anyone who buys the app is indeed an idiot.

Wow, how did they get Apple to approve that? If anyone buys it, the creator is rich! I suppose thats why Apple accepted it, they will get 30%, after all.

Or maybe Apple themselves made it! Its a conspiracy, man! :p

Finally a way to show your kids you really love them

The perfect gift for anyone who is divorced and wants to show their kids that they really do love them more! :p

Seriously though funniest thread on Mac Rumors in a while. Ok, so it's a technically a rip off, but I don't get why people are so angry about this. The developer is a genius. He's generated an unbelievable amount of marketing, and will probably even get interviews on news shows. Then some blog or tech news site will buy it for the marketing that they get just for doing it. So what's he left with: a few thousand dollars and his name in lights.

Get over it people, the guy is a marketing genius, and you're all just jealous. I'm a developer about to submit something to the app store and my first app will be 99c, which means even 1000 people buy it, I still won't be as famous (or rich) as this guy. I don't think this devalues the store in any way, these things have a way of working themselves out... ;)

The totally lack of a sense of humor from most people about this is fascinating.

I would be upset with all the people that hate this program if they didn't provide me with such pleasure with their posts of anger and hate.

This is going to be a good day.

I don't know why there's such shock and outrage here at this stupidly priced app. There is outrageously priced software for ANY PLATFORM. Software prices very rarely are priced at the actual cost to develop; They are priced on demand and your target market's ability to pay. Some of the very best software is free. Some of the most craptastic, unfinished junk costs thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars (business apps).

Now, in regards to diamonds--My favorite proof that marketing is worth more than any other factor when it comes to selling something... Someone had the idea to quite literally polish rocks and sell them for thousands. What an incredibly genius and morally bankrupt idea! ;)

Example subject #1 follows. He's totally convinced himself that it's not just a rock.

Er...when one purchases a diamond, they aren't just purchasing a gemstone.

That, my friends, is the power of marketing! :D

The De Beers company controls the production and distribution of most of the diamond industry, therefore they are able to inflate the value of the diamonds. And people gladly buy these value-inflated diamonds because of their perceived sentimental value (i.e. engagement rings, necklaces).

Yes, exactly. I agree 100%.

So, personally, I'm a bit insulted by your blanket statement that "Anyone who buys a real diamond is almost as stupid as the person who buys this app." There is something to be said for the additional value that goes along with purchasing high end gemstones for special occasions..

If someone is sold a polished rock and charged $7,000, you would say that buyer is smart?

What is this additional value? I thought you just said that DeBeers inflates the value artificially based on a near market monopoly. Aren't you aware that DeBeers is also responsible for creating the perceived value via the greatest marketing campaign of all time?

What is this additional value again?
