WE ALL CAN DO THIS FOR FREE. COPY, EMAIL TO PHONE, SAVE IMAGE, SET AS WALLPAPER, DUH! THIS APP IS FOR COMPLETE IDIOTS!

APPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR RELEASING THIS. EVEN RICH PEOPLE THAT DOWNLOAD THIS ARE IDIOTS, RICH IDIOTS, BUT IDIOTS THE SAME!

wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why there's such shock and outrage here at this stupidly priced app. There is outrageously priced software for ANY PLATFORM.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PRICE--DON'T F'N BUY IT!!!

Software prices very rarely are priced at the actual cost to develop; They are priced on demand and your target market's ability to pay. Some of the very best software is free. Some of the most craptastic, unfinished junk costs thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars (business apps).

Now, in regards to diamonds--My favorite proof that marketing is worth more than any other factor when it comes to selling something... Someone had the idea to quite literally polish rocks and sell them for thousands. What an incredibly genius and morally bankrupt idea! ;)

Example subject #1 follows. He's totally convinced himself that it's not just a rock.

Er...when one purchases a diamond, they aren't just purchasing a gemstone.

That, my friends, is the power of marketing! :D

The De Beers company controls the production and distribution of most of the diamond industry, therefore they are able to inflate the value of the diamonds. And people gladly buy these value-inflated diamonds because of their perceived sentimental value (i.e. engagement rings, necklaces).

Yes, exactly. I agree 100%.

So, personally, I'm a bit insulted by your blanket statement that "Anyone who buys a real diamond is almost as stupid as the person who buys this app." There is something to be said for the additional value that goes along with purchasing high end gemstones for special occasions..

If someone is sold a polished rock and charged $7,000, you would say that buyer is smart?

What is this additional value? I thought you just said that DeBeers inflates the value artificially based on a near market monopoly. Aren't you aware that DeBeers is also responsible for creating the perceived value via the greatest marketing campaign of all time?

What is this additional value again?

this just confirmed that the app store is a joke, how can they approve this but wont approve intelliscreen. this is cumplete bull. Apple might as well just get rid of the app store altogether theres very few apps that are even worth downloading.

So Apple won't let any kind of tethering app (which would be extremely useful and popular), UNIX app or app that uses the iPhone hardware (for example, the camera) into the store, but they will let any functionless bullsh*t in without question? I could make an app that just emits a fart sound and then crashes and charge $10000 for it?

Good to know that they have hypocritical double standards. If they are going to let superfluous crap like this in, they should just open the bloody thing to all developers.

This reminds me of the "luxury ringtones" in GTA IV--because nothing shows that you have more money in your wallet than neurons in your head like an exclusive $100 ringtone.

How is sandboxing apps a 'hypocritical double standard?' Do you even really know what that means? Because to be honest, it seems that you don't. An app like this is allowed to exist because it doesn't violate any of the SDK requirements. What's the problem???

the sdk requirements make any useful app violate them

This made my day. It's the first time I've read every single post of a long thread in a long time!

The drama, the pathos, the absolutely over the top reactions from so many people.

It's been so much fun to just see all the different reactions. I'm sure a psychologist would have a field day interpreting it all and how our reactions hint at our personalities.

Personally, as someone who actually does live 'overseas' and work with the absolute poor, hungry and marginalised, I find this hilarious. If anyone has $999.99 burning a hole in their pocket them not spending it on this app won't help the poor at all.

But even writing this is taking the app way too seriously!

Still laughing at the app and all the uproar... :)

+1! :)

Very amusing to see the reactions to this. In a way, I feel the developer has produced a piece of modern art. It certainly seems to have elicited an emotional reaction from the viewers exemplified here:
Amusement
Outrage
Jealousy

It will also probably spread fairly successfully as a piece of viral marketing. There's even the possibility that somebody might actually buy it!

Dont rich people have better things to spend 1 grand on?
It's all relative.

Many folks who make a lot of money enjoy spending it on things that make them happy. :)

This is a complete waste of money.
For you, yes.

For me, yes.

And I would venture to say most folks that hang out on MR would feel the same. But I am sure there are few who might think that it is worth it for whatever reason.

I would be upset with all the people that hate this program if they didn't provide me with such pleasure with their posts of anger and hate.
:)

I believe they can't due to their agreement with ATT.

so by your logic, the government and every company are the most ingenious marketers of all time, making all of their citizens and employees work for money, which is just ink, cloth, and paper. and let's not forget the gold standard, where back in the day, all of the cash was backed by gold, which is just some buffed up chunk of metal

you seem to be forgetting that a diamond is more than a "polished rock" it's also extremely rare in relation to some other rock like slate or shale

the point of the program would be it's rarity...what makes it idiotic however is that there is no resale value, whereas diamonds can be sold worldwide for a consistent amount

Very funny however, I can't wait for us to see the first news story in which somebody unwillingly trades that red gem for two black eyes, empty pockets, a stolen wallet, and a stolen iPhone. There is no better way to say loud and proud "rob me please!".

This is the DUMBEST app ever. Period.

Don't be jealous, because you didn't think of it first.

This application is actually ingenious. While I question it's existence in the App Store, and the market it is trying to target through the iPhone, all the devloper needs is for one person, who has access to iTunes, and has that sort of money (and some people do - as you probably fully-well know), to buy it, as a status symbol, and he's won. Less than 15 minutes work, -$100 for his developer license, he's just made $900 profit, from one person.

Get rick quick scheme, and a clever one at that.

Reminds me of the 1M pixel homepage, sell each pixel for a dollar, scenario.

Well I checked the downloads, no one's downloaded it yet.

Hope it stays that way. I can see a market for an app that's ridiculously priced. But, it would be nice if the app actually took advantage of the phone's capabilities to do something not seen/done before.

It's actually contributing to society

For everyone who complained that there are starving kids in Africa, so no one should buy this app, ask yourself what's better for those kids?

Someone buys this app.

Or everyone hoards their money instead.

If someone buys it, a little bit of tax money starts flowing, and then the US can send over some food aid. Even more if the developer takes his 70% and buys more stuff with it. Etc. Tax revenue goes up when people buy *%$&, even if it's useless *%$&.

You guys are wrong, this app does provide a valuable function.

It shows everyone what a bunch of uptight, humorless drones iPhone users are.

Idiots.

I can only imagine the comments. I see soooo many people complaining about a $9.99 app and thrashing the developer. What comments will this get?

I like the comments on this thread though! Very funny everyone :)

"I'll wait for the Blue Diamond for $1,499"

Classic

Real diamonds are status symbols because they're rare, but pictures of diamonds are a dime a dozen.

If anyone buys this thing it will be an accident, and then Apple will have some serious **** to deal with.

Hate to inform you of this but 'real diamonds' are NOT rare. They are one of the most common crystals on the planet. Nothing but pressure induced carbon. Their value is a commerical gimmick.
