OctaMED: my introduction to the world of sample playback.
Same here - on a computer anyhow, I had one of these before that :)

Ha ha - he used the same trick as me for getting samples to fit - playing LPs at 45RPM :D

Yeah, the oldest trick in the book of almost everyone who sampled pre-recorded music from vinyl. Set the speed to 45RPM and if you have an SL-1200/1210 or something similar, also push the pitch all the up to maximum to increase the speed even further. :)

As a novice, I wondered how people during the early days of East-Coast/NYC hip-hop managed to get so much mileage from samplers like the EMU SP-1200 which only had 10 seconds of sampling time split across 4 banks of 2.5 seconds. :D

I had the "toy" SK-1 sampling keyboard that I used to do ambient/noise pieces on. Later, I circuit-bent it and did even more outrageous compositions with it (think Merzbow/Masonna/Bastard Noise-type stuff). Fun little keyboard. I had bought it at a Salvation Army store for $2, and sold it on eBay for $150 (albeit with the circuit-bent modifications and a small control switch box that I built for the mods). I wish I had a picture of mine somewhere...

My graduate-level class recently had a hashing lab for which I had to submit a screenshot to prove I completed the lab. I noticed the age of the software involved and sure enough, just because I can:

Virtual PC be overheating this poor iBook G4 (last model 12") but at least it's still alive and kicking.
I didn't know wot hashing was..so had to look it up.
So if you created an OS for your iBook now, you could create a checksum for it as well?

Today (while yesterday actually) I cleaned out all personal documents from a iMac G3/350 (Summer 2000 - Indigo). I had an "interesting" time to install a "modern" browser on MacOS 9 to download a file scrubber tool to securely delete thousands of files.

This week it goes to recycling, unless I find someone in the Vancouver (BC) area who is interested in it.

Ha - so wot 'modern browser' did you use?
Were you finding scrubbers in Macintosh garden?

The one with the T-Rex skull for an icon: Classilla. And yes, Macintosh Garden is part of a select bunch of websites still working on a non-https browser and OS :)

And also the Macintosh Repository, where I found a more secure file deletion tool:

At least, I hope it's secure enough. The app mentioned somewhere that it uses a deletion protocol that is compatible with the US and British intelligence requirements (at that time ;-) )

eBay has a local listings feature, I'm sure there's a buyer in a city that big.

I'll check it out. I'd rather gift it to someone who'd like a cute retro G3 iMac. A while ago I upgraded the standard 64mb memory to 1GB, which allows MacOS 9 to work quite nicely.

Back when these were released I'd only dream of that much RAM!

That's the one I nearly bought instead of the SK-5 back in the day - of course they go go silly money now - as you capitalised on :)

I didn't want to sell it, but it was one of many things that I owned that I was forced to sell in 2005 when I went through my divorce. I was incredibly surprised at the final winning bid on it. I started the auction at .99 US and didn't expect to get much more than $40-$50 US or so, which I would have been completely happy with.

Now I want another one, this time to bend and keep 😂

Got Apple DVD-RAM (Model N0.LF-D111A). I thought it is possible to install it to Canister (G4 MDD), but with removed bezel it doesn't open correctly. Internal frame (or who that thing is called :) ) is a bit smaller than drive's tray. So I'm curios, which Macs had this as built-in or optional upgrade?

I did a goof on the KING a couple days ago and now I'm emerging gcc on the Gentoo strata. It already has gcc.

It's still going.

Help.

I don't seriously need help this is just for effect.

Can't imagine how long that would take on a G4. Wonder how much quicker it would be on a multi-core G5?

Today, I did a fresh install of Mac OS 9.1 on my Blue and White. I was intending originally to dual-boot 9.1 with 10.4.11, however with 10.4.11 installed it refused to install 9.1. I'll have to try Tiger again at a later date.

Wow - that's a great price for back in 2005 - I was in the middle of a big breakup then and dividing up 'my estate' too - regretably a lot of my tech gear got thrown in a skip out of frustration/no time to be ebaying!

Had a lot of that as well .

The final price made sense around that time, in hindsight. It was in that time period where power electronic music and noise was rising, as many non-musicians were discovering that they too could create something without having to put in the time to learn music theory, compose music, and how to play an instrument, and play dress up and look the part. A website popped up consolidating everything (https://harshnoise.com/, thankfully long gone now, but the site would appear/disappear frequently as the infighting predictably started). It contained instructions on what gear to purchase, how to manipulate the gear to find sounds and make a lot of racket without actually composing anything, which artists and groups that pioneered this stuff and who they could rip off, a list of "rules" of power electronics to follow, and more, and lots of projects started appearing that seemed pretty generic to me. Having put out a few cassette and 7" recordings (solo and collaboration) many years prior to all of this, and having actually composed all of my music rather than banging on effects pedals, extremely clipping the output, and screaming, I found this abhorrent and moved to a more ambient direction with my own compositions. I guess that makes me a "hipster" 😆. Now, it may sound like I am/was bitter, but my feelings were more along the lines of, "Why must we dilute everything?" The whole thing really got silly and stereotypical, and was more about the gear and the image rather than the music. Their "review" of my 1994 cassette recording (totally unsolicited), stating (in so many words) that I wasn't following their rules so it sucked, was the icing on the cake for me.
