One last crazy question. Is an iPad Pro even in the same league as these for my kind of usage? I have a 6th gen iPad LTE already

Im working remote and have my MBP M1 16/1TB for my personal laptop and a Dell 5411 I7 6 core 32GB ram 512 SSD. There is no comparison. The MBP is way faster, quieter, cooler. The Dell is garbage. Plasticky and the fan runs all the time. The MBP feels about 10 years ahead of the Dell. I work in IT so my career is PC/Windows focused for the last 20 years but I feel Macs are a far superior product by a landslide. I'll never use Intel/Widows for personal use.

I know Macs are expensive but you get what you pay for and far more.

Would you say the pro is worth the premium over the air? In Canada atleast, the 16gb/512 air is $50 cheaper then the pro with just 8gb of ram.

I feel the 16gb is worth it for longevity of the device as I plan to keep it a few years atleast unless Apple really blows me away with their redesign. I’ve watched hours of YouTube and still can’t for the life of me make up my mind lol

what made you go with the pro?

going for the pro only if you have heavy cpu tasks running for hours
for me personally i found that the air is better
better design ; fanless ( u don't have to do any maintenance )
and you are right about the 16gb ! , 8gb is really tight to be honest
so yes ! go for the air
also ! no touch bar , but you get the physical keys that i found better !

Never used a MacBook so jury is out for me on the touchbar. the design of the air I do like more.

for me it was the brighter screen, a bit better colour reproduction as well, better speakers and better mic’s along with a bit better battery life. Not the mention a much more powerful charger.

obviously this all sounds better on paper, it’s just a matter of how much that’s better in person

For any intensive tasks the air may throttle the cpu the mbp has a fan. I sometimes work in the bright living room and the extra 100 nits is nice. Many hate the Touch Bar. I love it and use it all the time. 16 gb is a must as most will not buy a used 8GB model in 4 years from now. The rest of the benefits are pretty small but nice.

Sounds like I’m spending the extra pennies on the pro instead of driving myself nuts later on the “what if” lol

The m1 air is my first mac. Here is why I took the plunge:
1. Fanless: Temps are cool even from the videos of people rendering vids in the hot AU sun. Silence makes it good for recording voice for my tiny YT channel
2. Battery life: I have and always been a desktop lover and am honestly debating if I should return the air for the mini. But I am most likely keeping it for the nice screen. I have been taking the air to work for the last two days. Used it a total of 8 hours over the last two days and just hit 50% battery. My last laptop that I bought for study abroad 5 years ago had roughly a 6 hour battery life. I can almost make it though a work week on my air if I plan my usage properly.
3. Ecosystem: I prefer using windows to macOS. But when I got my ipad, I fell in love with how everything synced across the two devices. Yes I could do that with windows, but not on apple exclusive apps which was what mattered most to me. It feels at times like everything is one device and I can pick up where I left off.

There are a few other reasons like video editing and side car that i like as well. But the top 3 were my main reasons.

Any “Windows” machine I buy is re-imaged with Linux before use.

ah! I now know why Windows would crash frequently. I have finally found the answer.

anyway I still won’t recommend installing windows on a Mac, both intel and arm

every few years I say to myself "man, I could really use a decent windows laptop"..then I buy one and within seconds it is back in the box and im printing up a return shipping label. Until ANY pc manufacturer can figure out how to make a laptop with a good touchpad and solid feel, they are going to have a hard time getting longtime macbook users to make the switch. I am shocked how we still cant find a decent competitor to a macbook (in hardware alone, windows OS vs mac OS is always going to be a slaughter)

x86 emulation is fully functional.
✓ It's really on an M1
✓ Virtio-net works
✓ RDP works

which is why I do not believe that Microsoft would ever consider making windows for arm widely available in the same manner as intel version. It’s scared of apple and that’s why I do not think Microsoft will put up its hand on it at the moment

Apple has single-digit PC market share worldwide. Microsoft is not remotely "scared" of Apple; they are a consumer hardware company whereas MS is primarily an Enterprise-level software and cloud solutions company. MS barely cares about the consumer market any more; as long as their apps and Office are on everyone's platforms, they're happy.

They are hugely unlikely to make Windows on ARM available for Apple Silicon due to the fact it would royally p!ss off their OEM partners (Dell, HP, Lenovo etc). Microsoft only dip their toes into their own hardware (Surface) to provide reference designs and form factors not currently served elsewhere (e.g. Surface Book, Surface Studio).

Look, I love the Mac and think the M1 seems amazing. But lets not kid ourselves about the massive dominance of Windows. While loads of us want Windows virtualised on the Mac, you never see PC users desperate for macOS in a VM on their machines. Apple is primarily a consumer company. Enterprises aren't going to start using iWork because their employees want an M1. They'll be slapping Office straight on there, and Microsoft is just fine with that. They have no desire or motivation to put Windows on Apple Silicon.

I am going to buy a new laptop and have been looking at different models (windows / mac) since the summer / autumn. Now that Apple has launched the MBA M1, the choice became easy.

Apple has the best build quality with an aluminum chassis instead of plastic that many windows laptops have. Huawei has a nice chassis.

Also that Apple finally removed the disaster butterfly keyboard that has been around since 2015. This has been the biggest reason why I have not bought a Mac after 2015.

Apple has always had good battery life and now even better battery life with the help of the M1. I think windows laptops need to be charged more often than Macs.

Also that the MBA has got an improved screen. I dont understand the idea behind a 4K screen in a laptop that requires more of the battery.
With the MBA, you avoid a fan that sounds and fills with dust after a while.

The choice between 8 / 16GB, I think it is obvious if you can afford it, you choose 16GB.
I have never seen a computer require less RAM as the years go by and software is updated.

If you are looking for a new laptop now and do not have to do extreme tasks, this is the perfect time to buy an MBA.

The next generation of Macbook we dont known when it will arrive and if there may be any detail that will be as big of a disaster as with the Butterfly keyboard.

The biggest downside with the M1 is that it will be even more expensive to repair the computer when something breaks when everything is built together on the M1.

Maybe but think that the mac with M processors will start becoming even cheaper with time....look at iphones and ipads the starting price...i bet in 2 years we will have a mac mini starting from 400$ and a macbook from under 600$
We can expect an Macbook SE in the future? :)) like iphones, apple watch

Now we're talking about Apple, do not forget it.

It was said that Apple paid expensive licenses to Intel to use their processors. Apple did not lower the price of the MBA and MBP when using their "own" M1. It did not get cheaper for us consumers, only greater profit margin for Apple.

I can not see that Apple will dump the prices of Macbooks.

I think more that Apple will do as they have done before keep a premium price on the latest and then sell older technology in a new shell such as SE version, all to increase profits.

If you want the latest and greatest, it leaves a big hole in your wallet.

I’ve definitely been sold on getting a MacBook. Honestly the last thing I want to do is see one in person since I’ve never used a MacBook before.

The one and only pc that is grabbing my attention right now is this new MSI stealth 15m. All aluminum chassis, intel i7 tiger lake chip, pci-e 4.0, RTX 2060 and weighs 3.6lbs. And it’s $1500

But it’s so new out there’s no reviews out for it at all. The specs tempt me but I have a feeling the res world usage will still be won by the new m1 chips.

I have a huawei matebook x pro and it’s a fantastic laptop. In some aspects, I feel like it’s built better than a MacBook Air or pro. Just feels more solid and thick, not thin and hollow in some areas. That said, I just got tired of Windows and update after update, lag after lag, etc. I don’t blame huawei, I blame Microsoft for something that always needs patching or updating. The Apple laptop is true in the sense that it just works. For the most part, it doesn’t let you tinker with things as much as Windows or a Linux distribution but for myself I don’t need to alter anything, I just need something that works and let’s me get done what I need. It comes standard with pages, keynote, etc as well so no need to blow additional money yearly for a license to use Word

Fair points, their partners just build some very tempting laptops lol
