Okay, twietee, my friend, when I return home (which will not be before mid October) I shall most certainly look up Night of the Hunter; for, you know, your recommendations carry weight with me.

Remind me again of the title of the Mallé film you mentioned; he is certainly one of those directors whose work impresses me quite a lot. Thoughtful, intelligent, subtle.

It is The Prisoner (No 6), not The Prisoners. But, oh, wow, so brilliant (and especially so for the sixties, when it was made). Stylish, disturbing, clever, and such terrific acting and scripts. My brother and I were absolutely rivetted when we saw it as teenagers when it was broadcast in the late 70s. And even the opening credits......(watch it on YouTube), wow, James Bond had nothing on it.

It's been a while now since I've seen a new movie. We watched Aliens the other night. It never seems to get old. :)

Which one do you prefer: Alien or Aliens?

I've seen Robocop (not -cod!) yesterday for the first time. Man, bloody movie haven't expected that kind of gore-level..no wonder I wasn't allowed to watch it back in the days. But it's a good movie - somehow like an exquisit b-movie.

I prefer Aliens, but Alien is more of a a classic "horror" movie, while Aliens was a kick-ass adventure! I had my wtf moments in both movies, like sending Dallas into a duct by himself with a flame thrower and sending a giant gun shaped rescue ship but only a handful of soldiers on board. Come on, there should have been at least 500 people and a couple of platoons. ;)

Robocop was good, but Starship Troopers was Paul Verhoeven's best movie. Honestly I don't know how Casper Van Dien ever made it into any movie, but the story, hokey-ness, special effects which were outstanding, and ensemble group of actors somehow made it work. :)

I think the most recent one I saw at the cinema was Prometheus - a good sci fi action movie, say 3.5 out of 5. Just don't expect another Alien though.

On TV most recent was either the A-Team or Child's Play - very different propositions but both good in their own way (I'm afraid I didn't find Chucky very scary though, no pun intended ;))

Hanging out for Looper now after hearing Total Recall isn't worth it..

Watched the Hunger Games last night. Quite an over hyped film I think. So much of the story is a rip off of earlier stories. Let's hope they don't make a sequel.
Then this afternoon I've just watched the first Harry Potter film again (at my daughters request). I think it's strange to see all the actors so young.

Starhip Troopers, well I don't think it's as bad as a lot of people make it, but let's say it's a very loud (B-) movie. Must have a second glance at Showgirls, but he's definitely not one of my favorite directors.

In the meantime, I could lay my hands on the finally (re-?) published I Walked With A Zombie. Tourneur is a class of his own. Nice minimal movie, strong but silent.
But I have really no idea why it's apparently soo difficult releasing classic movies in PAL format.

I'm thinking about watching the new 2011, The Thing. It's Cinemax On Demand. Can anyone recommend it?

Prometheus was a very good movie, if you did not expect to get those good "Alien" vibes. I liked it as a foundation story of sorts. There is a huge difference between Alien and Aliens too. I knew Total Recall would be a rental from the start.

I liked the first one, but the second movie will be a rental for sure. I consider it a bridge story between the first and last book.

I think EW listed it as one of those good, bad movies or bad movies we love, something like that. ;)

Just finished the wild bunch.

Known in its time for over the top violence. I wonder how it holds up now?

Watching Home Alone 2: Lost In New York at the moment. I love it :D

I watch the first one almost every christmas.

And just finished The Night of The Eagle, gave my quite the chills I must admit. Peter Wyngarde was awesome. So if you're not afraid of the dark.....black and white movies, I can recommend that one.

As I type this, I'm watching "Bad Day At Black Rock". A terrific western set in the 1950's.

Great cast (Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Ernie Borgnine, Lee Marvin, and others), good story, believable script and dialogue, fine cinematography, and well paced direction.

A little new (1955), but well worth watching...which is what I'm going to do now (for the 8th or 9th time)

Watched The Thing 2011. It was ok, but mostly a repeat of the 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing. It illustrates how good the 1982 movie was without cgi. Spoiler> At the end, they take steps to tie it in with the 1982 movie...<end spoiler.

Agree, all fair points. I went in open-minded for Prometheus, so I didn't end up disappointed the Alien vibes were missing. I think what pulled it back for me was it seemed to rush the exposition on some plot points, and was a bit (unnecessarily) melodramatic at times. All that said I'd still recommend it - enough that I'm hanging out for a sequel :)

I had hopes for Total Recall, perhaps unreasonably so :( Certainly Arnie helped to make the original. I guess I'll see if I agree with the consensus when it becomes a rental..

Would love to help but haven't seen it yet..

A Prometheus sequel could be interesting. And for those who never saw the original Alien, it the sequal would not be Alien. ;) See my reply #916. :)

The first and second ones are the best. I love them. Didn't like the third one as much and I've never seen Home Alone 4.

Didn't even know there was a third and fourth film; last time I saw the second was in the cinema some decades ago...good memories though.

Great movie, I agree, terrific acting and cinematography, an excellent script and a brooding atmosphere, and one of the first to take an intelligent, thoughtful look at the topic of the treatment of the naturalised American/Japanese in the US during the Second World War.

Agree. Ridley Scott's expressed his interest, so hopefully it's just a matter of time :)

Oops! I didn't register that was you

I'm watching "The avengers"!!

I missed that one at the cinema.. Hanging out for it to make a tv appearance now. What do you think of it?

I had the third one on VHS a long time ago. Never seen the fourth one.

Home Alone '90 - IDMb score 7.2
Home Alone II '92 - 6.2
Home Alone III '97 - 3.9
Home Alone IV '02 - 2.1
Home Alone V '12 - not yet released

Should still be a positive rating...and the Lex sequelae at it's best q.e.d. :D

There's another one coming out? I didn't know that  I still haven't seen Home Alone 4.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - lively but nostalgic anime, unfortunately I didn't like the time-leaping scenes, it's worth a look I guess
