Anora is yet another Hollywood depiction of prostitution in a glamorous way. Feminism be damned. But I guess Hollywood in itself is exploitative so they just go with it.

Other actresses playing prostitutes: Patricia Arquette, Mischa Barton, Kim Basinger, Monica Belluci, Julie Christie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rebecca De Mornay Catherine Deneuve, Lisa Edelstein, Jane Fonda, Megan Fox, Jodie Foster, Greta Garbo, Janet Gaynor, Heather Graham, Melanie Griffith, Helen Hayes, Susan Hayward, Charlise Theron

I would disagree as far as it making prostitution look glamorous.

Anora (2024)- Best Picture 2024. I saw it described as a comedy, and while there are some comedic elements, I would not describe it as a feel good comedy. Anora is a sex worker in a night club, who falls in with the son of a Russian oligarch. She agrees to be his girlfriend for a week. They fly to Vegas, he proposes to her, they marry, and once his family finds out, the rest is a mostly a dose of reality as the family, works to reverse the marriage. A slog to get through.

Not a fun, or feel good story. Mikey Madison deserves best actress, but the last half is not an enjoyable sequence of events, a movie I’m glad I did not see in the theater.

Pretty Woman felt more fantasy, yes. This story did not feel glamorous to me.
Um trust me, if a highly paid actress is playing it, people see it in a movie theatre, and its nominated for an oscar, its glamorous. Hollywood DOES glorify this past present and future.

It’s easily a human interest story, seriously. My point is that watching women work in a night club, performing lap dances and such does not look or feel glamorous, nor is it presented as glamorous. It’s looks and feels taudry, imo, but I accept your disagreement.

Hadn't seen it for a while. Couldn't find the disk so had to re-order. This 40th anniversary edition is visually stunning even in 1080p. Movie is just as entertaining and jaw dropping as it was when released 50 years ago.
But it loses something without a whole audience responding to the movie during a midnight showing.

The Brutalist was brutally long, even with the intermission.
excellent cinematography - ok acting.
anti-climactical ending. 6/10.
Anora was basically soft porn.
definitely not a family movie. 4.5/10

This is why Wes Anderson, and the Cohen Brothers stand out IMHO.

My favorite filmmakers bar none.
I completely agree. Wes Anderson is my favorite. Though his last couple of movies have not been my favorite and he has been going in a different direction then the ones I love, I still look forward to what he is going to do, or try to do.

Rushmore
Royal Tenenbaums
Life Aquatic
Darjeeling Limited
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Moonrise Kingdom
The Grand Budapest Hotel

All of those movies I can watch over and over again, and generally do around once a year.

The later ones have not resonated the same with me and probably won't go back to them.

Isle of Dogs
The French Dispatch
and Asteroid City.... this one was borderline for me in terms of being similar to the older ones I love.

Wes Anderson has a new movie coming out in June I believe, I think it I remember correctly it is an espionage movie with the usual great cast he gets. Hopefully a little more return to form for my selfish desires.

100% agreed on all of that. ;)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of the Zone (2024)
1741243785199.png

A seasoned Free Stalker tasked with guiding a band of Mercenaries deep into The Zone to investigate a paranormal radio signal. Based on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video-game series by G.S.C. Game World. Free to watch on YT.
Brought you by the same team that created SCP: OVERLORD (2020). Moving ever closer to full length productions with a runtime of 72 minutes.

While not lore correct, equally it's a very solid attempt on a small budget. As someone who's played a good deal of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I could pull the film apart, however that would be senseless as would be impossible to recreate the Zone and it's foreboding atmosphere. If anything the team has captured the essence of the men in the Zone who risk all to unravel the secrets of the Zone...

STALKER (1979)
1741245880784.png

A guide leads two men through an area known as the Zone to find a room that grants wishes...

Might as well while I'm at it. Don't expect an action packed thrill ride. STALKER is a dystopian Sci-Fi drama based on the SF novel "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky. It's very eastern, Russian above all very good if you can get into the film. Heavy on the philosophical and psychological aspects of life, mesmerisingly atmospheric and superbly shot.

I'm about 40 minutes into this one and I see what you mean. I'll finish it today but as of right now, I'm not complaining by the way - I like the film, it does appear she won an Oscar for having sex, getting high, and partying... I'm assuming there is a plot turn/twist coming up soon.

The Menu was was very good and very macabre... I guess..

Ample indeed.
Of possible interest, my wife does not like vivid sex portrayed in movies because she does not think it adds the right kind of substance to the story, and frequently is used as a crutch, there mostly to titillate male brains. No she’s not a prude. :) I agree about the latter and male brains, at least my brain. :) I have alway enjoyed it, and my position is that if as the audience, you are voyeurs into these character lives, it feels like a more realistically portrayed story, vs a PG feel, when the camera averts your eyes, or closes the door every time there is intimacy.

Yet this falls far short of porn for a good reason. For a legitimately seriously story to be portrayed imo, it has to stop at R rated sex. Once you exceed this limitation imo, the story is diminished and the sex becomes primary. If one needs sex to be primary, dial up some porn.
