Of possible interest, my wife does not like vivid sex portrayed in movies because she does not think it adds the right kind of substance to the story, and frequently is used as a crutch, there mostly to titillate male brains. No she’s not a prude. :) I agree about the latter and male brains, at least my brain. :) I have alway enjoyed it, and my position is that if as the audience, you are voyeurs into these character lives, it feels like a more realistically portrayed story, vs a PG feel, when the camera averts your eyes, or closes the door every time there is intimacy.

Yet this falls far short of porn for a good reason. For a legitimately seriously story to be portrayed imo, it has to stop at R rated sex. Once you exceed this limitation imo, the story is diminished and the sex becomes primary. If one needs sex to be primary, dial up some porn.
100 % agreed.

I'm about 40 minutes into this one and I see what you mean. I'll finish it today but as of right now, I'm not complaining by the way - I like the film, it does appear she won an Oscar for having sex, getting high, and partying... I'm assuming there is a plot turn/twist coming up soon.

The Menu was was very good and very macabre... I guess..
there's an unexpected twist alright - more sex after the 'high drama' of … …

I am in full agreement with your wife on this one.
When nothing is left to the imagination then what's the point of the plot.
They used to make fantastic movies smut-free once upon a time.
'The Nice Guys' (Rusty and RyanG) is a recent example where nudity was handled relatively discreetly and didn't distract

I watched Mid 90's (being a 90s child myself) yesterday - the first movie by Jonah Hill and it was great - they employed a 4:3 aspect ratio to echo the look of VHS skate tapes plus the soundtracking is spot on. I really liked the ending - just beautiful how it all came together.

Also, A24 is amazing - so far nothing but great movies. Next up: Waves, with one of my favorite actors, Sterling K. Brown.

No lie, this is probably one of the best SciFi films I have seen in ages! Paced a LOT differently to what I was expecting, stunning flagship effects (Looks like most of the budget went on them!), and good acting and script. Obviously predictable but it was fun and not too serious I felt.
I recommend it, and despite You Tube reviewers saying its rubbish in the week (not sure how they even saw it), it is a good film.

Aaarrgghhh!!!
Beating head softly on desk (I don't want to dent the desk, do I?)
Reading a 'review' of worst sci-fi movie endings, and started with War of the Worlds (2005). They complained about the ending, where the nasty invading aliens are killed off by Earth bugs.
Well, read the bl**dy book!!! That's how HG Wells wrote it!!!
I didn't go any further.

I've been anticipating this for a while now... :)

Mickey 17 as well.. I think that is the correct title.

Uggghhh just watched parts of the reviews for The Electric State, all moaning about the rumoured 320 million cost.. it's not 'their' money, it has real sets and endless effects in every shot. And if you watch the end credit there are literal thousands of people who made it! And some BIG name effects companies worked on it!
So the budget is totally understandable and you can see it when you watch it, it feels and looks like a quality film. But it seems reviewers would rather watch cheaply made dross instead. With effects not half as good or sharp or realistic.

SMH.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions absolutely, but I see complaining about a films budget as a pretty weak point when you can see it's totally justified. Any film with high class effects in every shot costs mega bucks.

Me too! Glad they went with a more light hearted vibe but I felt the message was still there from the book.
Mickey 17 is another film I want to see too and another film reviewers are slating as rubbish. So I fully expect to enjoy it!

The Electric State (2025 Netflix)- This is alt-reality, but I did not like the premise for that reason, just the premise of these robots and of the story involving transference of consciousness. Did not finish. It got bad reviews and I hated most of the robots. ;) Budget $320M.

Yes, that is Chris Pratt and apparantly he likes playing the same character as Guardians…

We are halfway through it, and I rather like it.
Although I think I preferred watching him trying to tell nasty, bitey dinosaurs to behave...
