Status Symbol; there is no doubt that some believe a phone is one, generally those are school kids or imbeciles. Either one isn't worth paying attention too and engaging with these fools will only drag you down to their level as has been evident in this thread.

Well, that pretty much nails that, and that's good advice. ;)

I did highlight that though.

These rumours of late have been close though and that is concerning.

I don't think I'd call it concerning. I mean if the rumors are true then there will be 2 high end phones. Xs and an Xs Plus (or whatever they call them). The cheaper option is strange but since I personally would have no interest in it I don't care what they do with it. I assume the Xs will stay @ $999 and the Xs Plus will start @ $1200 or so for base models. I do wonder how Apple would price the cheaper version. If it's @ the current 8 price of $700 then I don't see many selling based on the rumored specs and features.

Yes. I find some of the economies predicted for the LCD phone puzzling - or more.

The "key segment of the market" you mention is "kids without TV's in their bedrooms". Those are the only large group of consumers who would need such a large screen in landscape (we've established there is no benefit in portrait) for watching YouTube or playing a game.

And, my opinion, at the $1,500 this mythical X Plus would cost there is no way these bedroom kids who don't have a $199 TV with built-in Netflix/Plex/YouTube or a $199 PS/XBOXgame console can afford it either.

The Plus made sense before the X. Much larger screen in the era of forehead and chin iPhone design. But now that the X is here and it's the flagship costing big $ there aren't enough customers to support an X Plus because that ginormous screen consumer is sitting in the Android demographic, the Razer Phone and the Huawei Mate 10 are each half the price.
Well you’ve further confirmed your lack of knowledge or experience here. Kids without TVs are Plus customers? In what world is that? I think you’ll find the biggest customers are women who have the luxury of carrying bags to store these devices and young professionals who need the gap bridged between phone and tablet whilst in the field. A lot of sales teams use the Plus in my experience and I’m yet to see one in the hands of a child, although no narrative is exact. People here who own Plus devices with disagree with your rather selective opinion.

Oh I don't have an issue with Apple making a cheaper phone. But the rumor is that they are going to whack 3D Touch from it. If that's true then I don't foresee many viewing it as an upgrade. Maybe they will, who knows. The SE sells like hotcakes and it does not have 3D Touch so maybe...
I think those who buy the SE do so because it’s compact and that is the primary reason I would say. The rumoured LCD version this year will be attractive to people coming from the 6S and 7, both of which have 3DTouch and the exclusion of it will feel like a downgrade. It deflected attention back to the iPhone 8 which by then will cost less money but offer more. That doesn’t sound like a killer strategy from a company that famously puts revenue before user experience.

If they do release an X+ this will no doubt upset Boltjames quite a bit as he will no longer have Apples flagship device, he will be either forced to carry around a phablet or be shunned from his social circle.

That is very true. If we are to believe his claims of how utterly shallow and materialistic his peers are, then having an iPhone one tier below the true flagship iPhone will be hugely embarrassing.

In his world it will be the difference between his ‘lawn boy’ and being top salesman at the local BMW dealership in third party perception.

In the world I live in, women and young professionals don't watch movies or game on their smartphones. They're busy, working people with incomes that provide homes that have smart TV's for media consumption and consoles for gaming. They're not sitting on a couch straining their eyes for two hours watching a feature film on a smartphone screen. They rarely have their smartphones in landscape mode, they're portrait people, in Facebook, Instagram, Email, iMessage, etc.

In the world I live in, kids between the ages of 13 and 19 are the majority of users of oversized smartphones, mostly Android's, some Pluses. They are the ones living in landscape all day playing video games and watching YouTube on their bloated smartphones in their bedrooms which lack consoles and smart HDTV's better suited to those purposes. They're landscape people, the only orientation in which a Plus sized smartphone has any advantage.

Considering I live in a metro area of 22 million people and from the sound of it you live in a small village of a few thousand perhaps my view is a bit more representative of the 'world' you and I both live in.

I don’t know why you’re so transfixed with the notion the only reason people own a Plus is to watch movies on it?

What about larger screens for productivity on the go? The Plus was never marketed at kids and it’s price made it less attractive than a 5C back when it was introduced.

I live in a town of 35k around 20 miles from the countries capitol city if that is even relevant?

That’s why I chose an 8 Plus. I have no use for a tablet or iPad...as I have the 8 Plus as my “out and about” device and MacBook Pro at home. Coming from a 6, the 8 Plus’s large 5.5 inch display is very nice for many reasons other than just for videos. Having the wider screen and bigger keyboard is also very convenient and nice. Not to mention the amazing battery life is the icing on the cake. Pretty much the perfect phone for my needs right now. Is it a little too big at times? Yes...but it’s benefits are far more important to me. I’ll most likely be getting an X Plus in a couple years.

If you study the photos posted yesterday (above) showing good comparisons between the X and the Plus you'll see that there is zero content difference in portrait mode. Both look the same, the X actually having a slight advantage but it's pretty small. In landscape mode, slightly different story, when watching video the display shows more movie content.

So if I'm a woman or a young professional and I'm in portrait 95% of the time and price is not a barrier, the X becomes the obvious choice. It's smaller form factor and identical displayed content is just easier to handle, fits in a pants pocket finally. Again, look at the photos above. Screen content isn't an issue; it's the removal of the huge chin and forehead that makes the difference.

But if I'm a kid streaming videos and gaming all day, the X isn't a win, I'm getting compromised content.

The Plus hangs around in the assortment today because it's cheaper and competitive with the likes of Android phablets. And that's where it will stay, the X never growing to gargantuan proportions because a) Apple is not catering to the teenage bedroom-with-no-TV crowd and b) those teens can't afford a $1,500 smartphone anyway. The 8 Plus will be the end of the line, they'll keep it around for three more years, the price will drop each time to remain competitive, and the X will remain what it currently is- in portrait mode, the same displayed content as the Plus in a body that's significantly smaller.

Dude - suppliers are planning screens for bigger X models now. Why are you so invested in the idea of Apple not releasing a bigger iPhone X?

FWIW, I am a “professional” and use plus Iphones and big IPads...

I've got a 70" tv for movies and I still bought an 8+. Why? Because texting is much easier on a wider keyboard. Same reason a lot of people buy a plus. It feels better in your hand, has better battery life and a wider keyboard. I haven't spent more than 10 minutes watching video content on my phone in the 2+ months I've had it.

I don't think as many people are using a 5.5" phone in place of a tv. TVs are DIRT CHEAP these days. My 70" LG was $999, for reference. Same exact price as a 64gb X. I feel like I got much more for my money on the tv than the X I picked up for my wife.

Yeah, those same so-called experts also said the iPhone X was a bust, it was selling terribly, and was on the verge of being replaced. How'd that turn out now that the X is the best selling iPhone every week since it's release? Yeah, crickets.

I respect your use case, but we're all phone nerds here and we're talking about trends in the real world not our world.

I have no issues with typing on the X keyboard, its a matter of what you're used to I guess, but since the X body is significantly shorter than the Plus just turn the X into landscape and you'll find it's a great two handed typing option vs the Plus.

Because then he will not have the Apple Flagship device and his world would be shattered. There is no other logical conclusion to make here. Absolutely pointless debating with him.

I didn’t suggest the screen was bigger than an X so your diversionary tangent is irrelevant to what I was saying.

The Plus is attractive to many because it’s wider and a cheaper alternative to the X. It was never widely appealing to teenagers like you suggest but we’ve established you didn’t know what you were talking about anyway. Your forceful opinion may suit your own agenda but it doesn’t change facts I’m afraid.

If Apple releases a phone that is superior to the iPhone X, I will just buy it. Doesn't matter if it's next year, this year, next month, or tomorrow. I'm wearing a $17,000 wristwatch, you think I care about another $1,200 phone? I don't understand how this is even a question let alone some rationale that this plays on my mind during our conversations.

Boasting once again and thinking it impresses people. It’s very cringe worthy be highly entertaining.

Wait, so now the Plus is attractive because it's cheaper? So why are you lobbying for an X Plus that would cost north of $1,500? Pick a side already. It's getting tiresome with you changing the argument every 5 minutes.

And stop acting that your life's experience is more relevant than mine. I've got 3 teens with iPhone's, you? They've got 8 teen cousins with big-screen Android's and iPhone Pluses, you? I've never seen an executive with a Plus, ever, the thing is a phablet built for gaming. You see someone with a Plus or a gargantuan Android and the first thing that comes to mind is "can't afford a decent TV or gaming console" here in the USA.

I’m not ‘lobbying’ for the X Plus, do you actually read posts on here in full before commenting?! I have stated there are strong rumours it’s coming and this is in the news page and various threads too. It’s a common topic. I’ve got no interest in it as it’ll be hugely expensive and huge. I don’t like phablets and never have. So no i am not changing my argument every 5 mins, the problem is you not bothering yo follow what others are saying.

What is tiresome is your negative condescending attitude and constant insults based on wealth and class. Every post you write has some put down about others not being able to afford things, it’s pathetic.

The thread is entitled "reasons the iPhone 8 Plus is better than the X" and the topic of price is the #1 callout and rightfully so. The X is expensive.

I am pointing out that Apple is, for the first time, creating a new tier of iPhone that is very expensive to cater to the luxury crowd that heretofore has been ignored by Apple, no different than they did with their premium MacBook and their premium Watch. In America, we identify consumer segments using terms like upper class, middle class, and lower class.

If you take my posts personally because you identify with one of those groups and it sounds derogatory, that's on you, not me. If you don't want to participate in a conversation that is, in part, about affordability and those who can/can't afford a certain Apple product, perhaps you should find another thread to join.

Do you bother to read before you copy/paste inaccurate information? Here:

"CIRP bases its findings on its survey of 500 Apple customers who purchased an iPhone, iPad, or Mac in the U.S. between October and December 2017."

Whoa! Stop the presses! A whole 500 people in a survey in only one country! And a survey taking into account 100% of the time that the 8 was being sold and only 50% of the time that the X was being sold. How accurate! How fair! How objective! It doesn't say, but I bet they're talking unit sales too, not total revenue! 77 Million iPhone's sold in the quarter and here's a survey of 500 people! A percentage so low a calculator can't even keep up with all the decimals! Smoking gun! Here we go! You found it!

Clueless. Got that right.

Yeap pretty much sums you up and makes any opinion you have on the subject irrelevant.

I personally don't care what watch you are claiming to be wearing, it has no bearing on anything here.

Yet again you are claiming here that people are attacking you. Time for you to cry wolf again.

While I don't particularly care for some of his monetary and vain type comments he does make very valid points about the sales numbers.

Thank you.

What's interesting is how it seems to be acceptable for people to say how little money they have, or what they can't afford, or how things are too expensive yet when someone says how money isn't a worry for them, oh, that's offensive. Those who toss their poverty into the conversation should be strong enough to be unaffected when someone tosses their wealth into the conversation.
