I own both X and 8+ and switched back and forth every other week or so. Can not do it any longer as the two phones operate so differently with different interfaces. Decided to get rid of one.

The 8+ is the winner and the X will go on Craig's list this weekend. It is a great phone but the keyboard is most important to me and the 8+ wins hands down!

Just my .02 cents worth, but try swappa.com, never had any issues with them. They investigate the ESN to ensure the phone isn't black listed. I use them exclusively and find they're better than the risks involved with CL. Just my opinion.

I agree 100%, but there's a $10+$15 sale fee on swappa that some people won't pay. I've sold 3 phones on swappa recently, and none of them took more than 48h. 1 of them sold within 3 hours if I recall.

Yeah I don't think anything I've ever sold lasted more than a day or two either. As far as the sale fee, still beats dealing with idiots that don't show up, or the threat of being robbed even.

The swappa fee depends on the price of the phone now. I think it’ll be around $30. Then 3% to paypal and another $20 for shipping since you need to insure it. That junk adds up!

Yep. $750 sold my 8 plus. Swappa Fee, Paypal fee, and shipping of $17 I was left with just $700.

I would also rather pay the insertion fees from PayPal or eBay versus selling to somebody that will not show up, try to talk you down for the price when they do not show up for the iPhone. I have zero patience for those who try to take advantage of honest sellers.

Thanks but already sold to someone on CL who advertised that they wanted to buy an X. Will be meeting later today and at $850, they are getting a good deal and I do not have to endure hundreds of tire kicking emails.

No fees or hassle and I walk away with $850.

But eBay would have cost you 13% + shipping and insurance, so even more. Question: what are the risks of the seller being scammed by a buyer on Swappa? I've never used Swappa. At this point I don't think I'd sell an electronic item on eBay - too much risk of the buyer making false claims about the phone or whatever you sold.

The problem with eBay is that eBay and PayPal's policies very heavily favor the buyer, and a dishonest buyer can basically steal what you sell. I had this happen personally a few years back. I'd rather put up with the lowball offers from a CL ad and walk away with cash and know that the sale is final. FWIW, I've never had a questionable transaction with a CL ad.

I use eBay a good bit but never with Apple hardware. The seller is no longer protected like they used to be and you can get screwed quickly on eBay. When a disagreement does arise, eBay has to make a choice and sometimes it can be wrong.

EBay is in it to make money like any company.

My personal eBay rule (having been a seller there for 20 years): sell nothing with moving parts or electronics. :-\

Been at it as long as you have. Thing were different at eBay many years ago. It has turned into a monster. Many of the buyer lack language skills and I have trouble just communicating. I have had buyer win the auction and then ask if I can send it to them and allow them to make payments over the 12 months!

Not to mention that eBay is expensive. Between their fees and Paypal’s . . . Well Craig’s list cost nothing.

I've used nothing but eBay for all of my Apple devices (iPads, Apple Watch, iPhones). Been doing it for years and never had a problem. I even sell my family's old devices. I get premium prices because a) of my feedback and b) I take detailed pictures from all angles with accurate descriptions and always have original box and accessories. Just sold my 7+ and my son's SE and they sold well over the going prices.

I tried Facebook marketplace and that was a disaster. I was immediately flooded with low ball offers.

And when it comes to photos, the iPhone 8+ is also going to crop parts of the photo if you zoom to full screen, because most photos are taken in an aspect ratio that does not match the iPhone 8+ display.

Whereas no photos ever in the history of photography have been taken in the same shape as the iPhone X screen. I'll even go out on a limb and say they never will.

Just wait until one of your buyers claim the box was empty or it is not as described and eBay takes their side, not yours.

Correct me if I'm wrong but eBay and swappa both use PayPal so you are at the mercy of PayPal for either site. Pp tends to side with the buyer. Swappa doesn't get involved outside making suggestions on how they would like you to act

I saw that above and it sort of ruled out Swappa for me. PayPal's "buyer protection" is about as permissive of abuse as eBay's.

That's more or less what happened to me. It was a total fraud, but I lost.

That's true about eBay favoring the buyer and the fee's are high. I think both selling online and in person be there caveats. Everybody has there preferences, but at least selling online eliminates dealing with individuals who I have zero patience for in person. Although, I actually rarely sell online or in person, as I tend to use my devices until they are no longer usable. I don't really to make a profit off my user devices one way Or the other. Apple devices last so long as it is.

Just for the sake of completeness, I'd mention that although the fees on eBay are very high, I think in many cases the gross sales price is higher, too. It's hard to precisely compare. I have a sort of gut feeling that eBay prices net of all fees and costs probably come out about the same as the lower CL prices (which don't have any fees or shipping charges).

And that’s a good thing because if the photo was viewed full screen there would be a notch in your photo. I wasn’t saying that the iPhone X offers a better photo viewing experience. I was pointing out the absurdity of the comparison because the X was zoomed as if to say that you can’t watch the uncropped video. We view content of all shapes and sizes so why criticize a display for not matching the typical 16x9 aspect ratio of video when there are millions of us who do not buy iPhones for watching videos? Nor do we buy them specifically for viewing photos. Personally I think both look fantastic on the iPhone X, but depending on the aspect ratio some content will utilize more of the display without cropping than other content. Once again, if you want a physically larger display then buy the physically larger phone! Just remember that if you zoom a photo or video on a display that doesn’t match the aspect ratio of the content something is going to get cropped whether it is an X or an 8+. Until we have smartphone display that can morph size and shape, manufacturers have to pick a size and shape for a given model. Fortunately they make more than one model and size, so we can choose what suits us best. For me that’s the X. I don’t carry a smartphone to use as an entertainment device. I carry it mostly for communication and productivity. As a photographer I also use it to supplement my other camera gear, especially when I want to leave that gear at home. Between the X and the 8+, the X has a bit of an advantage when it comes to capturing photo and video in some situations.

I stopped using Ebay to sell stuff about 1.5 years ago when the last two items I sold both the buyers were scammers. So, now I only use Swappa to sell my phones or buy some. Never had an issue yet out of 30 plus transactions on Swappa.

Thanks. That's a very good recommendation.

Swappa is another avenue to sell online, but it doesn't necessarily mean the risk is any lower than eBay for fraud. Members throughout these threads have been victims of fraud on Swappa as well, but I still think your chances are slightly lower on that site because it it's more tech oriented.

I was totally going to get the X until I saw the notch. But now I really enjoy my 8 plus's larger screen.

At the end of the day, I think a lot of the seller's risk comes down to who buys it. Perhaps Swappa has a slightly more reliable group of buyers. Dunno, but it's an alternative. I'd probably still use CL as first choice, but sometimes things just don't attract any interest.
