Definitely keys. I don’t lose them, I just need to sometimes find them super quick when I need to head out and don’t have time to search every room of the house. It’s strictly for stuff in the house that you need to locate that I think these are for, not stuff that is been lost out in the world.

I can’t think of anything else to be honest.

Does Apple CarPlay locate your car for you? I thought it did.

I find these things rather crap. If someone steals my computer case all they have to do is pop their phone out to find the tag, remove it, and there goes my personal belongings. That's assuming the damn tag doesn't start blaring an alert to let the thief know where the tag is. These things protect others more than they protect you or your property. Overpriced, overly safe, overly Apple.

At one time, as a bit of a lark, as I left the house I would check that I had important items by crossing myself and chanting the names of those items : spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch. I may be able to attach an air tag to my wallet, perhaps even my spectacles and watch but shudder at the thought of using a 4th air tag.
I loved that movie ! You just reminded me of it.. I have to watch it again .

They’re not anti-theft devices though. They’re location devices.

I know AirPods will also show up in Find My but it's not always dependable. I've lost the AirPods, which were inside the case, in the past. They have never shown in Find My since I lost them. I think someone found and kept it. I plan on finding a way to attach an AirTag to the case.
I’m hoping someone will make an AirPod case with a place to slip in an air tag

Keys
Backpack
Suitcase

and the one I'm most excited for

Hydroflask

I have cut myself off from buying a new hydro for the longest time cause I lose them almost instantaneously. I dont know how, I have never lost my keys, wallet, or phone, but I just somehow leave them everywhere and they are NOT cheap unfortunately.

Apple could disable this feature at Airports.
As somebody who's misplaced an item or two at an airport over the years (easy to make mistakes when exhausted from travel itself) I wouldn't appreciate the trackers being off in that location. Luckily in my past situations I was able to find the misplaced items, but with a lot of luck and stress.

I know AirPods will also show up in Find My but it's not always dependable. I've lost the AirPods, which were inside the case, in the past. They have never shown in Find My since I lost them. I think someone found and kept it. I plan on finding a way to attach an AirTag to the case.
AirPods Pro

This is a good use case – I'll also be looking for a way to attach them for sure. Although ... my AirPods Pro are actually MIA right now, and FindMy is pretty useful. I also learned you can't lock them from being activated by others – so no way to know if they got found and repurposed, or are just lost in some nook of my house or car.

Hopefully in future generations of AirPods the U1 Find My is just built in.

You can also use it if you’re a hiker.
Curious to understand what's your proposed use case here? The backpack? It'll only be useful for areas where you can reasonably expect others to be around with iPhones, should something get lost on the trail. (Perhaps on popular trails, sure, somebody would probably eventually come in range. Hopefully while you were still in the general region to recover it.)

EDIT:

I did order a 4 pack, probably split 2 and 2 by my partner and I:
  • keys (2x)
  • wallets/bags (1-2x – if not too bulky for the slimmer wallet)
But maybe though 1 of 4 will be a floater ... say for the AirPods if just taking them out in a jacket (assuming a good way to attach them) or bag when traveling/out for the day – mostly post pandemic.

The Apple Remote also came to mind, as it has a way of disappearing and triggering a beep or arrow finder from phone would be a very nice option. That is a situation though where it'd be handier if Find My worked within the Family, as the solution requires the right person to be looking.

My thinking was I could think of more than 4 use cases across 2 people, so I'd experiment a bit to see where they actually prove to be more useful. Keys for sure: despite having a dedicated hook, they often end up left in jacket pockets, in the car (car itself doesn't require keys), or other corners of the home – so it'll be helpful to just to be able to beep/locate them with the proximity find feature.

Probably my bike if I ever do more city rides, just gotta figure out how to hide it...
Apple will not allow it to work this way. When separated from you it will tell everyone where it is because they are scared of “stalking”.

Nobody have mentioned Bikes. I’m planning to attach 2 tags to my bikes place them under the seat and wish the thief is dumb enough to not check. Also planning to put one on my son’s backpack as well.
How are you planning to avoid it beeping when lost (thus allowing a thief to find and throw the tag?)? I’m trying to answer this question myself and am looking for ideas!

Do we know how long before the tag starts beeping? If it’s not immediate, this could be helpful for recovering a bike that was JUST stolen... I’m hoping Apple was clever enough to at least not start this beeping mode right away...

Work bag. I carry lots of tech in it
Keys/purse
Remote
AirPods Pro
AirPods Pro, for sure. These were the first set of AirPods I ever purchased and they slipped out of my pocket at the office one evening during the first week I owned them. I was furious at myself at the thought I’d lost them somewhere so quickly. Then I was annoyed that you could only track their location when in use.... (I did retrieve them after driving back to the office that night where I was relieved to find them).

Maybe I’ll carry the AirPods with me more if I have an AirTag attached to them ?

Can we track our cars? Like putting one in the glove department and using it to easily find the car if we’re at a big sporting event, fair, etc? I know it has the tracking on our phones where it leaves our last parking location but it’s not as precise as an Airtag.

Near DC
I’m gonna track:
First 4:
keys
Main backpack
Camera bag
Wallet

secondary items:

camera accessory bag
Sound gear bag.
Work headphone case?
mini lighting kit
Monitor kit
Audio recorder kit

depending on if I can get a manageable and silent tag holder for it, possibly my main camera body(like somewhere on the cage I have for it). Hopefully SmallRig gets enough requests and makes a 1/4 -20 mountable case for the AirTags

I've had airpods since February 2017. I've never lost them but I know one day my kids will get to them and hide them somewhere.

  1. Keys
  2. TV remote
  3. Camera bag
  4. Backpack
  5. Bike
  6. Suitcase.
I think that's all for now, these are the things I (have the potential to) lose most of the time.

The tags will only beep after 3 days without connection to one of your i-devices, you should be able to disable this for 1 or 2 weeks when on holiday.

It also won't be sending out anti-stalk warning messages if it is not connected, only when a person seems to be travelling together with a tag and also has an iPhone. So a thief would get a warning message very fast, then it comes down to hiding it deep enough so it can't be removed immediately. It could very well discourage a thief from stealing it.
