We bought 4 for my wife and I. I'll put my first one on my primary car keys. Second one either on car keys for other car or in my briefcase. My wife will do car keys and purse.
Long term I could see myself doing golf bag and luggage. Possibly glasses if my eyesight starts to go on me.
Whistle sadly not available yet in the UK. I used to have a PodTracker but they went out of business. AirTag seems like the best bet for the time being. Flawed for this use, but better than nothing. Please do not use to track your dog. While you wait for an alert, the dog is dodging cars. Use GPS tracker instead that alerts quickly and tracks dog on its own. I use "www.whistle.com"
Does Apple CarPlay locate your car for you? I thought it did.
Are they flat on one side?I think double-sided tape would be the easiest option.
I find these things rather crap. If someone steals my computer case all they have to do is pop their phone out to find the tag, remove it, and there goes my personal belongings. That's assuming the damn tag doesn't start blaring an alert to let the thief know where the tag is. These things protect others more than they protect you or your property. Overpriced, overly safe, overly Apple.
But then there’s instance when the checked luggage doesn’t make the owner’s plane. I had one before when I waited at the luggage belt until all picked up and customer service told me it would arrive with the next flight......No because the owners will be in the same location as the tags.
Unfortunately that idea is out of the door when apple announced that anyone carrying an air tag that is not theirs, will be notified there is an air tag with them and they will have the option to disable tracking. For car, I was mostly thinking theft protection. For everything else, I am getting AirTags for loss protection… but I feel like having a $29 tracker in car wouldn’t be worst way to find vehicle if ever stolen.
So people can find lost hikers obviouslyAs somebody who's misplaced an item or two at an airport over the years (easy to make mistakes when exhausted from travel itself) I wouldn't appreciate the trackers being off in that location. Luckily in my past situations I was able to find the misplaced items, but with a lot of luck and stress.
This is a good use case – I'll also be looking for a way to attach them for sure. Although ... my AirPods Pro are actually MIA right now, and FindMy is pretty useful. I also learned you can't lock them from being activated by others – so no way to know if they got found and repurposed, or are just lost in some nook of my house or car.
Hopefully in future generations of AirPods the U1 Find My is just built in.
Curious to understand what's your proposed use case here? The backpack? It'll only be useful for areas where you can reasonably expect others to be around with iPhones, should something get lost on the trail. (Perhaps on popular trails, sure, somebody would probably eventually come in range. Hopefully while you were still in the general region to recover it.)
EDIT:
I did order a 4 pack, probably split 2 and 2 by my partner and I:
But maybe though 1 of 4 will be a floater ... say for the AirPods if just taking them out in a jacket (assuming a good way to attach them) or bag when traveling/out for the day – mostly post pandemic.
- keys (2x)
- wallets/bags (1-2x – if not too bulky for the slimmer wallet)
The Apple Remote also came to mind, as it has a way of disappearing and triggering a beep or arrow finder from phone would be a very nice option. That is a situation though where it'd be handier if Find My worked within the Family, as the solution requires the right person to be looking.
My thinking was I could think of more than 4 use cases across 2 people, so I'd experiment a bit to see where they actually prove to be more useful. Keys for sure: despite having a dedicated hook, they often end up left in jacket pockets, in the car (car itself doesn't require keys), or other corners of the home – so it'll be helpful to just to be able to beep/locate them with the proximity find feature.
Great info! Thank you!The tags will only beep after 3 days without connection to one of your i-devices, you should be able to disable this for 1 or 2 weeks when on holiday.
It also won't be sending out anti-stalk warning messages if it is not connected, only when a person seems to be travelling together with a tag and also has an iPhone. So a thief would get a warning message very fast, then it comes down to hiding it deep enough so it can't be removed immediately. It could very well discourage a thief from stealing it.
I've never lost any of those things myself.People must really lose their keys and wallets.....
I must be in the rare club to have never or misplaced either of those in my life
It is unclear whether the signal from the tag will penetrate from the luggage hold to the passenger cabins. But then there’s instance when the checked luggage doesn’t make the owner’s plane. It is unclear whether the signal from the tag will penetrate from the luggage hold to the passenger cabins.
On top of that, airplane mode would stop the tag being picked up by most peoples phones anyway.
If neither of those things stop the alert then it would be a mild inconvenience to the people who get alerted, yes, but nothing really more than that.
As an aside, if the signal does get from the checked luggage to the passenger cabin on a plane then this is likely to happen fairly regularly even if bags are on the same flight, as people won't necessarily be sitting close enough to their bag. In that case then over time people would just get used to it.
It's $29.I wouldn't put it on my keys as A) my bike would likely not be stolen with the keys and B) I would hate that flying around in my face as I'm riding. I'm hoping my next motorcycle will use CarKey 3.0 and I can just start it with my Apple Watch. I think I can probably find somewhere under the seat like you mentioned as I put some heat shielding in (Ducati V4S) which makes it a lot more tolerable. I doubt my bike would be stolen as it's in a secure garage in a gated property in an extremely low crime rural area but it would be nice to have that little piece of mind.
It's only $25, if it died it wouldn't be a big deal, if it meant me recovering a $25k bike then it would be worth it. If I had my Ducati at my flat in London it would be a different story, I don't think I would even get insured there thanks to the Police no longer enforcing the law.
