I'm reading the book now (Neil Gaiman's American Gods) after having watched, and enjoyed, the show. The book makes it more apparent that we're only supposed to know as much as Shadow does (which in the beginning, is practically nothing). I didn't quite get that right away from the show, as I was quite lost for a few episodes, but I'm glad I stuck with it.
