I have a few reasons for not getting one.

Obviously the biggest issue is price. $500 is just far too much money. I know it's the "best" phone out there. But I can't justify $500 for it despite what it is capable of. It's mostly what it is not capable of that makes it too expensive for me.

Then there is the plans. You basically have to spend $80 a month to get a reasonable amount of airtime. Everybody I know uses SMS as well, so I would have to pay extra to get a reasonable amount of text messages too. After taxes and such, I would be looking at over $100 a month just for a single phone.

That wouldn't be so bad if it supported tethering and was on a 3G or EVDO Revision A network. But as it is right now, it's not. So I would have to pay for the iPhone and still pay for my DSL at home.

Theres also the lack of MMS. My friends and I are always sending video and picture messages. I know I would be able to email pictures, but if they don't have access to email on their phone, only MMS, then its really hit and miss if their phone will be able to see and display the picture. Verizon phones generally can, if the picture is emailed to theirmobilenumber@vzwpix.com but not everyone is using Verizon. The iPhone currently can't record video clips either.

Storage space is a concern as well. I have an 80GB iPod right now that I also use for storage. Even 8GB isn't enough for my music, and I can't use the iPhone as an external disk.

I don't like that I can't play my iPod games either. I spent a decent amount of money on the games that I bought and I'm not about to give them up.

Then theres the real kicker. This won't affect me too much, but I know it will affect millions of people out there. Even though you're spending $500 or $600 on an non-subsidized phone, AT&T still requires a credit check for the "service" and if your credit is not pristine they might require a deposit! Excuse me? $500 on a phone with no discount for signing up for a contract and you still expect a deposit for service? I don't think so.

No iPhone without 3G

I would love to buy an iPhone, but...

AT&T / EDGE
$499 for 4GB
no copy/paste

I will gladly dump my phone when the iPhone becomes a truly complete internet appliance, but I am spoiled with EVDO on my PowerBook and a 40GB iPod for my music. iPhone needs to be all things to make sense.

I would buy an iPhone with...

EVDO / HSDPA
$499 for 32GB
copy/paste

I am guessing early 2009 these will be on the market, and the AT&T network will have been improved enough to handle them.

:apple:

what about those that don't use credit, but instead use cash?

• Wrong carrier
• i'm addicted to Handyshopper
• i could buy 4 pallets of sod for my yard with the same $$, and i need that more! :D

I could be persuaded to go the PDA/iPod combo route though, time will tell if i get that option.

Enjoy your phones guys!!

I wonder how many people that list AT&T as their reason for not getting an iPhone have actually used AT&T recently? They are my carrier and their network is fine (not amazing) for my needs. Data is slow but I'll be around WiFi most of the time anyway so that's not a deal breaker for me.

Bought it, returned it in 30 minutes

I must be the only one that did this. I was 11th in line at an AT&T store in a really small town. The first thing I did was buy a 4GB iPhone thinking that they wouldn't have received more than like 10. Then I went and played with one of the three that were on display. Suddenly, I felt satisfied and no longer thought it was rational to drop $500 on a phone and increase my monthly bill by $30. As bad as I want it, I couldn't do it......so I returned it right there.:(

its understandable. i didnt want to buy one today but they wouldnt let anyone into the store unless they were buying one. there were just a bunch of apple employees sitting there playing with them. they had like 20 set up on display. im going back tomorrow to satisfy my desire to use one after waiting for six months.

There's nothing wrong with that.
It was a good decision of yours.
I probably would have felt the same way had I bought one today.

You will know when the time is right.

I would like to change my previous answer (I'm poor), and say:

because after reading the rumors today, I think it still has some kinks to work out.

I few bummers I discovered while playing with the phone last night that prevented me from buying:

- no resend button in the mail app
- no "Return Address" setting for the mail app (this is useful if you are having your regular email forwarded to the Yahoo push account, but want mail sent from the iPhone to still appear as if it's coming from your regular email address).
- can't add attachments (such as photos) directly from the mail app
- photos are only sent from the default mail account
- all calendars from iCal show up as one unified calendar
- events added to the iPhone can only be sycned back to one iCal calendar
- no search feature in ipod

Still debating here. I defintely don't need a new phone. I've got two now (my Treo 650 from Sprint, with 8 months left on my contract) and my pre-paid Moto SLVR L7 with Cingular/AT&T.

Reasons that I haven't jumped at the iPhone:

- programs I use multiple times daily on my Treo (eWallet, ListPro, Pocket Quicken) and on my Moto SLVR (Citibank Mobile). If the iPhone had java support, I think I could justify a few things (and be able to see developers write more programs for it).

- no SSL access to most banking sites. I tried out the iPhone at the SLC Apple store last night around 11:30p and went to all of my banks (including Citibank and Wells Fargo) and all of the sites didn't recognize Safari as a valid browser. That's not an absolute deal killer since my Treo can't access those sites, either. But it would have been a nice perk.

- no dedicated To Do list app. Even the Calendar app on the iPhone didn't have any provision for to do items (like it does on on the Mac) Unless I was missing something and didn't look hard enough, I couldn't find it. And neither could the Apple employee that was helping me.

- porting my current Cingular pre paid number to the iPhone. Not sure if I can take my current SIM (which is Cingular branded) and stick it in the iPhone. I'm assuming it would work, but there's only one way to try it and I don't want to pay the 10% restocking fee unless some nice Apple employee (or AT&T employee) would let me have 2 mins with the phone to see if it worked. I'm waiting for someone to try this.....

But even given all of this, I'm still tempted by it. As I said above, I don't need it... and I certainly could spend the $600 in other ways (like upgrading my Treo to the new 755p). But being an Apple whore and loving all things Mac and iPod, I'm not saying no just yet.

That's a big feature for mobile email. And something that could be a deal killer for anyone that's used mobile email to a large degree on other devices.

I'm thinking some of these features may end up showing up on a future patch or update.

Sprint mainly....

1. Can't Break Sprint Contract
2. Afraid to try and break Sprint Contract and lose my Phone Number.
3. No GPS
4. $600 BUCKS FOR 8 GIGS WTF is that?

Seems like an awesome interface. I will wait for a price drop, GPS and a move to 3G.

I just cant justify getting one because:

1. Already have a nice cellphone and a video iPod.
2. My music and video collection is too large (about 60 GBs) for the current model to hold.
3. When I'm not at college, I live out in the middle of nowhere (worried about coverage)
4. Since I'm a college student and not a business man, the iPhone would be overkill.
5. After all ready being mugged for my iPod and macbook, I'm very hesitant to walk around with something like the iPhone.
6. I hate cellphone contracts since T-mobile screwed me over 2 years ago. I now insist on prepaid because I don't like surprises in the mail...

Overall I really really really WANT one, but I don't need one. I eagerly await later revisions and could probably actually use one once I get a decent job!

  30. AT&T SUCKS.

Good enough, or should I keep going on?

1. Can't Break Sprint Contract

That's another reason that's stopping me from switching. Granted, I have two phones, but my main phone is with Sprint and my monthly deal is killer (under $100 for 2000 shared mins, two other phones on my account and unlimited internet from all three phones).

I HATE YOU SPRINT!!! They are the only reason why an iPhone is not currently sleeping in my pocket. I keep telling myself only two months left of contract, software kinks will be gone by then. I went to AT&T today to check it out: It took SO MUCH will power to leave, I almost started crying in the car! But its cool it will be even better in september
