I have a few reasons for not getting one.
Obviously the biggest issue is price. $500 is just far too much money. I know it's the "best" phone out there. But I can't justify $500 for it despite what it is capable of. It's mostly what it is not capable of that makes it too expensive for me.
Then there is the plans. You basically have to spend $80 a month to get a reasonable amount of airtime. Everybody I know uses SMS as well, so I would have to pay extra to get a reasonable amount of text messages too. After taxes and such, I would be looking at over $100 a month just for a single phone.
That wouldn't be so bad if it supported tethering and was on a 3G or EVDO Revision A network. But as it is right now, it's not. So I would have to pay for the iPhone and still pay for my DSL at home.
Theres also the lack of MMS. My friends and I are always sending video and picture messages. I know I would be able to email pictures, but if they don't have access to email on their phone, only MMS, then its really hit and miss if their phone will be able to see and display the picture. Verizon phones generally can, if the picture is emailed to theirmobilenumber@vzwpix.com but not everyone is using Verizon. The iPhone currently can't record video clips either.
Storage space is a concern as well. I have an 80GB iPod right now that I also use for storage. Even 8GB isn't enough for my music, and I can't use the iPhone as an external disk.
I don't like that I can't play my iPod games either. I spent a decent amount of money on the games that I bought and I'm not about to give them up.
Then theres the real kicker. This won't affect me too much, but I know it will affect millions of people out there. Even though you're spending $500 or $600 on an non-subsidized phone, AT&T still requires a credit check for the "service" and if your credit is not pristine they might require a deposit! Excuse me? $500 on a phone with no discount for signing up for a contract and you still expect a deposit for service? I don't think so.
