bad bad value for money ...

lack of proper apps ... (this is the daddy of all reasons)

lack of features like mms, hardware keyoboard etc don't matter much to be honest.

I like: iPod and browser. (wish it had flash support)

now I am hopefull that 6th gen ipod will run OS X (there is a rumour that steve something as such) and will do safari as well ... so i'll wait for that OR the 2nd gen iPhone ... with iPod I am sure we'll get the Flash support as well (no security issue) and there won't be no 2 year contract BS.

Refuse to switch carriers

IF, when iphone finally arrives in the UK they try and make me switch carrier, then I'll not be getting an iphone.

I'm apple to the core, but I refuse to be forced to switch provider. The next thing you know they'll bring out a new Mac that only works with AOL.

1. I like the phone I have (a V635.) I'd appreciate web browsing and music in the same device, but not so much the iPhone is worth switching to.
2. Lack of voice recognition and feedback to allow blind dialing
3. Lack of features I expect from any phone I buy and do, actually, use, such as Bluetooth (or USB) tethering.
4. AT&T. T-Mobile is infinitely better than AT&T. And I just plain don't do locked devices. Sorry.
5. $600 and a 2 year contract. Yeah. Right. Good luck with that.

That may be five reasons, but they're (with the exception of the first which feeds into the other four) all deal breakers.

I'd be happy with a device that does the web and iPod functions of the iPhone, that I can tether to my real GSM phone using Bluetooth. I'd like that, actually. If Nokia (or the makers of SD cards) could fix the pitiful storage of the N800, that might be the device I end up getting.

Because the only reason I was excited for the release was that it meant that Apple could finally concentrate on other products such as the 6th gen iPod and the new Macbook!

1) As I learned when I bought a Macbook, I will never ever buy another apple product 1st gen.

2) No 3G! Why should I pay the same rate for data as the 3G providers when I am getting 2G speeds!

3) No do it yourself mp3 ringtones. Screw this, every phone I have had for the past 4 years could do this. I'm not going to pay for a feature that I can do myself and should be free.

4) No GPS. Are you friggin kidding me? Half the point of google maps is having gps. There absolutely needs to be a GPS navigation feature. The turn by turn thing for google is nice if you have a passenger to read it off for you, but impossible to follow if you are driving yourself. I have tried this feature on Helio phones, and they had GPS on a 3g network, and it was still difficult to follow and pay attention to the road.

5) 8GB just isn't enough space, especially if you are competing with data space for music. I want at least 20GB onboard memory so I can at least have a chance at fitting all if not most of my music on there.

I'll wait until gen 2 and see how this sucker shapes up. I have a feeling that Sony Ericsson and Nokia will be pulling out all the stops to try to take the US market back. And btw, Nokia and Sony Ericsson have been putting out great phones for years with many features that match if not exceed the iPhone, yet I blame US carriers for their lack of commitment in bringing these to their networks. For starters how about we see ATT bringing the N95 to their store shelves!! With discount it should be much cheaper than the iPhone.

I can't consider the iPhone until these things are supported at a minimum:
  • unlocked for use w/ any GSM carrier (not just AT&Tingular)
  • real IM client (not some fake web-based BS)
  • real SDK for 3rd-party apps (imagine if Apple dictated who could write Mac software and what they're allowed to write? There wouldn't be an Apple today - they need to get over the control fetish. I want my ssh & irc clients, etc.)
  • copy/paste (how could they miss this?!)
  • 3G
  • wifi or bluetooth tethering to my macbook.
  • MMS

Until then, I'll stick with my Treo 650 which already does everything the iPhone does (without as much UI chrome, admittedly) despite being 3 years old.

I agree with the analysis that the iPhone's like the original 128k Mac: a glimpse of what the future could be, but too closed and limited to be worth the money and compromises. I hope v2 addresses these issues - though the rumors around Apple's attempts to find a single partner in Europe suggest that they're going to try and push the same closed approach over there. Bummer.

No discount for 2yr contract. I bought the damn thing outright! I shouldn't be contracted!

The required 20 dollar data plan. It's got wifi. I've lived not being able to use my laptop absolutely everywhere, and I can live without my iphone internet everywhere. Besides, my city is about 80% free wifi now. I spend most of my time in wifi enabled areas.

Edit: Forgot, no IM. How lame is that?

you sir, have just stolen my words! minus the mms, I concur.

Stuck in Verizon Contract

Otherwise I would have bought one based on what I saw today... This device is simply incredible to touch and use. Very responsive, excellent quality that just works as been hyped the last 6 months. Much smaller than I thought it would be and screen is much better... Phone quality was very good on the three I placed.

Damn you Verizon , this could have been yours (ours) and now I have to debate whether to wait another 14 months or just suck it up and pay the penalty. Either way my next phone will be an iPhone.

*shudder* that would be doomsday on a stick! AOL's pretty hardcore for Windows though, right?

If Apple is going to use 3rd party providers, I hope they only use the best ones. AT&T really does have sucky service.

Well, while I could afford the monthly plan, the phone is another story. Though I am working on that (see my siggy).

I need a business phone worse than I need a portable entertainment device. If I want to listen to music, I'll get out my iPod.

QFT! :apple:

Can't use it as a modem? WTF?

If I were to pay for an expensive unlimited data plan, I want to have a choice of how I use it.
That is, I want to be able to use my phone as a wireless modem with my MBP. Unfortunately, iPhone cannot be used as a modem, and can only talk with headsets via Bluetooth.
WTF?

Ten years ago, an 8 gb hard drive would have meant you were a real power user. But now, amazingly, it's a paltry amount of storage. I'll wait until the iPhone has a bit more capacity.

There are a myriad of other little things (a weak Notes program, no ability to cut and paste, no ToDo lists for iCal, no voice dialing). But the real deal-breaker for me: as much as Apple is trumpeting how iPhone shows you the "real" web, it's not. I use lots of sites that incorporate Flash. Without that, the iPhone is pretty useless as an Internet device for me.

Other than that, it's a really elegant piece of technology.

- NOT a smartphone (no standalone apps, no Java)
- No 3.5G
- No replaceable battery
- Locked
- Contract

you would be correct, but if you would stop trolling around the forums and actaully read what people are posting, you will notice that the capabilities the iphone is lacking is found in founds MUCH cheaper or even free, why does the $600 iphone have no highly used features found in other phones?

the people that are posting arnt making shiet up, they are comparing the features found in their exsisting phones!

I don't think ATT's network is a legit reason for not buying iPhone.
The network all depends on where you are. For me Spring and VZW are out because they don't have coverage at my home or work. ATT has been nothing but great for me since I switch 2 years ago.

My reason for not have an iPhone is simple.
The wife won't let me. l set to buy on Friday, got the cash, its only $10/month more for me but she said no and dashed my plans. :(

Yeah, features like crappy interfaces, constant lockups, 3G wireless (what a joke. The iPhone on Edge performs much better than a Treo on Verizon 3g) an email client that was built in someone's garage, a web browser for cavemen, and a processor that can't handle the job. You can have em'. Apple has hit a home run here and software updates will solve most of these petty gripes.

i am sure this reflects what everyone else is saying, but my reasons (in no order):

-AT&T
-current contract with tmobile
-lack of modem tethering
-pricey upfront cost
-not only revision a product, but a revision a product of a revision a platform. ill wait for revision b.

i do think im going to upgrade to a blackberry curve from my pearl when tmobile gets them. but ill wait a year or so on an iphone.

Apple has hit a solid triple. I hope my pessimism about Apple's inclination to keep the iPhone locked up tight is unfounded. Could you copy/paste the announcement from Safari into iChat to let me know when this update comes out? Thanks.

FWIW, my treo doesn't lock up constantly and has a great push email client that lets me download and edit attachments (including Office docs). I also have a free AIM client, ssh and irc clients, Handmark Scrabble, and google maps. And, yes, a relatively crappy web browser I hardly ever use - no need with the good email and google maps clients. No 3G, but the iPhone doesn't have it either - but at least in a pinch I can bluetooth tether my macbook to my treo to get online where wifi's unavailable.

Bottom line: I like having a smartphone and I wish the iPhone was one - but without 3rd party apps, it's not one - period. Handwaving about web apps is just smoke. And locking the phone ensures that someone like me who travels and has to use local SIMs won't be able to use the iPhone - we call this "marketecture." Forget that noise.
