I’m hoping Apple has something special in store for iPad OS 18 at WWDC, but we’ve been saying that for nearly a decade so I highly doubt it. Even if the Pros are announced in April I think I will wait to see what the new OS has to offer before buying.🤞
apple always switches back and forth between big iOS improvements or big iPadOS improvements. looks like this year iOS is gonna get all the love unfortunately

It should be possible for a trillion dollar company to do two things in parallel.

Anyone look at the Surface Pro 10? That looks to be the solution I am most looking for. I had a laptop and iPad and ended up needing both. Sold both and now am strongly considering Surface Pro 10 as a solution for both tablet and laptop.
I'm toying with the idea of trying out the ARM Surfaces set to be presented in May. With Goodnotes having come
to Windows, I'm finally set from from a software perspective.

That said, it was having owned a Surface Pro, that made me get an iPad and macBook instead .... so I'm kind of torn 🤣.

We've been disappointed every single WWDC when it comes to iPadOS. One of the biggest advancements towards laptop parity was adding pointer support and even that came in . dot release of iPadOS. I've given up on iPadOS ever making a "leap".

We all know it’s possible, but these types of decisions are the reason Apple is in the position that they are in.

Most of the focus is going toward iOS 18… I’m fully aware of it this year, some iPadOS 18 only features will debut; but not sure if it will reduce the criticism. Last year, we were to receive this for iPadOS 17 based on some leak:
  • External monitor webcam support. *
  • Audio output source settings.*
  • Stream Multiple audio/vid sources at once with Stage Manager on.
  • Resizable dock (in external display settings only)
  • Sleep iPad display; external display stays on.
And so far… we only received two.

The thing that keepa me from going back to Surface was the weight as a tablet. Its not fun holding a 2 pound device (with a fan blowing hot air on you) as a tablet. That's why iPads or Galaxy tablets are much more convenient. If they ever do put MacOS, a full blown OS, on an iPad, I think iPad sales would skyrocket.

I agree with you regarding the disadvantages of the Surface Pro as a tablet, but I'm not sure that MacOS is that desirable as a tablet OS. It's build around a keyboard and mouse/trackpad. Rather than put MacOS on a tablet, I think that they simply need to enhance the functionality of iPadOS. At its core, it's still just a blown up version of a very sandboxed smartphone OS.

I agree. I wouldn’t say no to Mac OS on iPad but it would be very cumbersome (unless you could add it as a second partition, I wish).

The keyboard part, maybe, But I never bought the mouse part. If you can mouse to it, you can point your finger at it. Even easier in fact.

And the sandboxing is what keeps iPadOS from being a desktop OS. And if you open up iPadOS, you might as well just port MacOS. Why maintain two OS's that do things similarly?

I actually think if they added MacOS to the "iPad Ultra" it would literally boot MacOS and add iPadOS inside of it. So remove the Magic Keyboard and iPad mode kicks in (with MacOS still running in the background). But they won't do it anyway, so........

I thought I was the only one who thought if Apple created MacOS on the iPad they would name it the iPad Ultra.

I've said it elsewhere but I think they should copy the Steam Deck. I get it's not as simple with the differences between macOS and iPadOS but with the Steam Deck it's awesome how the default is a touch-friendly UI with just the Steam Store but when you need to do more complicated tasks you can switch to the underlying Linux desktop mode and it just works.

But sadly I think a) Apple loves the control & their cut from the App Store and b) they don't want to dissuade you from buying a Mac. Cynical, I know, but realistic.

I would think that its more of an issue of the desktop market vs the mobile market. Would/should Apple care whether their share of the desktop market is Macs, iPads or split between the two?

A mouse/trackpad pointer is actually more precise than a finger in many scenarios. That's why when Windows 8 and all subsequent versions came along, with a focus on tablets and touchscreen PCs, they introduced tiles.

Not when you've got tiny touch points right beside each other. You'll need something more precise like the Pencil.

I've used desktop Windows on the Steam Deck (for Xbox Game Pass). Trying to click on the tiny targets on the system tray is an exercise in frustration.

A Steam Deck is a tiny screen. An iPad is not.

"The iPad Pro models — codenamed J717, J718, J720 and J721 — will run the new M3 chip and work with redesigned versions of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. The update represents the first overhaul to that lineup since 2018.

The iPad Air, meanwhile, was last updated in 2022 with the M1 chip. It will get a new processor, and the 12.9-screen size means consumers can get a large iPad for less money than the more upscale Pro. The current iPad Air starts at $599, while the Pro line costs $200 more."
