I'm thinking that Mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1 could be a GM on November 10 when Apple confirms there November event
I had Beta 10 install, and now it is prompting me to upgrade to 11.0.1. Is this considered the GA release?

I just think that Mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1 replaces Mac OS Big Sur 11 Beta 10- they did something similar to one of the iOS betas. Because if Mac OS Big Sur 11 Beta 11 around it will still be in the developer portal, so they replaced it with 11.0.1
the latest Beta has a different Build #, it is newer than Beta 10

Yes it is a Beta, instead of calling it Beta 11, they changed the numbering

Not totally accurate. This is Beta 1 of 11.0.1. Which will come out at some point after 11.0 is released to the public in a few weeks.

It’s not unheard of for them to release betas for the next release before a public release has occurred. This will be due to 11.0 being internally locked as the build for 11.0 Beta 10 being the GM & subsequent public release.

We’ve had this happen a few times from Apple recently. Take iOS 14.1 & iOS 13.1 for a quick example.

There is always a GM release of software before being released to the public if then where is the GM Beta of Big Sur 11?? I think we will see version 11.0.1 when releases or maybe they want to release the Mac OS Big Sur 11 GM next tuesday- We will just have to wait and see what happens or we might see GM tomorrow as a surprise.

Here are all of the build numbers for Mac OS Big Sur
Big Sur 11.0.1 Beta 1 (20B5012d) 10/28/2020

Apple are having an event for the new Silicon Macs on November 17th, and Big Sur 11.0 is supposedly then coming out on the 18th. If that is accurate? Then the GM will be out the week after next at the latest.

Just be patient.

As said before, a beta for a new version coming before the public release of the version before is not unheard of. It’s happened a few times in recent history.

11.0.1 working good, super smooth. Ran through bunch of apps to test performance of graphics, sound, video encode/decode. Everything that needs to be on point for the general public release is on point.

They've been fairly straightforward here.. Only confusion is Apple's stupid numbering scheme that ended up getting crossed between public and dev betas.

Unfortunately, Big Sur does not play "nice" with either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. That is not good at all.
Then their devs need to get on it. Its not Apple's job to update everyone else's applications to run on their new operating system. CCC still works great here for the backups I use it for, but I leave the system ones to Time Machine, which happens to work perfectly with Big Sur.

In exchanges with Dave Nanian of Shirt Pocket Software (developer of SuperDuper! (SD)) and on another board, it is Apple that is causing the issue. I do not fully comprehend it, but here is what Dave relayed to me yesterday:

"We are forced to use asr (not ssr) to make a bootable copy, and since it doesn't work yet, we haven't been able to test with it, other than to prove it doesn't work.

I do not know when Apple will fix their tool. We've been asking all summer."

And Bombich Software (developers of Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC)) is having similar issues.

A "similar" problem came up when Apple released V10.15.5 of Catalina. Basically, it prevented both SD and CCC from booting a mac from their clone. CCC did release 2 fixes, but Apple corrected the issue in OS 10.15.6 (and still OK in OS 10.15.7).

I used to use these drive cloning apps for many years but stopped about 2 years ago. I just back up my home folders now. If I have to recover a system I don’t mind doing it afresh because Apple and Adobe make it easy to reinstall everything anew without needing to attend most of the install processes.

So you are claiming this or you know? Meaning we are already in the next beta track from the release version? Versioning would make sense that way, but why not call it GM then?

Yes GM is in the new apple computer all ready being shipped. This is the next update to Mac OS all ready. Just like new phones got iOS 14.1 shipped and we got 14.2 you know.

this never happen before going from beta to a .point release so beta 10 went GM internally and got loaded in to new computers and GM will be pub release after next apple event coming up shortly

Basically Beta 10 build will be packaged as the GM build, which Apple will have done internally last week, if more earlier. They will let Devs have it soon, as according to leakers with good track records, public release of 11.0 is to be the 18th November, the day after the Silicon event.

Which makes sense, as Apple will recap Big Sur's update, and then go on to show off the new Macs they intend to release before Christmas.....

So, that means we will get GM either next week, or more likely the week after (since in recent years, they are trending to a 1 week gap between GM and Public Release).

You're also missing out that last year we got iOS 13.1 beta before 13.0 came out. It's not unheard of that this happens, just rare, nothing to be surprised by though.

Yeah, makes sense. The interesting thing for iOS 14 was the jump straight to 14.2. But appreciate we're going off topic here!

Alot people don't think Big Sur 11 is not really ready to yet- and I don't know why they did not do a beta 11

The same happens every year. We get the last build, people claim it's not ready, then we get GM.

Ineresting that the 11.0.1 beta refers to 3 new Macs (nothing to identify if MacBook, Pro, Air, etc though).
