When was the last time you were really excited about an Apple product and what was it? Seems more and more folks are buying to replace older items, not because they are truly excited about the new product. Sort of like a lot of "ho'hum, I need a new one" thinking rather than "oh hell yeah!"
Macbook Pro M1 Max. What a beast… 🙃

I kind of want an iPad but every time I got one I returned it due to lack of use cases. For most pro cases I just actually prefer the feel of a laptop. For most entertainment/general browsing, prefer phones or watching it on a TV. I actually hate browsing the internet on iPads.
I can relate

I can relate more now that I finally have a MacBook. But iPads already paid for and still has some specific use cases, just not as many as before lol
I prefer using a laptop even for general browsing. The touchpad is much easier for me to swing my fingers across 10.9 inch screen

Apple Watch ultra. Way more excited than I thought I would be. And I’ve loved it more since getting it. Completely changed the watch and use for me.

When Ive presented a product of HIS.

MacBook 12”, 10 years after the last 12” available (PowerBook), but it took 3 years to be fixed and the engineers proved incapable.
Apple Watch Edition ceramic, a product strongly wanted by Ive (it is obvious, only a competent designer can industrialize niche processing) killed by the company's inability to manage its economic appetites.
The steel band for Apple Watch, $400 but it's another project by Ive, so much is well done.
There are several examples, but I realized that the only real reason I was fond of the company, in addition to the satisfaction for hardware and software that now literally suck, was the attention to design, certified by the presence of Ive.
Fired Ive, Apple no longer has anything to say, and you see it in every product.
In addition, they are too busy profiting at the expense of quality, so they will not recover until they have fired all the current CDA, which they will not do until the gullible continue to fill their wallets.

16" M1 Max MacBook Pro.

I was first planning on buying the 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro as I didn't want to buy a 1st gen product, but when Apple launched the 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro, they exceeded expectations and thus I bought it straight away rather than waiting for the M2.

It's imo the perfect laptop. It basically has the power of a high-end Mac Pro + RTX 3080 while having incredible battery life. It also stays silent most of the time.

I usually only get excited with my first product in a product category. Updates and refreshes to products that I already have don’t get me all that excited. Even new “pro” versions. Because they are just improvements on what is. They don’t usually provide totally new uses. I appreciate improvements, but they don’t excite me like getting totally new uses. Unless they add some crazy new functionality in the improvement.

So the last Apple product that excited me was the original HomePod.

But I think the product that excited me the most was the original iPad Pro and Pencil, because it gave me functionality that I had been waiting for the longest.

And this is why I’m looking forward to Apple’s rumored AR/VR products. I’m eager to see what kind of new functionality it’s going to bring.

I was somewhat interested in the new M2 MacBook Air, but mostly from a professional standpoint for potential customers. Candidly I’m not a laptop person, but I know they’re huge business. It’s a very nice machine, but I miss the distinctive wedge design that made the Air more unique. Presently I think the M1 MacBook Air is Apple’s best overall bang-for-the-buck computer as well as perhaps the best bang-for-the-buck computer on the market, period. The current 14 and 16 MacBook Pros are awesome machines, but they’re like exotic cars that are not for mainstream buyers.

I was excited for the 10th Gen iPad, but Apple somewhat ruined that with its beyond reasonable price gouging. Design wise it’s mostly fine except for the loss of the audio jack—dumb move.

I was also personally excited for the M1 iMac 24. I can’t say I was disappointed, but there are things I think they could have done better. Making the design a wee bit thicker to accommodate additional ports (USB-A, HDMI, SD card slot) rather than forcing buyers to get f****** dongles for a desktop computer would have been smarter—never needlessly piss off your customers. Having an option for more than 16GB RAM also would have been nice. It’s not a deal breaker, but I would have preferred the colour options to have done differently without the two-tone or rather three-tone effect—the chin and back of the computer should have been the same metallic hue and finish as the pedestal and the sides. Yeah, I could get a Mac Studio, but I prefer the AIO configuration. And even the basic Studio Display is absurdly expensive.

As is I am looking forward to the M3 iMac 24 as the eventual replacement for my upgraded 2011 21.5 iMac. I’ll go with blue or green, but I want 32GB RAM for my 3D modelling.

*Storied Excitement*

The first iPhone SE still feels like one of the most coincidentally miraculous products Apple has ever made IMHO. But at the time it was basically a flagship iPhone but smaller not bigger, and cheaper, not more expensive.

I was so excited to get one, and not have to carry the comparatively huge iPhone 6 I never loved as much as the iPhone 4 that my 6 had replaced.

I enjoy various aspects of my iPhone 13-so-called-’mini’ now, but I miss a lot of things about my SEs (I bought a second SE later for an insanely low price when they increased the storage) every day.

It still feels like an ‘accidentally’ almost perfect product - not designed to upsell, not compromised for obvious greed, not driven by trends or desires to force the customer into other buying decisions… yes it was designed to make efficient use of the old iPhone 5/5s form factor… but that was a good thing as far as I was concerned, so it didn’t matter if it was Apple being cheap and seeing that as compromise - it was actually a pro not a con for me!

———————

Needless to say the 2nd and 3rd gen SEs were not it for me. They copied the iPhone 6/7/8 form factor I ran from, except the 7/8 models lost the headphone jack and made even that worse too.

*Sighing Eternally*

While the first iPhone SE is the last Apple product I own that I was truly excited about, I will give a shout out to the Mac Studio. Not perfect, and I don’t own one yet, but it seems to be the first new Mac I have been very excited about for a long time, the ancient promise/wish for a powerful headless Mac finally coming to pass. I hope I end up with a future refresh of it.

And if they put a headphone jack in an OLED iPad Pro as they launch iPadOS Logic Pro, then I’d be all over that (yes that’s a a lot of wishful thinking in one sentence I know!). Make it high impedance like in recent macs and they could even climbdown with an excuse without having to admit the “courage” stuff was always nonsense used to flog AirPods and Beats…

I think getting my first iPad was possibly the most exciting, as it was a totally new concept for Apple at the time.
It is also the only time I have queued on launch day for a product.
It pretty much revolutionised my travel and simplified simple things like having access to films on the go.

But to be fair I was excited to get my MacStudio and Studio Display to update my old 2014 27" iMac.
Very pleased to see how powerful it was and how much faster photo editing became.

And finally, I was excited when I ordered and received my Apple Watch Ultra.
For me the design and other features were a nice step change from my old series 6 AW.

I get less excited about iPhone updates as these always seem more incremental with less wow factor.
Still always pleased to see how they work and what the new features are like though, for example I was keen to see how 5G worked when I got my 14 Pro.

I guess I am just a techy nerd who enjoys new product!😂🤣😂

iPad Pro 2018. Finally the way iPad was always meant to be (no big bezels and home button), and the magnetic-attach Pencil was a great step forward too.

The 5K display (i.e. Retina coming to desktop computing) was also huge for those of us that are picky about visuals.

Real excitement? My original 2002 Indigo Blue G3 iMac. Then my current 2011 21.5 iMac. I LOVED my old 3rd Gen Mint Green iPad Nano—that little thing felt like magic in my hand.

Not excited much for my iPhones—they’re useful devices. But my iPhone 4 was my least favourite and my current iPhone 8+ I am very satisfied with. I am also very satisfied with my current 7th Gen iPod Touch—it feels like a much better replacement for my old Nano than my old iPhone 4 I was using asa glorified iPod.

My iPads have been okay. My current iPad Pro 10.5 runs like new, but in its Targus case it feels rather weighty and a bit bulky.

I will say for me, the excitement and enjoyment continue to come from having all my Apple products work in tandem with one another. It was the case then, it continues to be the case today.

I continue to use my iPad in the classroom, mirrored to my Apple TV. The projector in my class recently blew a lamp, and a temporary one was brought in and parked in the middle of the classroom. Not the most accessible of locations for one to plug their laptop in to, but I connected my Apple TV to it and remain free to move around the classroom.

I still enjoy using my iPad both in and outside of the class. Be it doubling as a visualiser, recording screencasts, editing videos in lumafusion, annotating in Notability, presenting notes during meetings, reading email or just light gaming, it's still the ideal blend of battery life, portability and ease of use for me. Apple Pencil is great. Loved the Smart Keyboard, shame that it wasn't all that durable for me, and I just couldn't justify getting a new one every year.

My iPhone 13 pro max has excellent battery life. No complaints there.

Same with my M1 MBA. Great performance, long battery life, little heat (ideal for zooming).

My calendar is on my Apple Watch (which I refer to via the Siri watch face). Lots of little conveniences (Apple Pay, Siri, notifications, fitness tracking, 1password complication, music controls).

A bit mixed on AirPods. I find that my AirPods 3 are still the most compact and comfortable, but noise cancelling has its uses (but having rubber tips in your ears all day just isn't as comfy). I switch between the two.

Apple TVs need no introduction. I have all my streaming services on them, do some light gaming as well. They don't really break the bank.

I have a couple of AirTags lying around. Haven't really had to use them yet.

Then there's the integrations, like airdropping files amongst my various devices, iCloud tabs, iCloud photo library, universal control, being able to share app purchases between my iOS devices, having access to the best apps in the platform, that sort of thing.

I am enjoying TV+ and Apple Music as well.

I will say that Apple's product is their ecosystem.

-When apple silicon for Mac was released, the performance per watt shocked me, and also the products redesigned because of apple silicon
-12 mini, apple finally made a small phone
-13 mini, a 12 mini with better battery
-iPad trackpad, this is better than any pointer in the world (even the Mac)
-iPhone XR, best iPhone (except the huge bezels and that 6.1 in is too big)

The first iPod touch! I couldn't afford an iPhone at that time..And of course the original MacBook Air 2008 and then the iPhone 4....I still have those (sometimes when I'm really sentimental I take them out of their boxes and look at them

When they announced the M1 Macs :)

Macs have always been my favorite Apple product and before M1 it felt like they were being neglected.

Original Blue G3, 128MB graphics, (modem cost extra), although the PowerpC 7600 was pretty exciting, esp. when I finally got that extra 256MB ram.

But, well, pretty stoked with the MacBookAir mid-2012, that one lasted 10 years. Am rather happy (not so much excited) about the M1 MbA, it's such a refined laptop, despite the new one, lovin' it.

Quite recently actually, for M1 iPad Pro.
The last real hype was for iPhone 4 after coming from 3GS.
Might strart backflipping unexpectedly when they announce USB-C Thunderbolt iPhone Pro.

I can't pinpoint a particular product but it would be a much earlier iPhone. Back when local TV crews used to cover the line at the Apple store because it was exciting back then. They haven't done that in years. I'd say the iPhone 5 was probably the last time I was really excited.
Yeah, thank Angela for killing the lines.

“We don’t want people lining up in front of stores. Online orders is better. Blah blah blah”

She probably killed off the Geniuses, too, to create the dumb town square vibe… probably along the lines of: “there shouldn’t be any tech nerds within sight of anyone. We need to be a luxury brand and sell jewelry and handbags, and no one wants to see disheveled hobos next to our jewels. Hang out all day at the Apple Store under the indoor trees and vibe. And buy an Apple Watch band or two while you’re vibing. Cause fashion. And no tech nerds; only beautiful people.”

Can you tell I was happy to hear the news she got fired/force quit? Good riddance.
