I sure hope the new 12.9 screen doesn’t make my iPhone 12 Pro Max not look bad since it’s not mini led

I just ordered an 11" iPad Pro, 1TB, grey, wifi. I also ordered the pencil and Logitech keyboard.

This will be my first iPad purchase since the iPad 2 in 2012. We spent good money on that one back in the day and all it turned out to be was a deluxe time waster/content consumption device...we are not big screen watchers so it ended up becoming a toy for the cat.

So what I am looking to accomplish with this new (expensive) iPad is to use it on a 2 month long project in the North Atlantic this Fall. It will allow me to leave my 16" MacBook Pro at home and shave a lot of weight but at the same time, do the occasional processing of raw files, move images from SSD TB3 externals to dropbox, light duty invoicing, book keeping, etc. while keeping a small footprint.

If I get it and find it is still not what I need, I can always return it within the 14 day window.

Just ordered a 1TB, 16GB, 12.9 inch with magic keyboard. It will be used for pretty much every computing task, replacing my current iPad Air and the old 2012 MBP. I’ll use it to watch movies, preferably with HDR enabled. Also looking forward to editing my action cam shot movies in a future FCP version for iPad.

Space grey 11” wifi with 128GB. Still using a base 2016 9.7 pro and have 8GB remaining of 32GB. This should be a fairly decent upgrade from my existing iPad even without the mini LED I’d hope!

I ordered both the 12.9 and the 11 base models. I want to see both in action before deciding which to keep. 12.9 has always sounded too big, but maybe it actually won't be and I really want to check out the new screen on it.

This will probably open up some debate I really don't want to be a part of but... isn't OLED better than mini led in a lot of ways?
Correct, not buying into this mini led hype, I’ll be keeping my 3rd gen 12.9” pro for another year or two, when it comes to deep blacks and contrast, no one will notice a difference between the 2018/2020 iPad Pros and the mini led iPad Pro.

Only reasons why apple isn’t using oled panels this year, they either want to cut cost and go with the cheaper mini led option, or they can’t get enough oled panels.

Yes but also worse in other ways. The question is if over 2500 dimming zones will be more or less equal in most areas on a 12.9” display but still have the benefits that LCD brings. It won’t be the same as OLED ofc that has dimming capabilities down to the pixel level, but the question is if you will notice a significant difference in normal use or not.

Is anyone considering getting the 1TB for the 16GB RAM? Would this future proof for a couple of years?

I’m starting to waffle a bit as the days have gone by. I ordered a 12.9” cellular 256 go, but kind of wishing I went with the 1TB model. I will probably get an M1 Mac Mini for my desktop app needs, but I’m starting to see this iPad as my everyday driver.

As far as future proofing, I think RAM upgrade would certainly add some longevity to the device.

I got my Magic Pencil and Logitech keyboard with track pad late last week for my upcoming 11” on order.

In looking at the case it just totally confirms for me that the 11” is the way to go. I got the 1TB cellular version so it is still 4-5 weeks out.

If Apple made 16" iPad I'd probably get that version. At home, in my backpack, the size/weight doesn't matter. Too heavy for 1 or even 2 hand use anyway. It will always be supported by something. Even my super light 10.5" Galaxy Tab S5e is used that way. I could always make use of the bigger screen.

This is true and it is one reason I am giving the bigger one a chance. I may see that screen and just no longer want anything smaller.

Looking at the poll; seems 55% are going 12.9", and 24% for the 11"

Wondering if those going for the 12.9" are purchasing for the mini-LED XDR, or the screen size, or both?

Coming from an iPad Pro 10.5 myself (I'd be happy just keeping and using it, but worried about the white spot problem again, replaced once, and the touch problem is happing again and driving me crazy - trade-in while I can), and I'd love the new XDR, but just can't justify the size, and higher cost, for my use. I'd have to use the 12.9" differently. Maybe if I got into photo editing and side-by-side use with documents, but then I'd just get a new iMac with its much bigger screen, and still be able to move it fairly easily around the house. The 10.5" is my everyday lap/table/here-there packs easy basic web/email/writing/show photos/movies device, and sometimes as a very portable 'laptop' replacement with magic keyboard for work. The 12.9" is just 'big,' but maybe brilliant... that mini-LED will be interesting... Have both on order as it is, and wait for the reviews to see if the 12.9" screen upgrade is worth all the hype.

I'm upgrading from a mini 4th gen which basically crawls at this point to the base 11" with 128GB. I really don't need any "pro" features and the specs are overkill for what I will use it for, which is basically a media consumption device. But Apple kind of has me boxed into a corner because I need more than 64GB and 256GB is overkill, so that pretty much throws out the 2020 Air. I'm assuming a lot of people looking for an upgrade from a non-Pro iPad are in the same boat.

I'm replacing my 2017 Pro 12.9 512GB first. I don't actually care about Mini-LED. I'm upgrading for 1TB, FaceID and 5G. The 16GB RAM is very sweet icing on the cake.

Also recently bought an Air 4 to replace the Air 3 which is going to my mom to replace her Pro 9.7.

The Pro 10.5 512GB, I'm keeping for now. I'll probably wait for either discounts on the Pro 11 1TB 5G or no more face mask requirement before upgrading that one.

I'm really not sure. I only need 256GB as the iPad is a secondary machine to my MBP 16 2019.

I've always had an 11", but I'm really considering going to the 12.9. I use the iPad for public speaking and with the 12.9 I'd end up leaving my MBP behind more than I currently do. I think I could just travel with my new iPad and take my 1TB SSD with me. Couple that with iCloud storage and all my files would be accessible. Then add the fact that I can connect to my 34" ultra wide...this could be a BEAST. Thunderbolt really changes the game.

BUT...I'd have to purchase a new magic keyboard...so that's more added cost. I have the 11" Magic Keyboard.

So...we'll see. I have both of them coming and I'll decide then.

I’m in Japan, and they are a bit more dear price-wise here, but using an education discount to even it out. Very careful thinking and ordered a 11” silver WiFi 512GB (don’t have to compromise with keeping many movies/photos/music/documents on it as my very easy to carry ‘can do everything’ device). It will be coming the last week of May. I’ll probably go with this as it’s the size I feel comfortable with, but that XDX screen… and ordered a 12.9” silver WiFi 256GB too, price evens out compared to the 11” with less storage ($150 more still) and shipping says late June early July, so gives me time to think if the the display reviews are overwhelmingly enthusiastic. (return the 11”, or cancel the 12.9”, which ever way it works out)

Wondering how many 12.9” orders will be cancelled when/if reviews show not a big difference between screens unless viewing HDR content? On paper the XDR seems to have a huge advantage, but I keep thinking that even my iPP 10.5 looks really good.

Reviews isn't the make or break for the 12.9 iPPs.... What Apple announce for WWDC will be what 12.9 users are waiting for.

Yes, I agree. Seems like a long way till WWDC these days. It’s interesting that the 1920s Bauhaus School of design had the belief/philosophy of ‘form follows function,’ and I read somewhere this was picked up in some way by APPLE’s Steve Jobs. Guess they’ve switch this idea around, coming out with a killer iPad with the ‘wheels inflated at low pressure.’ We are all in await-mode to see if its going to be an iOS to take advantage of the design and hardware. Or maybe they just had ‘a plan’ all along I hope?

Here is my hippity hop experience going back and forth between 11" and 12.9". So on the day 1 of the pre-order, I went for 12.9" because of this very attractive mini led option. But my delivery date was slipped back to second week of June because of damn cart issue with education store, so I started finding reason to cancel 12.9" and go for 11" to get the new ipad fast, which was portability. I use the pencil a LOT, holding the ipad with one hand to take notes so I thought 12.9" will be a serious torture to my wrist. And I had a chance to get hands on to the 12.9" model today at Best Buy as I was out of town and luckily they did have it on the display - not that too much of a significant difference in terms of weight between the two! I learned a lesson - never judge the size or weight until you get your hands on... I quickly canceled the 11" order and let go of education pricing but instead settled with May 24 delivery on Best Buy. Now I'm done with this crazy oscillation, will just chill and wait til I get the new device
